Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rising prevalence of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders poses a significant public health challenge, requiring innovative research strategies. These conditions involve progressive alterations in specific neural circuits, leading to debilitating symptoms and a decline in quality of life. The exact causes remain largely unknown, with genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors all contributing to their development. Despite advances in understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms, effective treatments are limited, partly due to the lack of cellular models that accurately replicate the physiological and pathological aspects of these diseases. Furthermore, differences between the human central nervous system and laboratory animal models complicate therapeutic development.

In this scenario, stem cells and brain organoids offer a promising approach to research and therapy. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be derived from patients, providing a unique platform for in vitro modeling. Brain organoids created from iPSCs simulate the human brain’s architecture and functions, enabling deeper insights into neural development as well as disease mechanisms.

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advancements in stem cell and organoid research, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize our understanding of neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration and to advance the development of targeted, personalized treatments.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
