Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The skin, as the body’s largest organ, serves as the primary barrier protecting against environmental factors, especially pathogens. Despite its durability and high resistance, the skin is exposed to various external factors. One of the most serious threats to skin cells is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure causes photoaging and mutagenesis of keratinocytes and melanocytes. Continued exposure to UV radiation can lead to DNA damage in skin cells, especially in the epidermis, where actively dividing keratinocytes are particularly vulnerable. Further skin damage and continued exposure to various factors can lead to the development of skin cancer, which remains a serious public health problem. Skin cancer encompasses a wide range of benign and malignant tumors that are common worldwide and occur more frequently than many other types of cancer. This condition is associated with the proliferation of neoplastic cells and tissues in the skin and can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Advanced studies using cell lines, primary cells, and animal models can utilize techniques such as qRT-PCR, Western blotting, nutrigenomics, proteomics, phosphoproteomics, and lipidomics to uncover the role of new biomarkers or anti-aging and anti-cancer agents.

The aim of this Special Issue is to investigate the complex mechanisms of skin aging and carcinogenesis and to discover innovative methods to prevent and mitigate these processes. We encourage research focused on elucidating novel mechanisms responsible for skin carcinogenesis and aging, offering new insights into the biological processes involved. By fostering a deeper understanding of these processes and identifying effective interventions, this Special Issue aims to contribute to the development of more effective skin care solutions. We encourage submissions of original research articles and reviews for this Special Issue.

Research articles, review articles as well as communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
