Intracranial Aneurysms: What Do We Know So Far?

Dear Colleagues,

The increasing accessibility of advanced imaging techniques has led to a rise in the incidental detection of intracranial aneurysms (IAs), marking a significant shift in the landscape of neurovascular care. As a result, the incidence of unruptured intracranial aneurysms has risen steeply, presenting increasing challenges in the decision-making process and the evaluation of treatment strategies. Contemporary management protocols mostly emphasize endovascular treatment over surgical approaches, reflecting the growing body of evidence supporting less invasive methods. Notably, endovascular modalities such as coiling, intra-aneurysmal devices, stenting, flow diversion, and bioactive coatings have evolved substantially over the past three decades, becoming integral to modern IA management. However, long-term follow-up data after endovascular treatment remain limited, and a notable trend of aneurysm recurrence and an increasing need for re-treatment have been documented. Furthermore, this evolving landscape has led to a growing prevalence of complex aneurysms requiring greater surgical skills and experience despite reduced surgical exposure. Advanced pre- and intraoperative tools and technologies in supporting safe surgical clipping and bypass are easily available today and universally affordable, ensuring reduced complication rates. Therefore, surgical treatment remains an effective option for selected cases.

In light of the global demand for results derived from multicentric analyses on long-term follow-up, and the subsequent definition of up-to-date recommendations, we welcome authors to contribute to the present Special Issue, titled “Intracranial Aneurysms: What Do We Know So Far?”, with original papers, multicentric studies and experiences, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews exploring the dynamic field of cerebrovascular treatment, and the latest developments in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Brain Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
