Recent Advances in Hydrogels-Based Biosensors for Point-of-Care Testing—2nd Edition

We are excited to announce the launch of the second volume of our Special Issue, titled “Recent Advances in Hydrogels-Based Biosensors for Point-of-Care Testing—2nd Edition”, building upon the success of our first edition (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/biosensors/special_issues/6JR38Z79M8).

Hydrogels, formed by cross-linking covalent or non-covalent bonds, are a kind of flexible polymer material with a three-dimensional spatial network structure. At present, hydrogels, which are hydrophilic and moisturizing, soft and flexible, non-toxic and biocompatible, have been widely used in the biomedical (antibacterial hemostasis, controlled drug release, tissue regeneration, etc.) and flexible electronics (sensing, energy storage, actuation, etc.) fields. Herein, smart hydrogels possess the ability to respond to various external stimuli (temperature, light, electric field, pH, etc.), which can be applied to disease detection, environmental monitoring, field monitoring, etc. Moreover, the functional enhancement of hydrogels should be obtained with methods such as conductive functionalization, mechanical enhancement and self-repair functions. Hence, the integration of engineering technology and biological systems can be realized on the basis of the biocompatibility and mechanical flexibility of hydrogels, promoting the development of the field of flexible bioelectronics.
