Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Industry 4.0 is a manufacturing concept which promotes the digitization and digitalization of manufacturing and production systems and networks in an attempt to achieve more efficient Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC). Consequently, several new technologies, among them being Cloud Computing, 5G networks, and Artificial Intelligence, are employed for creating knowledge and to help engineers to design, develop, and implement more robust decision-making frameworks. Automation and robotics are two main research areas moving us towards the realization of Smart Factories. To that end, automation systems play a very important role in the field of manufacturing, especially under the framework of Industry 4.0, which includes the use of various Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), infrastructure, and control systems such as Smart Machinery, Cyber-Physical Machine Tools (CPMTs), Robotics, Processes in factories, and other applications. Therefore, in this Special Issue, we invite contributors to investigate the current trends in modern automation and robotic systems. Along these lines, possible contributions may focused on, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Modeling and simulation in robotics and automation;

The automation of workflows for the optimization of manufacturing processes through digital twins seems to be achievable nowadays. The enabling technologies of Industry 4.0 have matured, while the plethora of available sensors and data processing methods can be used to address functionalities related to manufacturing processes, such as process monitoring and control, quality assessment and process modelling. However, technologies succeeding Computer-Integrated Manufacturing and several promising techniques, such as metamodelling languages, have not been exploited enough. To this end, a framework is presented, utilizing an automation workflow knowledge database, a classification of technologies and a metamodelling language. This approach will be highly useful for creating digital twins for both the design and operation of manufacturing processes, while keeping humans in the loop. Two process control paradigms are used to illustrate the applicability of such an approach, under the framework of certifiable human-in-the-loop process optimization. Full article
