Innovative Biomechanical Methods for Practical Locomotive Assessments

Dear Colleagues,

The advancement of biomechanical analysis over recent decades has significantly broadened our understanding of human locomotion. In particular, gait biomechanics has been widely used to evaluate neuromuscular health indicators. By assessing gait patterns before and after interventions, effective therapeutic strategies can be identified. Longitudinal gait monitoring can track changes in neuromuscular status over time. Moreover, detailed micro-level investigations of gait features—now increasingly feasible through AI—enable early detection of subtle deterioration and risk prediction.

Despite its potential, biomechanics remains underutilised in daily life. The complexity and cost of traditional biomechanical systems have largely confined their use to laboratory settings. This Special Issue seeks original research and review articles that present innovative and practical approaches to locomotive assessment, particularly those applicable beyond conventional lab-based environments.

We welcome contributions focusing on novel measurement technologies or applications addressing locomotion-related issues such as osteoarthritis, fall risk, balance, energy expenditure, fatigue, and neuromuscular pathology. Rather than fundamental research alone, our aim is to highlight translational methods that help bring biomechanics from the lab into real-world settings. We look forward to your contributions in order to help build the bridge between research and daily application.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
