Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The explosive growth of data traffic, driven by emerging technologies such as 5G/6G networks, fog computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), has pushed optical communication systems to the forefront of next-generation infrastructure. At the same time, optical sensing is undergoing a transformation, enabling high-precision, real-time measurements in fields ranging from biomedicine to structural health monitoring. This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research and reviews on the latest developments in optical transmission technologies—including photonic integrated circuits (PICs), integrated lasers and modulators, coherent communication, optical amplifiers, and WDM systems—as well as innovations in optical sensing platforms such as fiber Bragg gratings, distributed sensing, and interferometric systems. We particularly encourage submissions that address the convergence of optical communication and sensing, system-level integration, AI-assisted optimization, and novel materials or device concepts. By bridging theory and practical deployment, this Special Issue seeks to highlight interdisciplinary breakthroughs that are shaping the future of optical networks and intelligent sensing environments.
It aims to encompass a broad spectrum of significant applications in Optical Communications Systems and Optical Sensing, including:
- Transmission Technologies and Networks
- Photonic Devices and Components
- Signal Processing and Modulation Techniques
- Fiber Optic Sensing Technologies
- Optical Sensor Design and Integration
- Sensing Applications in Key Fields
- Integrated Optical Communication-Sensing Dual-Use Systems for 6G and IoT
- Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) with Sensing Capabilities for Smart Cities
- AI-Enabled Optical Sensing and Communication Networks for Autonomous Vehicles
- Energy Harvesting in Optical Systems for Self-Powered Sensing Nodes

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
