Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the rapid growth of computational resources, coupled with advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Deep Learning (DL), and Machine Learning (ML), is significantly impacting the development of Intelligent Sensor Systems (ISSs) across various fields, such as smart industrial manufacturing, healthcare, and agriculture.

For instance, Internet of Things (IoT)-based systems leverage smart sensor networks to acquire and analyze real-time data. These systems perform tasks such as pattern recognition or decision making in a growing novel generation of sensors. The development aims to reduce data overhead and enhance detection capabilities, enabling compact and cost-effective sensor implementations. The real-time data-driven analysis will also play a crucial role in shaping the design of hardware components for these sensors, modifying the traditional sensor paradigm. Novel methodologies by including ML and DL approaches will optimize ISS performance by benefitting from big data analytics and the IoT interconnectedness for medical diagnostics or environmental monitoring applications, among others.

This Special Issue invites innovative research that explores new frontiers and addresses challenges in ISSs from manufacturing to data acquisition. Submissions may cover new AI models, ML proposals, case studies, or state-of-the-art reviews. Topics of interest include the following:

  • AI models for ISSs;
  • ML models for ISSs;
  • Clustering and classification algorithms for ISSs;
  • DL algorithms for ISSs;
  • Data mining techniques for sensor data processing;
  • Real-time intelligent algorithms for sensor systems;
  • Virtual organizations in sensor networks;
  • Advancements in artificial intelligence and IoT integration.

We look forward to receiving high-quality contributions that push the boundaries of intelligent sensor technology. Let us continue to innovate and shape the future of sensor systems together.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
