Advanced Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing
This special issue belongs to the section “Mechanical Engineering“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Advanced Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing addresses the latest scientific and technological advances that shape the evolution of modern industrial systems toward higher levels of intelligence, autonomy, and resilience. Building on the foundational principles of Industry 4.0, the Issue focuses on advanced architectures, methods, and applications that enable data-driven, adaptive, and interconnected manufacturing environments. Emphasis is placed on the integration of cyber–physical systems, industrial Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, digital twins, cloud–edge computing, and advanced analytics across the entire manufacturing lifecycle.
The Special Issue seeks high-quality theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions that examine how smart manufacturing systems support real-time decision-making, flexible production, predictive and prescriptive maintenance, and seamless vertical and horizontal integration. Particular attention is given to emerging challenges such as system interoperability, scalability, cybersecurity, human–machine collaboration, and sustainability. Contributions addressing intelligent supply chains, energy-efficient manufacturing, and the transition toward more human-centric and resilient industrial paradigms are also encouraged.
By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from engineering, computer science, and industrial management, this Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current research trends and future directions in advanced Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. The collected works are expected to support both academic researchers and practitioners in advancing the design, implementation, and governance of next-generation manufacturing systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
