Metal Additive Manufacturing: Technological Advancements and Applications

This special issue belongs to the section “Materials Science and Engineering“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM)—commonly known as metal 3D printing—is revolutionizing the way we design and produce metallic components. By building parts layer-by-layer directly from CAD models, MAM enables the creation of complex, high-performance geometries that were previously impossible—or prohibitively expensive—to make using traditional subtractive or formative manufacturing techniques. This transformative technology is driving innovation across multiple sectors, including aerospace and defense, automotive, medical and dental, energy and power generation, industrial tooling, oil and gas, and mining, among others. MAM’s ability to deliver customized, lightweight, complex, and functionally optimized parts, as well as its ability to work with difficult-to-machine alloys, is reshaping manufacturing paradigms and unlocking new possibilities for sustainable production.

The Special Issue of Applied Sciences invites researchers, engineers, and industry experts to contribute original work that showcases novel process developments, breakthrough applications, and visionary insights into the future trends of MAM usage. We welcome submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Innovations and improvements in MAM processes;
  • Advanced methods for process monitoring and quality assurance;
  • Large-scale metal deposition of functional and structural components;
  • Hybrid manufacturing approaches combining additive and subtractive/formative methods;
  • Adaptive MAM processes that optimize production procedures;
  • Technological advancements that enable a green and circular economy;
  • Life-cycle analysis and sustainability assessment of MAM technologies;
  • Industrial case studies demonstrating real-world impacts.

We encourage contributions that push the boundaries of current knowledge, whether through experimental research, computational modeling, or in-depth case studies. Both original research articles and high-quality review papers are welcome, as are short communications that present novel ideas or recent technological advancements.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
