Recent Advances in Poultry Welfare

Dear Colleagues,

The poultry industry comprises the largest number of animals of all terrestrial livestock, and is growing. Animal welfare in all stages of production needs to be considered to ensure a good quality of life. Good animal welfare includes not only the avoidance of negative experiences and suffering, but also the presence of positive experiences. For poultry, the latter may be induced by allowing birds the freedom of choice, providing on-farm enrichments, and outdoor access. Especially for poultry, welfare indicators for affective state, housing, management, and genetic strategies need further investigation. The scope of this Special Issue on Poultry Welfare includes current welfare issues for a range of poultry species, novel welfare indicators, and welfare assessment tools for poultry in all stages of life, and investigations of effective welfare improvement strategies.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
