Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for a Special Issue of Algorithms entitled “Artificial Intelligence in Sustainability Research Operations, Management, and Ecosystems”.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative driver in advancing sustainability, enabling innovative solutions to environmental, social, and economic challenges. From optimizing operations and resource management to modeling ecological systems and predicting environmental impacts, AI algorithms are reshaping how sustainability is researched and implemented. As the global agenda moves toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), integrating AI into sustainability research offers unprecedented opportunities for data-driven decision-making, enhanced efficiency, and systemic resilience across diverse sectors.

The primary goal of this Special Issue is to consolidate and disseminate cutting-edge research on the theoretical foundations, algorithmic approaches, and practical applications of AI in sustainability research, including operations, management, and ecosystem analysis. We aim to foster transdisciplinary collaboration among researchers from all areas of knowledge, encouraging the development of innovative methodologies and the sharing of case studies. By bringing together diverse perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to stimulate new discussions and advance the role of AI as a catalyst for sustainable transformation.

Potential topics for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • AI applications to achieve the SDGs
  • AI applications for sustainable and circular operations management
  • AI applications for green, sustainable and circular supply chains
  • AI applications for sustainable and circular business models
  • AI applications for sustainable and circular innovation ecosystems
  • AI applications for sustainable innovation
  • AI applications for energy transition, forecasting and efficiency
  • AI applications for climate change management
  • AI applications for sustainable cities and sustainable mobility
  • AI applications for waste reduction
  • AI applications environmental data collection
  • AI applications for water resource management and pollution control
  • Ethical and responsible AI for sustainability

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Algorithms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
