Agricultural Tractors: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities for the Green Transition
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In the context of growing attention to sustainability and food security, the agricultural tractor is a central element of mechanization in farming. Over the past decades, its technological development has evolved alongside production needs, integrating advanced engine management systems, automated systems, digitalized data, and precision farming equipment. Today, however, the main challenge is to combine productivity and efficiency with reduced environmental impact, in line with the objectives of the green transition.
Innovation in agricultural tractors is therefore moving toward the use of new energy sources (electric, hybrid, biofuels), the optimization of fuel consumption, the use of lighter, more sustainable materials, and the integration of onboard systems with intelligent monitoring and data management devices. Increasing interest is also directed toward smart or robotized tractors capable of performing some operations autonomously, potentially optimized through artificial intelligence to improve precision, efficiency, and real-time decision-making. It is also crucial to address issues such as operational safety, ergonomics, emission reduction, and adaptability to diverse production and landscape contexts.
This Special Issue aims to gather interdisciplinary studies and contributions that analyze the current trends, challenges, and opportunities offered by the evolution of agricultural tractors within the framework of the green transition, and that also hypothesize possible futures. Original research articles and reviews are welcome, spanning mechanical and electronic engineering, energy modelling, artificial intelligence training, logistics, safety, and farm management.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Agriculture is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
