Cover Story: “May I hold a panda?” is a common inquiry at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, highlighting the allure of tactile wildlife interactions in wildlife tourism. However, such experiences are often restricted due to potential risks to the animals’ well-being. This study investigates the ethical dimensions of touch in wildlife tourism by examining four panda-holding scenarios. Using Johann Gottfried Herder's philosophy of empathy and touch, combined with survey data, it explores the roles of payment and ethical appeals in influencing visitors’ willingness to hold a giant panda. The findings suggest that a balance of financial and moral incentives is essential for fostering respect, conservation awareness, and responsible human–wildlife interactions. View this paper
