Cover Story: In the present paper, hub-sided geometric contouring within the vaneless space and the vaned diffuser is utilized to increase the stable operating range of an open impeller centrifugal compressor stage. In a scale-model test rig, the performance characteristics of the novel contoured diffuser design are evaluated and compared against the baseline diffuser design. An extension of stable operating range of 8% is achieved at the highest stage Mach number. In an operating point near the stability limit, 5-hole probe measurements covering a complete diffuser blade-to-blade passage are performed to analyze the contouring’s effect on the flow at the diffuser inlet.
