Cover Story: The structural assessment of historic buildings and particularly of towers is a complex challenging activity which requires a multidisciplinary approach; it requires the collection of information from several disciplines in order to identify the building characteristics, the technology, the state of preservation and the effects of the transformations occurred in time. Despite the lack of addressed and clear merging procedures, the combination of a direct survey of geometry, materials and damage, the stratigraphic survey, the collection of historic information and the dynamic testing defines an effective minimal procedure to analyse the structural behaviour of historic towers. Dynamic monitoring complements the strategy, allowing the early warning of any structural change with a full agreement between safety requirements and the conservation principle. View this paper
