Cover Story: Newborn screening has the potential to detect several rare conditions in asymptomatic children, enabling early treatment and significantly better outcomes. Nevertheless, newborn screening programmes vary considerably across Europe. To help improve the equity of the provision of newborn screening; to ensure that all children can be offered high-quality screening regardless of race, nationality, and socio-economic status; and to spark innovations to achieve these goals, a technical meeting endorsed by the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union was held in October 2021.
