Cover Story: The mechanical aspects of cell adhesion and motility are under intensive investigation due to their crucial relation to the behavior of many natural and synthetic cellular biosystems. To move this field forward, new platforms to study cellular adhesion are required. Amoebae are excellent model microorganisms for further biomimetic development. To move this field forward, this work proposes and tests a new microfluidic platform coupled with time-lapse video microscopy to study cell adhesion and motility under highly controlled shear forces. The detachment and movement of the adhesion-competent and adhesion-deficient mutant strains were analysed. In addition to validating the tool’s functionality, it revealed the effect of cell density on adhesion properties, which we attributed to a never-before-reported hydrodynamic shielding effect. View this paper
