Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Authors have conducted an interesting research and the results presented are expected to contribute to the field of methane production. The comments appended below should help improve the work further:

1.    Given the importance of biomass in the present work.

2.    Authors should more effectively establish the novelty of the present work. Please include a table to the "Introduction" section, in which latest research works are tabulated, to highlight the novelty of the present work.

3.    Latest trends in the field of methane production should be more effectively discussed by referring to the latest reviews published over the last couple of years.

4.    How VFA was determined? Authors should apply the detailed analytical methods.

5.    In Fig. 2, the methane yield was expressed by the conversion of kg substrate, in which the Kg substrate represents VS or TS? Please clarify.

6.    The limitations of the study should also be explained.

7.    Adding in-depth discussions on the microbial mechanisms involved would be more interesting.

Reviewer 2 Report

The Manuscript ID: fermentation-2042449 Methane Production of Pistia stratiotes as a Single Substrate and as a Co-substrate with Dairy Cow Manure” requires revision before accepted for publication. The specific comments are given below.

1.     The abstract should include a background. Abstract needs to have more precision as in the current form it appears.

2.     Provide significant words which are more relevant to the work in a logical sequence as ‘keywords’.

3.     The "Introduction" section should follow the state of the art of this field and review what has been done, for supporting the research gap and the significance of this study. Please improve the state of the art overview, to clearly show the progress beyond the state of the art.

4.     In the last paragraph of the introduction, clearly indicate the research hypothesis.

5.     In the opinion of the reviewer, the Introduction should present the advantages of co-fermentation found by other authors, e.g. https://doi.org/10.3390/app12147291, https://doi.org/10.3390/en14071907, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biortech.2021.125688, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biombioe.2020.105913

6.     Statistical research is very important in experiments. For example, the hypothesis on distribution of each analyzed variable can be verified with a Shapiro-Wilk test. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) can be used to determine the significance of the difference between variables. Variance homogeneity in groups can be checked with Levene's test, whereas the significance of differences between the analyzed variables can be determined with a Tukey HSD test. If it has been tested, complete the methodology.

7.     Please indicate the manufacturer, city, country when mentioning the equipment.

8.     Add standard deviations in the results.

9.     More details should be included in the conclusion.

10.  It is also recommended to discuss and explain what should be the appropriate policies based on the findings of this study.

11.  Update your literature review with the latest publications from 2019-2022.
