Cover Story: When speaking a foreign language, it is common to pronounce some segments with a certain degree of a foreign accent, that is, a deviation from what a native listener would expect from a native speaker. However, can listeners accurately measure that degree of foreign accent consistently across different speakers? In this article, we investigate whether the “strength of an accent” can be neutralized when distinguishing between a female voice and a male voice. By conducting a thorough comparative analysis of 10 English vowels known to be problematic for Spanish speakers, we aim to determine whether the relative importance of each segment contributes equally to the subjective perception of the degree of foreign accent.
