Cover Story: Coastal ecosystems are fragile and susceptible to increasing hazards due to climate change. Ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change options were examined for the region of Niagara, Ontario, Canada, to protect not only the citizens but also the shorebirds that depend on these habitats for their survival. A scoping review of the literature was completed using the PRISMA process, and it identified four major options for the region. They were examined through the criteria for nature-based solutions to determine which ones would be most appropriate for both humans and nature. Living shorelines were considered to be the most promising option for the region followed by beach nourishment, forest cover and realignment or retreat. Further research is needed to determine the most appropriate areas for these options. View this paper
