Cover Story: The origin and intricate nature of the skin surface pH (pHSS), also known as the “acid mantle”, and its functional importance in skin homeostasis, antimicrobial defense, and inflammation, are far from being fully understood. However, it is evident that even a subtle alteration in the natural acidic pHSS impairs skin structural and functional integrity. This leads to compromised skin health that somewhat contributes to the development of various dermatoses, including eczema and psoriasis with faulty barrier function, characterized by aberrant pH values. Considering the importance of the acid mantle in skin health and disease, there is a growing need to have pH-balanced topical skincare including cleansers and moisturizers that are compatible with the acid mantle, in order to maintain, protect, and even restore the natural pHSSView this paper
