Cover Story: In common construction practice, various buildings can be found that consist of a lower, older, reinforced concrete part and a more recent upper steel part, forming a so-called “hybrid” building type. Conventional regulations provide full guidelines for the seismic design of buildings constructed with the same material throughout, “neglecting” the case of vertical hybrid buildings, while limited relative research is available. Here, an effort is made to fill this gap in the knowledge about the behavior of this hybrid building type in sequential earthquakes in the 3D space. In addition, two boundary connections of the steel part upon the r/c one are distinguished for examination in the non-linear time-history analyses, leading to useful conclusions for the safer design of the hybrid buildings. View this paper
