Cover Story: This study examines the relationship between board gender diversity and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure in developed economies. It addresses contradictory findings in prior research, which may arise from differences in governance structures, methodologies, and time frames. The results demonstrate that firms with at least three female directors show stronger ESG disclosure, while token representation (one or two women) has limited impact. The findings support the “critical mass” theory, highlighting that meaningful representation of women on boards enhances corporate commitment to sustainability and accountability. View this paper
