Cover Story: Quantitative soil assessment coupled with high-density seeding has been shown to minimize unplanned outcomes in the restoration of native plant communities. This study used a restoration of dewatered sediments at a dam removal site in Wisconsin to test hypotheses related to differences in the seeding density of native species and altered soil properties on plant community assembly. Using four seeding densities of mesic prairie species and a control, we hypothesized that higher seeding densities would result in more abundant and diverse native plant communities. We predicted that the biomass percentage and diversity of seeded species would increase with seeding density relative to non-seeded species regardless of variation in soil properties. View this paper
