Cover Story: The occurrence of Gaussian densities is an ineludible mathematical faith stemming from the Central Limit Theorem for physical quantities that are sums of independent random variables. However, there are other completely different routes to Gaussianity based on distributional mechanisms associated with simple physical interactions: local particle–particle collisions, and particle–photon radiative processes. The former are accounted for by conservative mixing transformation, in which Gaussianity emerges as a generic stationary density in the presence of quadratic (energy) constraints. The latter are described by monadic transformations, for which Gaussian distributions arise for vanishing friction, or, in the totally frictional case, in an infinite dimensional physical space. View this paper
