Cover Story: Spontaneous combustion of coal is a frequent phenomenon that leads to the generation of new mineral phases from those present in the previous coal and surrounding materials, i.e., clays. In this paper, natural clinkers (calcined clays) from a lower Cretaceous coal deposit in Teruel (northeast Spain) were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and optical and electron microscopy. The observed textural and compositional changes are the consequence of the destabilization of the original phases with the subsequent Al–Si-rich vitreous phase formation from which new mineral phases crystallized. [...] The new phases can be compared to those formed during ceramic processes as well as in metamorphic and igneous environments, and thus our study deepens the understanding of high-temperature crystallization processes.
