Cover Story: Various studies have been conducted on behavioral laterality in primates, but reviews to date have focused on data from adults because these studies comprise the bulk of prior research. For the first time, we reviewed papers with data from subjects across the first year of life to determine what topics have been studied, in what species, and whether the author(s) addressed how laterality develops. We found that nipple preference and hand preference were the most studied asymmetries, and Macaca and Pan were the most studied genera. Based on our developmental quality analysis, modifying how data are collected and analyzed will increase developmental rigor in primate studies. View this paper
