Cover Story: One of the greatest challenges of this century is to meet the world’s growing food needs whilst reducing the impact of agriculture on the environment. Some agricultural expansion is expected in order to meet the increasing, changing demand; however, this often results in the destruction of habitats that are important for biodiversity. Ensuring food security can therefore present a risk of conflict with biodiversity conservation. This paper examines areas where high biodiversity coexists with high food insecurity or a high risk of agricultural expansion, using various indicators at the global scale. Regions at high risk of conflict were found mainly in the tropics, with Madagascar and the Peruvian Andes being highlighted as areas of highest risk. These areas, among others, are identified as global priorities for further research addressing food insecurity and biodiversity loss together. View this paper
