Cover Story: In the UN-ECE ICP materials project, which began around the year 2000, the soiling of experimental materials was measured together with environmental parameters at a range of European exposure stations. The data were applied to establish the exposure–response functions (ERFs) of the soiling, which were used in this work to calculate the cleaning cost for sheltered white painted steel and modern glass surfaces (which are used as indicator materials) using a standard method. The current (2018) average cleaning costs were estimated to be ~2.5 Euro/m2 year due to elevated levels of air pollution that far exceed the background level. A hypothetical 50% reduction in the air pollution was found to produce cost savings of ~1.5 Euro/m2 year. View Paper here.
