Polymers, Volume 12, Issue 8

August 2020 - 230 articles

Cover Story: There is a huge demand for multi-polymer-layered nanofibers but mass production is elusive. This paper describes a new scalable manufacturing process that fulfills this need. Core-sheath polymeric fibers were prepared with excellent process control using a simple, economical procedure; pressurized gyration, easily adaptable in industry, where rotational speed and applied pressure can control the core and sheath dimensions at the nanoscale, starting from polymer solutions contained in a twin reservoir vessel. This discovery creates new forming capabilities that can be exploited to advance the frontiers of many advanced technologies, for example, fibers with a strong core and functional (bioactive) sheath can be made in large quantities for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and antimicrobial filtration.
