Cover Story: The photolysis and TiO2-assisted photocatalysis of four pharmaceuticals—atenolol, acetaminophen, clofibric acid, and antipyrine—were investigated under UVC irradiation. A comprehensive kinetic model was developed, considering direct photolysis, the formation and reactivity of hydroxyl and superoxide ion radicals and singlet oxygen, and the influence of a wastewater matrix. The experimental quantum yields and second-order rate constants for the reactions of the four pharmaceuticals with singlet oxygen were also determined. The model accurately described degradation in both ultrapure and secondary effluents, providing insights into the role of reactive oxygen species and supporting the design of efficient photochemical treatment strategies.
