Cover Story: Mental workload, visuospatial processes and physiological arousal are highly intertwined phenomena crucial for achieving optimal performance and improved mental health. This study investigates the relationship between these phenomena and performance, in a virtual reality (VR)-based TETRIS game with 25 participants. Multimodal data were recorded using a physiological-computing VR headset. Our findings reveal distinct patterns in EEG and cardiac activity that correlate with changes in task difficulty, in-game performance and subjective feelings of relief after a helper intervention. This study highlights the importance of multimodal physiological recording in rich environments and suggests the plausibility of workload optimization in favor of overall mental health and well-being. View this paper
