Cover Story: In recent decades, the agricultural sector has faced important challenges, such as increasing periods of drought, extreme cold events, and difficulty in responding to the food demand due to climate change and population growth. Current policies aim to evaluate and encourage sustainable land management. Sustainable management is also essential for the use of water resources for agriculture, as the world’s supply of clean and fresh water is steadily decreasing. The definition of robust indices for measuring sustainability becomes necessary to capture the economic, social, and environmental impacts of production processes. For water resources, the measurement of sustainability should be carried out at the appropriate territorial units, generally at a sub-national scale. Modern multi-criteria analysis techniques and the use of geographic information systems can help in this challenging process. View this paper
