Cover Story: Caregiving during pandemics (including the latter Omicron wave) is very difficult to realize because of social restrictions, uncertainty, anxiety, stress, and emotional dysregulation, which is particularly evident for acquired brain injury (ABI) families. In fact, ABI entails stressful situations of emotional complexity, especially for caregivers. This emotionally vulnerable condition has been further emphasized during the Omicron wave (as demonstrated by our work). In this uncertainty context, the Human Immersion Model (HIM) has allowed us to safely overcome social distancing and favours real, long-lasting (i.e., 72 hours) physical contact, with a significant increase in caregivers’ psychological well-being, including emotional awareness, and a decrease in their levels of anxiety symptoms and burden sensation.
