Cover Story: Over 11 million children lived in poverty in the U.S. as of 2021. Poverty consistently links with lower parental responsiveness, a major factor leading to insecure attachment. This study examines the mediational roles of adolescent attachments to parents and peers in the prospective, longitudinal relations between childhood poverty and adolescents’ problem behaviors. Two home visits were conducted when youth were on average 13 and 17 years old, during which each family’s income-to-needs ratio was assessed. Youth reported their attachments to parents and peers, as well as externalizing and internalizing symptoms during the second home visit. Parent attachment but not peer attachment was found to mediate the relationship between family income-to-needs ratio when children were 13 years old and adolescent internalizing problems at 17 years old. View this paper
