Abstract

Plentiful data indicate a high post-COVID risk of developing pathologies that are long-term and result from disruption of multiple cellular processes. The significance of this data becomes increasingly clear as it links the pandemic’s effects to enduring health problems which could affect millions. These conditions are usually caused by different problems with mitochondria. These problems can include less efficient energy production and increased removal of damaged cells, showing how complex cell health is. Having other health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, brain diseases, and cancer related to renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) imbalance worsened COVID-19 and its lasting effects. This highlights the importance of focused treatments for these at-risk groups. This review seeks to evaluate the information on this issue, carefully studying the features and symptoms often associated with mitochondrial disorders. What happens next in the pandemic is still to be seen, but we know there is much to learn. It is important to lessen the effects of the pandemic on people with comorbidities as much as possible.
