Affective Computing for Human–Computer Interactions

Dear Colleagues,

We are inviting submissions to this Special Issue, titled “Affective Computing for Human–Computer Interactions”.

Affective computing is key in applications where understanding and responding to human emotions and psychological states enhances user experience, such as in mental and healthcare, in which emotion-aware technologies can assist in therapy or rehabilitation. However, there are still open challenges involving how to exploit and integrate multimodal contextual information in an effective way so that systems can employ it to generate tailored responses to users. Techniques based on deep-learning models for recognizing psychological user states automatically, as well as cutting-edge generative technologies, are expected to play a significant role in addressing these challenges.

In this Special Issue we invite submissions on advancing computational methods for understanding and modeling human behaviors and psychological states (e.g., emotion recognition, trustworthiness dynamics) as well as their possible application for enhancing verbal and non-verbal language communications in multimodal scenarios. With the rise of artificial intelligence and large language models in applications such as chatbots, virtual assistants, and interactive platforms, comprehending the interplay of emotional cues, trust-building mechanisms, and non-verbal communication has become crucial. This Special Issue aims to foster innovation in areas like emotion recognition, sign language interpretation, trust modeling, and conversational AI, emphasizing technologies that bridge gaps in human–machine communication. Both theoretical and experimental studies are welcome, as well as comprehensive review and survey papers.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
