Veterinary medicine fundamentally revolves around working with people to positively influence how they care for their animals. Veterinarians have traditionally used directive advice-giving when providing clients with recommendations, which can inadvertently push clients further away from change despite good intentions by evoking resistance and leaving the underlying motivational and contextual barriers to change unaddressed. Motivational interviewing (MI), a collaborative communication approach originally developed for addiction counselling, has been widely adapted across many fields because of its proven effectiveness in strengthening intrinsic motivation to change. MI was first applied in veterinary medicine approximately a decade ago with a small but growing evidence base. This review introduces the theoretical foundations of MI, how it can be applied within different types of clinical consultations, as well as the challenges of developing and sustaining competency in practice and ethical implications specific to the veterinarian–client–animal relationship, including the proxy motivation problem where clients bear the costs of behaviour change for benefits experienced primarily by their animal. This review then critically appraises the veterinary MI literature, which has largely focused on communication training outcomes with limited research on the downstream effects on client behaviour or animal welfare, highlighting important research gaps to promote an increased uptake of MI in clinical practice. Background: Emerging evidence indicates that epilepsy extends beyond the brain, involving systemic metabolic, immune, and microbiome perturbations that shape neuronal excitability and treatment response. Canine idiopathic epilepsy (CE) offers a naturally occurring model with strong electrophysiological, pharmacological, and clinical homology to human epilepsies. Methods: This scoping review was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A systematic literature search was performed in Web of Science and MEDLINE (PubMed) to identify original studies reporting metabolic, immunometabolic, or neurochemical alterations in CE compared with healthy controls. Eligible studies included peer-reviewed original research involving client-owned dogs diagnosed with CE according to international consensus criteria (IVETF guidelines). Studies focusing exclusively on genetics or neuroimaging without metabolic outcomes were excluded. Titles, abstracts, and full texts were screened for eligibility, and data were extracted from included studies using a standardized approach. Identified metabolic domains were synthesized narratively and grouped into functional systems, including amino acid and lipid metabolism, micronutrients, neurotransmission, oxidative stress, inflammation and immunology, endocannabinoid signalling, microRNAs, and gut–brain axis-related pathways. In a second step, the identified metabolic domains were evaluated for translational relevance through a targeted, non-systematic narrative synthesis of the human epilepsy literature. This approach aimed to assess cross-species parallels and to provide a conceptual framework to guide future research, rather than to perform a comprehensive systematic review of metabolic alterations in human epilepsy. Results: Across CE studies, consistent alterations were observed in multiple interconnected functional systems, including metabolic, immune, and gut–brain axis pathways, in agreement with findings reported for human epilepsy. These data support a model of epileptogenesis involving systemic dysfunction beyond the central nervous system. Translationally, these findings suggest opportunities for biomarker development, patient stratification, and mechanism-based interventions, including dietary and metabolic approaches (e.g., medium-chain triglyceride supplementation), microbiome modulation, and immunometabolic targeting. The current evidence is limited by small and heterogeneous cohorts, potential confounding effects of antiseizure medications, variability in dietary and fasting conditions, breed-related effects, and a predominance of associative over causal relationships. Conclusions: This review positions CE as a reference framework for future research into epilepsy metabolism, integrating current evidence and its translational relevance to human disease. The findings support a shift toward a systems-level view of epileptogenesis, involving interconnected metabolic, immune, and gut–brain axis pathways beyond the brain. CE represents a valuable translational model to identify shared mechanisms, inform biomarker discovery, and guide the development of mechanism-based therapeutic strategies across veterinary and human epilepsy. Professionalism is central to veterinary practice, shaping not only the quality of care provided to animals but also the wellbeing of practitioners, the satisfaction of clients, and the sustainability of the profession. Prior research has catalogued various attributes of professionalism that are important for career success, but few studies have integrated these multiple perspectives into a cohesive framework. This study synthesizes insights from three key veterinary stakeholder groups—students, clinical practitioners, and clients—using a multi-methods approach including surveys, focus groups, critical incident interviews, and client complaint analyses. Across the datasets, ranking of Likert-scale responses and thematic analysis revealed four recurring themes that were identified as essential for career success: ‘Effective communication’; ‘Accountability, integrity, trustworthiness, and honesty’; ‘Personal wellbeing’; and ‘Quality of service’. These themes were organized into a unifying theoretical model of veterinary professionalism, conceptualized as a ‘navigational compass’, comprising three domains of care: patient-centered care, relationship-centered care, and self-care. By conceptualizing professionalism in terms of a compass, the model illustrates how veterinarians can draw on key professionalism attributes, coupled with consideration of the three domains of veterinary care, to navigate the challenges of practice and sustain long-term career success. The compass provides a reflective framework to guide veterinarians and educators, to support the integration of professionalism into curricula and to guide careers toward excellence in care and lasting personal fulfilment. Background: Dental and respiratory diseases are common in companion rabbits. While upper respiratory tract disorders have been described in association with dental pathology, the possible correlation between dental disease and pulmonary lesions has not yet been investigated. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on client-owned rabbits presented for suspected dental disease that underwent head and thoracic computed tomography (2012–2025) at a veterinary teaching hospital. Seventy-three rabbits met the inclusion criteria (mean age 4.96 years). Results: Dental involvement was present in 81% (59/73) of the rabbits and pulmonary lesions in 29% (21/73). Among rabbits with dental disease, frequent osseous findings included osteomyelitis (49%), inflammatory resorption (42%), and maxillary deformities (33%). Pulmonary abnormalities occurred in 32% of rabbits with dental disease compared to 14% of those without. In Poisson models with log link adjusted for age and sex, dental disease was not significantly associated with pulmonary lesions (prevalence ratio [PR] 2.14; 95% CI 0.55–8.38; p = 0.275). Sensitivity analyses using 1:1 matching with cluster-robust variance (PR 3.24; 95% CI 0.65–16.1; p = 0.152) and overlap-weighted doubly robust estimation (PR 2.08; 95% CI 0.42–10.4; p = 0.371) yielded directionally positive but imprecise results. Conclusions: Computed tomography proved valuable for the evaluation of thoracic comorbidities in rabbits with dental disease. Although dental and pulmonary abnormalities were often observed together, a statistically significant association was not established. Larger, prospective studies are warranted to further clarify this relationship. Full article

Background: Effective communication is a fundamental competency in veterinary medicine that shapes the quality of veterinarian–client relationships, shared decision-making, and animal welfare. However, consistent and systematic integration of communication training across veterinary curricula remains uneven worldwide. Methods: This scoping review mapped and analyzed educational programs aimed at developing communication competencies in veterinary education and professional practices. A systematic search was conducted according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines, identifying 37 eligible studies published between 2005 and 2024. Results: Most publications were in English and originated from North America, particularly Canada (n = 15) and the United States (n = 8). Regarding target populations, 15 studies (40.5%) focused on veterinary students, 12 (32.4%) on practicing veterinarians, 8 (21.6%) on animal owners or clients, and 2 on veterinary educators. 18 studies (48.7%) described structured programs that used active learning strategies such as role-play, clinical simulations, peer-assisted learning, and formative feedback. The competencies frequently emphasized include empathy, active listening, nonverbal communication, conflict resolution, and rapport building. Notable best practices included the Calgary–Cambridge model, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), and reflective video analysis. Conclusions: The available evidence indicates a growing emphasis on clinical communication within veterinary education, primarily implemented through experiential and practice-based approaches. However, substantial gaps persist in the representation of Latin American contexts and in the systematic, longitudinal integration of communication skills across veterinary curricula. Addressing these gaps may contribute to more coherent, equitable, and context-sensitive communication training in veterinary education. Full article

The assessment of animal welfare and quality of life (QoL) is a critical aspect of veterinary practice. While the development of standardized tools to measure QoL has been widely discussed, there is limited research analyzing how these tools are applied in clinical practice. This study investigates the current state of QoL assessment in small animal medicine in Germany through a mixed-methods approach. A survey was conducted with veterinarians and veterinary assistants, assessing the awareness and use of QoL assessment tools in practice. In addition, interviews with veterinarians were conducted to examine their perceptions and experiences regarding the use of QoL measurement tools and the assessment of QoL itself. The findings indicate that the use of standardized QoL assessments is rare and often primarily done while doing studies. Factors hindering the widespread use of these instruments include lack of time, lack of awareness, the perceived lack of need and resistance to fitting the individuality and subjectivity of QoL into a schema. As beneficial features of such tools, veterinarians mentioned the possibility of documenting and tracking QoL and the enhancement of the relationship between professionals and clients. Further research should therefore not only focus on development but also on dissemination of such tools. Full article

This narrative review examines the complexities of medical uncertainty in veterinary practice, highlighting its significant implications for clinical reasoning and decision-making. Veterinary professionals face inherent uncertainties due to factors such as biological variability, incomplete knowledge, and the pressures of rapidly evolving practices. The distinction between clinical ambiguity and medical uncertainty is crucial, as it informs the coping strategies employed by veterinarians. While uncertainty is often viewed negatively, it can stimulate curiosity and enhance problem-solving capabilities. This review categorizes uncertainty into aleatoric and epistemic types, offering insights into their origins and impacts on veterinary professionals and client interactions. The dynamic nature of uncertainty influences both immediate clinical encounters and long-term professional development, with varying effects based on individual tolerance levels and situational stakes. Despite the growing body of literature on uncertainty, veterinary education often neglects to address this critical aspect, leading to a gap in metacognitive competencies among practitioners. We have included a case example that offers explicit guidelines on the application of the Five Microskills model of clinical teaching. This model is proposed to assist veterinary professionals in effectively managing uncertainty. To enhance the quality of veterinary care, there is an urgent need to integrate uncertainty management into veterinary curricula and ongoing professional development. By fostering an environment that acknowledges and addresses uncertainty, veterinary professionals can improve their clinical reasoning, strengthen client relationships, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes. This review advocates for the adoption of evidence-based practices and collaborative approaches to navigate the complexities of uncertainty, ensuring high standards of care in veterinary medicine. Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an increasingly implemented approach in human services, but little research documents implementation within veterinary services. This study explored emotional experiences of veterinary clients and the perceived emotions/behaviors of their pets, studied experiences of TIC, and ascertained the extent to which experiences of TIC predicted client outcomes. Clients (N = 274) were surveyed about their experiences of veterinary care. Clients documented positive and negative emotional experiences, with negative emotions associated with more serious presenting issues. TIC was experienced during veterinary visits. Principal component analyses found that TIC fell into the following five factors: (1) transparent and client-centered communication; (2) client supports and strengths; (3) emotional safety and empowerment; (4) physical safety and comfort; (5) informed consent. Hierarchical regressions revealed that, after controlling for reason for the visit, client-reported emotions and pet emotions/behaviors, 53.9% and 56.3% of the variance in client satisfaction and client disappointment was accounted for by TIC practices, respectively. The results show that although the outcomes for pets receiving veterinary care might not always be positive, which can lead to negative emotional experiences for clients, these can be ameliorated and lead to positive client outcomes through utilizing TIC. In dogs with intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE), the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale—Short Form (GCMPS) and the Sharp and Wheeler Grading Scale (SWGS) are routinely used in the evaluation of pain (GCMPS) and neurological function (SWGS). Additionally, quantitative sensory tests (QSTs) are increasingly being incorporated into veterinary clinical practice for pain characterisation. The aim was to investigate a possible relationship between the GCMPS, the SWGS, and mechanical thresholds (MTs) in 31 client-owned dogs with thoracolumbar IVDEs. Dogs were always assessed in the same order, starting with pain rating using the GCMPS, followed by classifying neurological severity using the SWGS, before determining MTs using a handheld pressure algometer. Dogs were evaluated over a five-day testing period (before surgery and on days one, two, three, and ten after surgery). The GCMPS and the SWGS data remained consistent across all days of testing. No statistically significant correlation or difference was observed between the scores. MTs showed a significant negative correlation with the GCMPS (r = −0.311; p < 0.001) and a positive one with the SWGS (r = 0.282; p = 0.002). The GCMPS and MTs showed a slight divergence in their progression. MTs might be more sensitive than GCMPS in reflecting clinical improvement and should be considered for clinical practice. Veterinarians face ethical challenges during their careers, but despite evidence of work-related stress and burnout in veterinarians, moral distress has been poorly investigated. Using an online survey, professional experience, moral distress, and burnout were investigated in 704 Italian veterinarians caring for companion animals, farm animals, or both. The reliability of the moral distress questionnaire was optimal, and Factor analysis identified four factors for moral distress: I. Conflict with owner/farmer; II. Relationships with colleagues/superiors; III. Legal context/unsupportive Professional Institutions; IV. Unshared requests for euthanasia. Veterinarians reported rather low levels of moral distress but high levels of work-related stress/anxiety and a decline in empathy over time, mainly toward owners/farmers. More than 50% of veterinarians reported medium/high levels of burnout, and client-related burnout was significantly higher than animal-related burnout. Levels of work-related stress, moral distress, and burnout were higher in women, and experience exerted a protective effect. Moral distress was positively correlated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and, to a lesser extent, lower professional fulfillment. The relatively low level of moral distress that emerged in the study needs further investigation, especially considering the high levels of work-related stress and anxiety reported by veterinarians. Women’s greater sensitivity to moral distress and burnout should not be overlooked given the progressive feminization of the veterinary profession worldwide. Full article

The Calgary–Cambridge Guide is a widely recognised framework for teaching communication skills to healthcare professionals that has become a cornerstone of communication training programs in medicine and other healthcare fields. In the context of veterinary medicine, its integration into communication training programs has become an asset improving communication, education, interaction, and quality of service, enhancing the veterinary–client–patient relationship (VCPR). In veterinary medicine, however, a more challenging consultation dynamic involves the veterinarian, the owner, and the animal. The addition of a veterinary assistant that acts as an interpreter or translator is common in Hong Kong where the native language (Cantonese) coexists with English when consultations are led by non-native language speakers. This addition converts this commonly dyadic model into a triadic communication model. The addition of an assistant interpreter influences the way consultations are conducted, how information is conveyed, and how interpersonal cues and empathy are delivered. In this report we depict challenges applying the Calgary–Cambridge Guide in multicultural and multilingual veterinary medical centres in Hong Kong and highlight the role of veterinary supporting staff in these scenarios, specifically veterinary assistant interpreters. Exotic animals traded and kept as pets can transmit a variety of diseases to humans and other animals, and vice versa. Therefore, it is essential for pet owners, particularly vulnerable groups, to be informed about associated risks. Veterinarians play a crucial role in informing pet owners about health risks associated with zoonotic pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and should, therefore, have good communication skills to effectively transfer information to pet owners. Thus, exotic pet owners in Germany were surveyed on animal husbandry, veterinary consultation and risk communication. To evaluate the perception of communication, a self-developed questionnaire was used to derive a communication score. The perception of veterinarian communication received a high average score showing a high level of satisfaction. The duration of the veterinarian–client relationship was associated with better communication perception, and the frequency of communication on zoonoses and AMR was associated with the presence of a permanent veterinarian. However, the results indicated that the frequency of disseminated information on zoonoses and/or AMR from veterinarians was lower than desired by the pet owners. Therefore, more educational material on zoonoses and AMR should be made available, and the awareness concerning risk communication should be increased by further education and training at universities. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) remains the single most common cardiomyopathy in cats, with a staggering prevalence as high as 15%. To date, little to no direct therapeutical intervention for HCM exists for veterinary patients. A previous study aimed to evaluate the effects of delayed-release (DR) rapamycin dosing in a client-owned population of subclinical, non-obstructive, HCM-affected cats and reported that the drug was well tolerated and resulted in beneficial LV remodeling. However, the precise effects of rapamycin in the hypertrophied myocardium remain unknown. Using a feline research colony with naturally occurring hereditary HCM (n = 9), we embarked on the first-ever pilot study to examine the tissue-, urine-, and plasma-level proteomic and tissue-level transcriptomic effects of an intermittent low dose (0.15 mg/kg) and high dose (0.30 mg/kg) of DR oral rapamycin once weekly. Rapamycin remained safe and well tolerated in cats receiving both doses for eight weeks. Following repeated weekly dosing, transcriptomic differences between the low- and high-dose groups support dose-responsive suppressive effects on myocardial hypertrophy and stimulatory effects on autophagy. Differences in the myocardial proteome between treated and control cats suggest potential anti-coagulant/-thrombotic, cellular remodeling, and metabolic effects of the drug. The results of this study closely recapitulate what is observed in the human literature, and the use of rapamycin in the clinical setting as the first therapeutic agent with disease-modifying effects on HCM remains promising. The results of this study establish the need for future validation efforts that investigate the fine-scale relationship between rapamycin treatment and the most compelling gene expression and protein abundance differences reported here. Few veterinary professionals use formal quality of life (QOL) assessment tools despite their recommendation from veterinary governing bodies to enable holistic welfare assessments and target welfare improvement strategies. Perceived barriers include resistance from owners, and this study aimed to elucidate understanding of dog owner engagement with conversations and tools relating to QOL. An online survey that investigated owner experience, comfort, and opinions about vet-client discussions on topics connected to canine health and well-being, including QOL, was completed by 410 owners. Almost all owners (95.8%) were reportedly comfortable discussing QOL, yet only 32% reported their vets had addressed it. A high proportion of owners (70.8%) expressed interest in assessment tools, but only 4.4% had experienced one, none of which were QOL tools per se. Semi-structured interviews of a sub-set of four owners provided a more in-depth examination of their experience of a health and well-being assessment tool. Thematic analysis generated three themes: ‘Use of assessment tools supports client-vet relationship and empowers owners’, ‘Owners want to talk about holistic dog care’, and ‘Owner feelings on the wider application of assessment tools’. Overall, our findings suggest that owners want to broaden the veterinary consultation conversation to discuss QOL and are interested in using tools, and therefore veterinary perceptions of owner-related barriers to tool application appear unfounded. Indeed, tool uptake appears to improve the vet-client relationship and boost owner confidence. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emerging challenge to global public health. The use of antibiotics in the veterinary field is one of the contributing factors to AMR mostly due to poor knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of dispensers. Veterinary drug dispensers are expected to guide clients on indications, contraindications, and withdrawal periods of veterinary drugs. This study assessed veterinary drug dispensers’ KAP toward AMR and associated potential contributing factors. A cross-sectional study, using a structured questionnaire, was conducted in three main cities of Malawi, namely Mzuzu, Lilongwe, and Blantyre. A total of 68 agrovet shops were selected using a simple random sampling technique. The KAP level was presented descriptively. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were run to investigate the relationships between the independent and outcome variable. Overall, the KAP score for knowledge, attitude, and practices was 46.7%, 49.2%, and 41.6%, respectively. The significant determinants of the knowledge were the practice of asking for a written prescription (OR: 16.291, 95% CI: 11.6–24.2) (p = 0.024), female (OR: 0.609, 95% CI: 0.3–0.9) (p = 0.001), and old age (≥35) (OR: 0.227, 95% CI: 0.1–0.5) (p = 0.04). Poor knowledge, negative attitude, and poor practices were observed among most of the participants. Sensitization and training on AMR and antimicrobial stewardship are recommended to address the KAP score gaps and the observed determinants among veterinary drug dispensers. Full article
