The accurate and precise measurement of lubricating oil consumption is critical for developing environmentally friendly internal combustion engines, particularly hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines. The deuterium tracer method is based on the addition of poly-deuterated base oil tracers to fully formulated oils for precise, accurate, and fast lubricating oil consumption measurements. Previously performed measurements have shown that the use of poly-deuterated poly-alpha olefins has minimal impact on lubricating oil properties, except for a slight drop in oil viscosity. To further reduce the impact on lubricating oil characteristics, a new base oil for the synthesis of a poly-deuterated tracer is introduced, and its influence on the lubricating oil’s chemical, tribological, and rheological properties is analyzed. Furthermore, the influence of the tracer addition on the preignition tendencies of the fully formulated oil is also examined. Based on the analyses, no relevant changes in the lubricating oil properties, such as viscosity, density, and thermal degradation behavior, can be observed. Additionally, the deuterium tracer does not negatively influence combustion anomalies, thus reducing preignition tendencies. These results establish the method’s compatibility with new-generation engines, especially hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines. Full article

Electric motors play a decisive role in electric vehicles by converting electrical energy into mechanical motion across various drivetrain components. However, failures in these motors can interrupt the motor function, with approximately 40% of these failures stemming from bearing issues. Key contributors to bearing degradation include shaft voltage, bearing current, and electric discharge material spalling current, especially in motors powered by inverters or variable frequency drives. This review explores the tribological and vibrational aspects of bearing currents, analyzing their mechanisms and influence on electric motor performance. It addresses the challenges faced by electric vehicles, such as high-speed operation, elevated temperatures, electrical conductivity, and energy efficiency. This study investigates the origins of bearing currents, damage linked to shaft voltage and electric discharge material spalling current, and the effects of lubricant properties on bearing functionality. Moreover, it covers various methods for measuring shaft voltage and bearing current, as well as strategies to alleviate the adverse impacts of bearing currents. This comprehensive analysis aims to shed light on the detrimental effects of bearing currents on the performance and lifespan of electric motors in electric vehicles, emphasizing the importance of tribological considerations for reliable operation and durability. The aim of this study is to address the engineering problem of bearing failure in inverter-fed EV motors by integrating electrical, tribological, and lubrication perspectives. The novelty lies in proposing a conceptual link between lubricant breakdown and damage morphology to guide mitigation strategies. The study tasks include literature review, analysis of bearing current mechanisms and diagnostics, and identification of technological trends. The findings provide insights into lubricant properties and diagnostic approaches that can support industrial solutions. Full article

This study is among the first to characterize the tensile response of composites with quadriaxial glass fiber fabrics designed for marine structural applications. Four composite configurations were fabricated at laboratory scale, combining two matrix types (unsaturated polyester resin and epoxy resin) and the presence or absence of a Coremat Xi3 middle layer. Tensile tests were conducted at four test rates (10 mm/min, 200 mm/min, 500 mm/min, and 1000 mm/min), ranging from quasi-static to moderately dynamic conditions. Tests were conducted using the Instron 5982 universal testing machine (from Laboratory for Advanced Materials and Tribology, INCAS Bucharest, Romania). The specimens have a rectangular cross section, in agreement with SR EN ISO 527-4:2023. For strain measurements, an Instron advanced video extensometer (AVE) was used. Key mechanical parameters, such as maximum force, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, strain at break, and energy absorption, were extracted and analyzed. Results show that the polyester-based composite without a mat interlayer displayed the best overall performance, with the highest ultimate strength (~280 MPa), significant energy absorption (~106 J), and a consistent increase in ductility with increasing test rate. In contrast, the epoxy composite with Coremat Xi3 exhibited lower stiffness and strength, but higher strain and energy absorption at higher test rates, indicating a progressive failure behavior. These findings enhance the understanding of the tensile response of composites made of quadriaxial glass fiber fabric and provide valuable design data for structural components in marine environments, where both strength and energy absorption are essential. These insights support producers and end-users of non-crimp fabrics in making experimentally based selections of a composite, technological strategies, and design optimization. Full article

Worm gears are used in various mechanical constructions, especially in heavy industrial plants, where they are exposed to high operating loads, large torques, and high temperatures, particularly in conditions where it is necessary for the input and output shafts to be at an angle of 90°. Regarding tribological optimization, the application of carbon nanotube in lubricants can lead to significant improvements in the performance characteristics of worm gears, both in terms of increasing efficiency and reducing the coefficient of friction and wear, as well as minimizing mechanical losses, noise, and vibrations. The objective of this study is for the research results, through the use of oil with varying percentages of carbon nanotube additives (CNTs), to contribute to the optimization of worm gears by improving efficiency, extending service life, and reducing vibrations—both within the gearbox itself and within the industrial facility where it is applied. The research methodology involved laboratory testing of a worm gear using lubricants with varying concentrations of carbon nanotube. During the experiment, measurements of efficiency, vibrations, and noise levels were conducted in order to determine the impact of these additives on the operational performance of the gear system. The main contribution of this research is reflected in the experimental confirmation that the use of lubricants with optimized concentrations of carbon nanotube significantly enhances the operational performance of worm gears by increasing efficiency and reducing vibrations and noise, thereby enabling tribological optimization that contributes to improved reliability, extended service life, and enhanced workplace ergonomics under demanding industrial conditions. Furthermore, experimental investigations have shown that the efficiency of the gearbox increases from an initial value of 0.42–0.65, which represents an increase of 54%, the vibrations of the worm gear decrease from an initial value of 5.83–2.56 mm/s2, which represents an decrease of 56%, while the noise was reduced from 87.5 to 77.2 dB, which represents an decrease of 12% with the increasing percentage of carbon nanotube additives in the lubricant, up to a maximum value of 1%. However, beyond this experimentally determined threshold, a decrease in the efficiency of the tested worm gearbox, as well as an increase in noise and vibration levels was recorded. Full article

Efficient lubrication lowers friction, wear, and energy losses in automotive drivetrain components. Advanced lubricants are key to sustainable transportation performance, durability, and efficiency. This study analyzes the tribological performance of Group III base oil with CuO and ZnO nanoadditive mixtures. These additives enhance the performance of Group III base oils, making them highly relevant for automotive lubricant applications. An Optimol SRV5 tribometer performed ball-on-disk sliding contact tests with 100Cr6 steel specimens subjected to a 50 N force and a temperature of 100 °C. The test settings are designed to mimic the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes commonly seen in the automobile industry. During the tests, the effect of nanoparticles on friction was measured. Microscopic wear analysis was performed on the worn specimens. The results demonstrate that adding 0.3 wt% CuO nanoparticles to Group III base oil achieves a 19% reduction in dynamic friction and a 47% decrease in disk wear volume compared to additive-free oil. Notably, a 2:1 CuO-to-ZnO mixture produced synergy, delivering up to a 27% friction reduction and a 54% decrease in disk wear. The results show the synergistic effect of CuO and ZnO in reducing friction and wear on specimens. This study highlights the potential of nanoparticles for lubricant development and automotive applications. Full article

Comprehensive Experimental Optimization and Image-Driven Machine Learning Prediction of Tribological Performance in MWCNT-Reinforced Bio-Based Epoxy Nanocomposites

This study presents a multi-modal investigation into the wear behavior of bio-based epoxy composites reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at 0–0.75 wt%. A Taguchi L16 orthogonal array was employed to systematically assess the influence of MWCNT content, load (20–50 N), and sliding speed (1–2.5 m/s) on wear rate (WR), coefficient of friction (COF), and surface roughness (Ra). Statistical analysis revealed that MWCNT content contributed up to 85.35% to wear reduction, with 0.5 wt% identified as the optimal reinforcement level, achieving the lowest WR (3.1 mm3/N·m) and Ra (0.7 µm). Complementary morphological characterization via SEM and AFM confirmed microstructural improvements at optimal loading and identified degradation features (ploughing, agglomeration) at 0 wt% and 0.75 wt%. Regression models (R2 > 0.95) effectively captured the nonlinear wear response, while a Random Forest model trained on GLCM-derived image features (e.g., correlation, entropy) yielded WR prediction accuracy of R2 ≈ 0.93. Key image-based predictors were found to correlate strongly with measured tribological metrics, validating the integration of surface texture analysis into predictive modeling. This integrated framework combining experimental design, mathematical modeling, and image-based machine learning offers a robust pathway for designing high-performance, sustainable nanocomposites with data-driven diagnostics for wear prediction. The aim of the present study is to investigate the influence of Nickel–Hexagonal Boron Nitride (Ni-hBN) nanocomposite coatings, deposited using the pulse reverse current electrodeposition technique. This experimental study focuses on assessing the tribological and corrosion properties of the produced coatings on the SS304 substrate. The microhardness of the as-deposited (AD) sample and heat-treated (HT) sample were 49% and 83.8% higher compared to the control sample. The HT sample exhibited a grain size which was approximately 9.7% larger than the AD sample owing to the expansion–contraction mechanism of grains during heat treatment and sudden quenching. Surface roughness reduced after coating, where the Ni-hBN-coated sample measured a roughness of 0.43 µm compared to 0.48 µm for the bare surface. The average coefficient of friction for the AD sample was 42.4% lower than the bare surface owing to the self-lubricating properties of nano hBN. In particular, the corrosion rate of the AD sample was found to be 0.062 mm/year, which was lower than values reported in other studies. As such, findings from the present study can be particularly beneficial for applications in the automotive and aerospace industries, where enhanced wear resistance, reduced friction, and superior corrosion protection are critical for components such as engine parts, gears, bearings and shafts. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study of the structure, phase composition, thermal corrosion, and tribological properties of multilayer gradient coatings based on YSZ/NiCrAlY obtained using detonation spraying. X-ray phase analysis showed that the coatings consist entirely of metastable tetragonal zirconium dioxide (t’-ZrO2) phase stabilized by high temperature and rapid cooling during spraying. SEM analysis confirmed the multilayer gradient phase distribution and high density of the structure. Wear resistance, optical profilometry, wear quantification, and coefficient of friction measurements were used to evaluate the operational stability. The results confirm that the structural parameters of the coating, such as porosity and phase gradient, play a key role in improving its resistance to thermal corrosion and CMAS melt, which makes such coatings promising for use in high-temperature applications. It is shown that a dense and thick coating effectively prevents the penetration of aggressive media, providing a high barrier effect and minimal structural damage. Tribological tests in the temperature range from 21 °C to 650 °C revealed that the best characteristics are observed at 550 °C: minimum coefficient of friction (0.63) and high stability in the stage of stable wear. At room temperature and at 650 °C, there is an increase in wear due to the absence or destabilization of the protective layer. Full article

The surface quality of biomedical implants, such as shoulder joint caps, plays a critical role in their performance, longevity, and biocompatibility. Most biomedical shoulder joints fail to reach their optimal functionality when finished through conventional techniques like grinding and lapping due to their inability to achieve nanometer-grade smoothness, which results in greater wear and friction along with potential failure. The advanced magnetorheological finishing (MRF) approach provides enhanced surface quality through specific dimensional control material removal. This research evaluates how MRF treatment affects the surface roughness performance and microhardness properties and wear resistance behavior of cobalt–chromium alloy shoulder joint caps which have biocompatible qualities. The study implements a magnetorheological finishing system built with an electromagnetic tool to achieve the surface roughness improvements from 0.35 µm to 0.03 µm. The microhardness measurements show that MRF applications lead to a rise from HV 510 to HV 560 which boosts the wear protection of samples. After MRF finishing, the coefficient of friction demonstrates a decrease from 0.12 to 0.06 which proves improved tribological properties of these implants. The results show that MRF technology delivers superior benefits for biomedical use as it extends implant life span and decreases medical complications leading to better patient health outcomes. The purposeful evaluation of finishing techniques and their effects on implant functionality demonstrates MRF is an advanced technology for upcoming orthopedic implants while yielding high precision and enhanced durability and functional output. Friction leads to substantial energy losses and wear in mechanical systems. This study explores the tribological potential of the high-temperature superconductor precursor Y2BaCuO5 (Y211), synthesized via chemical co-precipitation, as a novel additive to PAO6 base oil. A 0.3 wt.% Y211/PAO6 lubricant (CD) was formulated using ultrasonic dispersion. Tribological performance was evaluated using a custom end-face tribometer (steel-on-iron) under varying loads (100–500 N) and speeds (300–500 rpm), comparing CD to neat PAO6. The results indicate that the Y211 additive consistently reduced the coefficient of friction (COF) relative to neat PAO6, maintaining a stable value around ~0.1. However, its effectiveness was strongly load-dependent: a significant friction reduction was observed at 100 N, while the benefit diminished at higher loads (>200 N), with the COF peaking around 200 N. Rotational speed exerted minimal influence. Compared with neat PAO6, the inclusion of 0.3 wt.% Y211 resulted in a reduction in the coefficient of friction by approximately 50% under low-load conditions (100 N), with COF values decreasing from 0.1 to 0.045. Wear depth measurements also revealed a reduction of over 30%, supporting the additive’s anti-wear efficacy. Y211 demonstrates potential as a friction-reducing additive, particularly under low loads, but its high-load performance limitations warrant further optimization and mechanistic studies. This highlights a novel tribological application for Y211. The objective of this study is to evaluate the tribological effectiveness of Y2BaCuO5 (Y211) as a lubricant additive, investigate its load-dependent friction behavior, and explore its feasibility as a multifunctional additive leveraging its superconductive precursor structure. To elucidate the key material parameters governing the tribological performance of ceramic composites under dry sliding against steel, this study presents a comprehensive comparative assessment of the microstructural characteristics, mechanical performance, and tribological behavior of two alumina–zirconia (Al2O3–ZrO2) ceramic composites, each reinforced with a 42 vol.% carbide phase: zirconium carbide (ZrC) and tungsten carbide (WC). Specifically, tungsten carbide (WC) was selected for its exceptional bulk mechanical properties, while zirconium carbide (ZrC) was chosen to contrast its potentially different interfacial reactivity against a steel counterface. ZrC and WC were selected as reinforcing phases due to their high hardness and distinct chemical and interfacial properties, which were expected to critically affect the wear and friction behavior of the composites under demanding conditions. Specimens were consolidated via spark plasma sintering (SPS). The investigation encompassed macro- and nanoscale hardness measurements (Vickers hardness HV1, HV10; nanoindentation hardness H), elastic modulus (E), fracture toughness (KIC), coefficient of friction (COF), and specific wear rate (Ws) under unlubricated reciprocating sliding against 100Cr6 steel at normal loads of 10 N and 25 N. The Al2O3–ZrO2–WC composite exhibited an ultrafine-grained microstructure and markedly enhanced mechanical properties (HV10 ≈ 20.9 GPa; H ≈ 33.6 GPa; KIC ≈ 4.7 MPa·m½) relative to the coarse-grained Al2O3–ZrO2–ZrC counterpart (HV10 ≈ 16.6 GPa; H ≈ 27.0 GPa; KIC ≈ 3.2 MPa·m½). Paradoxically, the ZrC-reinforced composite demonstrated superior tribological performance, with a low and load-independent specific wear rate (Ws ≈ 1.2 × 10−9 mm3/Nm) and a stable steady-state COF of approximately 0.46. Conversely, the WC-reinforced system exhibited significantly elevated wear volumes—particularly under the 25 N regime—and a higher, more fluctuating COF. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) of the wear tracks revealed the formation of a continuous, iron-enriched tribofilm on the ZrC composite, derived from counterface material transfer, whereas the WC composite surface displayed only sparse tribofilm development. These findings underscore that, in steel-paired tribological applications of Al2O3–ZrO2–based composites, the efficacy of interfacial tribolayer generation can supersede intrinsic bulk mechanical attributes as the dominant factor governing wear resistance. Biodegradable composite materials enhanced with food waste for tribological applications are proposed in this article. Polymer materials used as matrices included polypropylene and polylactic acid, which, according to the manufacturers’ claims, were made entirely or partially from biodegradable raw materials. Additionally, the matrices were enhanced with three types of waste materials: powders derived from cherry and plum stones, and pomace extracted from flax seeds. The composites differed in the percentage content of filler (15 or 25 wt.%) and particle size (d < 400 µm or d > 400 µm). Thirty-minute block-on-ring friction tests were performed to determine frictional behaviour (when pairing with steel), and the wear mechanisms were analysed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, supplemented with Raman spectroscopy. A notable effect of cherry and plum stone fillers was observed as a reduction in motion resistance, as measured by the friction coefficient. This reduction was evident across all material configurations in polypropylene-based composites and was significant at the lowest concentrations and granulation in polylactic acid composites. The effect of flaxseed pomace filler was ambiguous for both composite bases. Full article

Wafer cleaning after chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) is a critical processing step for copper metallization in integrated circuits. Post-CMP cleaning (PCMPC) commonly combines surface (electro)chemistry with the tribology of brush scrubbing to remove CMP residues from wafer surfaces. While the complex mechanisms of brush-operated PCMPC are supported by this combination, the conventional electroanalytical methods of assessing PCMPC efficiency are typically operated in the absence of surface brushing. Using a model experimental system with tartaric acid (TA) as a cost-effective cleaner of Cu-oxides, we illustrate here how post-CMP Cu samples can be electrochemically examined using brush cleaning to design/assess PCMPC test solutions. A pH-neutral cleaning solution is employed, where TA also serves as a partial dissolution suppressor of Cu, and CMP-treated wafer samples are scrubbed with a commercial PCMPC brush as sample surfaces are simultaneously probed with electrochemical measurements. The results show the active roles of tribology/lubrication and surface chemistry in the removal of CMP residues. The electrochemically determined residue removal efficiencies of PCMPC are found to be ~97% and ~56% in the presence and in the absence of surface brushing, respectively. The implications of these findings are explored in the general context of evaluating PCMPC formulations. Full article

The paper focuses on the experimental investigation of the impact of filtration and tribological parameters on the reliability, service life, and functional characteristics of gear mechanisms used in robotics. The primary objective was to analyze the importance of lubricant cleanliness in robotic transmission modules and to assess the effectiveness of filtration as a preventive and protective measure. As part of the research, a dedicated test rig was designed and developed. Based on the measurements and analyses performed, a significant correlation was confirmed between lubricant contamination levels and degradation phenomena in transmission modules. The study also highlights a sharp increase in contamination during the initial hours of operation, emphasizing the need for early intervention and continuous monitoring. The findings have strong practical potential and are highly relevant for manufacturers of robotic systems, maintenance service providers, and operators of automated production lines. The results contribute to increased system reliability and extended service life, reduced maintenance and repair costs, and improved environmental aspects of robotic system maintenance. Full article

Xerostomia significantly compromises oral comfort, mucosal integrity, and denture retention. While topical therapies such as oral gels are commonly used to manage symptoms, their effectiveness remains limited due to an inability to replicate the complex biochemical and mechanical functions of natural saliva. This review explores the pathophysiology of salivary dysfunction, the structural and functional roles of mucins, and the tribological and rheological demands of the oral environment—particularly in denture wearers. Emphasis is placed on the interplay between mucosal surfaces, salivary films, and prosthetic biomaterials, as well as the importance of mucoadhesion and aqueous boundary lubrication. A rheological comparison of commercially available oral gels and whole human saliva (WHS) reveals that gels are significantly more viscous and elastic, yet fail to mimic the dynamic responsiveness of saliva. Current formulations lack functional standardization and labeling, limiting clinical guidance. The study proposes design principles for next-generation gels that incorporate amphiphilic, biomimetic components and measurable performance benchmarks. Full article
