The multi-passage lubrication system is adopted to meet the demand of the main heat generation parts (gears and bearings) in the three-stage planetary transmission system of a large tracked vehicle. As rotational speed increases, the flow regime inside the passages with multi-oil outlets becomes highly complex. Under high-speed conditions, the flow rate in Zone 2 decreases sharply, and some oil outlets even drop to zero, representing a 100% reduction amplitude, which results in an unstable oil supply for heat generation parts and even potential lubrication cut-off. In the present work, the lubrication characteristics of the oil supply system for the three-stage planetary transmission system are investigated by a combination of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations and experiments. A complete CFD model of the multi-passage lubrication system is established, comprising a stationary oil passage, a main oil passage, and a three-stage variable-speed oil passage. A transient calculation method based on sliding mesh rotation domain control is used to simulate the oil-filling process in the oil passages, and the oil supply characteristics of the variable-speed oil passage are investigated. A test bench for the multi-stage planetary transmission system is designed and constructed to collect oil flow data from outlets of planetary gear sets. The comparison between simulated and experimental results confirms the validity of the proposed numerical method. Additionally, numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effects of key factors, including input speed, oil supply pressure, and oil temperature, on the oil flow rate of outlets. The results indicate that the rotational speed is the major parameter affecting the oil flow rate at the oil passage outlets. This work provides a practical guidance for optimizing lubrication design in complex multi-stage planetary transmission systems. Full article

This study investigates the hydraulic transient behavior and optimization of air-vent configurations in the combined tailrace–diversion system of a hydropower station. The inlet flow boundary conditions were derived from the method of characteristics (MOC), and flow variations were incorporated into the CFD model using a user-defined function (UDF). The CFD results were validated by comparing them to MOC-based simulations of surge oscillations in the downstream chamber. Six different air-vent configurations, varying in number and diameter, were tested under high-water-level load-acceptance and load-rejection conditions. The results demonstrate that increasing the vent diameter, particularly to 3 m, significantly improves pressure regulation and air exchange efficiency, enhancing system stability. In contrast, simply increasing the number of vents did not lead to noticeable improvements. Sensitivity analysis of vent height revealed that raising the vent height from 12 m to 15 m provides sufficient freeboard to prevent overflow, without overdesign. These findings provide practical guidance for optimizing air-vent configurations in hydropower tailrace systems, improving hydraulic stability, and ensuring safe operation. Full article

As a core safety component in the hydraulic system of CNC stretching pads, the safety locking valve undertakes precise stamping position maintenance and emergency braking protection; its performance dictates the hydraulic system’s operational stability. Existing ones induce hydraulic oil volume dynamic changes during opening/closing, significantly affecting blank holder force control. To solve this, its structure is innovatively optimized. Based on the CFD method, a dynamic calculation framework integrating unsteady flow characteristics and structural motion characteristics has been constructed, realizing accurate simulation research on the dynamic characteristics of the safety locking valve. Through simulation analysis, the distribution law of the internal flow field during the transient opening and closing process of the locking valve has been thoroughly explored, the distribution mechanism of the transient flow field has been systematically revealed, and finally, the fluid regulation characteristic parameters of the safety locking valve have been obtained, providing an important theoretical basis for subsequent engineering applications. Among the various completion strategies used in multi-stage hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells, the limited entry design has become one of the most common approaches to promote more uniform slurry distribution. This method involves reducing the number of perforations so that higher perforation friction is generated at each entry point. The increased pressure drops force fluid and proppant to be diverted across multiple clusters rather than concentrating at only a few, thereby enhancing stimulation efficiency along the lateral. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed to investigate how perforation erosion influences acoustic signals measured by Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). Unlike previous studies that assumed perfectly circular perforations, this work uses oval-shaped geometries to better reflect the irregular erosion observed in the field, which provides more realistic modeling. The workflow involved building wellbore and perforation geometries, generating computational meshes, and solving transient turbulent flow using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) coupled with the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic model. Acoustic pressure was then estimated at receiver points and converted into sound pressure level for analysis. The results show that, for a given perforation size, changes in flow rate cause log(q) versus sound pressure level to follow a straight line defined by a constant slope and varying intercept. Even when erosion alters the perforation into an oval shape, the intercept increases logarithmically, resulting in reduced sound amplitude, while the slope remains unchanged. Furthermore, when the cross-sectional area and flow rate are equal, oval perforations produce higher sound amplitudes than circular ones, suggesting that perforation geometry has a measurable influence on the DAS signal. This indicates that even when the same amplitude DAS signal is obtained, assuming circular perforations when estimating the fluid distribution leads to an overestimation if the actual perforation shape is oval. These findings highlight the importance of considering irregular erosion patterns when linking DAS responses to fluid distribution during hydraulic fracturing. Full article

This study presents a computational–experimental assessment of two industrial centrifugal fans used in cement production, focusing on aerodynamic optimization and energy efficiency validation. The first case concerns a Farin Kiln Filter Fan initially constrained by existing inlet duct geometry, which caused vortex formation, flow asymmetry, and a pressure loss exceeding 15%. CFD analyses identified major inlet vortices and asymmetric splitter loading, guiding a redesigned configuration with an expanded fan body (1982–2520 mm), an increased outlet width (1808–1858 mm), and a vortex breaker to stabilize inlet flow. CFD simulations indicated a flow rate of 601,241 m3/h, static pressure of 2200 Pa, and total pressure of 2580 Pa, achieving an 83% efficiency. Field validation confirmed a 34.4% reduction in shaft power, 30% decrease in torque, and 4% gain in efficiency, corresponding to 449 MWh/year energy savings and 180 t CO2/year emission reduction, assuming 8000 operational hours. The second case involves an Induced Draft (ID) Fan designed for 441,643 m3/h flow at 990 rpm. Transient CFD simulations using the SST k–ω model captured rotor–stator interaction and confirmed the effectiveness of the design revisions in suppressing swirl and flow separation. The optimized design achieved 8653 Pa static pressure, 9203 Pa total pressure, and 83% efficiency under design conditions. Field measurements showed a 26.2% drop in shaft power and 19.6% improvement in efficiency, yielding 2527 MWh/year energy savings and an estimated 1011 t CO2/year emission reduction. Overall, the CFD-guided redesign framework demonstrated strong alignment between simulations and field measurements, highlighting the method’s practical relevance for improving fan performance and energy sustainability in industrial systems. The paper presents the findings of an analysis of a tank subjected to thermal effects caused by variations in air and liquid temperatures. The structural analysis focuses on the influence that thermal actions exert on the distribution of prestressing force. One of the important aspects addressed is the application of transient heat transfer analysis instead of the steady-state approach, allowing for a more accurate yet realistic representation of thermal effects within load combinations used to evaluate prestressing force. The study suggests that thermal actions should reflect the average annual temperatures of air and liquid separately, considering the transient thermal field. This hypothesis contradicts the standard approach. Numerical simulations using the finite element method were conducted in order to model transient heat transfer (CFD model) and the structural response of the tank (with axisymmetric shell model). The results indicated that temperature gradients across the tank wall may be linear or non-linear, varying with time and the amplitude of air temperature. Consequently, a modified formula for the reduced temperature gradient is proposed. The research emphasises the importance of incorporating transient thermal effects and the temperature-influenced distribution of prestressing force, which may have a significant impact on the safety of prestressed tanks. This paper reviews and analyzes three types of vertical-axis wind rotors: the classic Savonius, spiral Savonius, and Darrieus designs. Using numerical modeling methods, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), their aerodynamic characteristics, power output, and efficiency under different operating conditions are examined. Key parameters such as lift, drag, torque, and power coefficient are compared to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each rotor. Results highlight that the Darrieus rotor demonstrates the highest efficiency at higher wind speeds due to lift-based operation, while the spiral Savonius offers improved stability, smoother torque characteristics, and adaptability in turbulent or low-wind environments. The classic Savonius, though less efficient, remains simple, cost-effective, and suitable for small-scale urban applications where reliability is prioritized over high performance. In addition, the study outlines the importance of blade geometry, tip speed ratio, and advanced materials in enhancing rotor durability and efficiency. The integration of modern optimization approaches, such as CFD-based design improvements and machine learning techniques, is emphasized as a promising pathway for developing more reliable and sustainable vertical-axis wind turbines. Although the primary analysis relies on numerical simulations, the observed performance trends are consistent with findings reported in experimental studies, indicating that the results are practically meaningful for design screening, technology selection, and siting decisions. Unlike prior studies that analyze Savonius and Darrieus rotors in isolation or under heterogeneous setups, this work (i) establishes a harmonized, fully specified CFD configuration (common domain, BCs, turbulence/near-wall treatment, time-stepping) enabling like-for-like comparison; (ii) couples the transient aerodynamic loads p(θ,t) into a dynamic FEA + fatigue pipeline (rainflow + Miner with mean-stress correction), going beyond static loading proxies; (iii) quantifies a prototype-stage materials choice rationale (aluminum) with a validated migration path to orthotropic composites; and (iv) reports reproducible wake/torque metrics that are cross-checked against mature models (DMST/actuator-cylinder), providing design-ready envelopes for small/medium VAWTs. Overall, the work provides recommendations for selecting rotor types under different wind conditions and operational scenarios to maximize energy conversion performance and long-term reliability. Wave loads significantly influence offshore structure design; the structures must be strong enough to resist those loads. On the other hand, waves can be used as a renewable energy source if the loads are adequately exploited. The wave loads can be obtained by experimental methods or simulations. However, experimental methods are costly and limited in shape, accuracy, and the details of the measurements. This study uses the CFD method to capture the interaction between waves and a partially submerged object. The simulations are performed by utilizing two-phase open-channel transient flow and Volume of Fluid (VOF) techniques. The simulations are performed for different wave scenarios, i.e., wave height and frequency. Simulation results are validated by experimental tests. The experiments are performed in a dedicated lab, which includes a water tank with a wave generator and a facility for measuring drag and lift forces. The study focuses on the study of wave loads on partially submerged objects. The CFD simulations show strong consistency with the experimental data. The results show load distribution over the floating objects that can be used to design proper structures for resisting or energy-harvesting wave loads. Full article

A multiphase model of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) using the computational fluid dynamics coupling discrete element method (CFD-DEM) is used to simulate biocrude oil production from sludge flocs in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Additionally, the influence of the agitator speed and the slurry flow rate on dynamic biocrude oil production is investigated through full transient CFD analysis in a scaled-up CSTR study. The kinetics of the HTL mechanism as a function of temperature, pressure, and residence time distribution were employed in the model through a user-defined function (UDF). The multiphysics simulation of the HTL process in a stirred tank reactor using the Lagrangian–Eulerian (LE) approach, along with a standard k-ε turbulence model, integrated HTL kinetics. The simulation accounts for particle–fluid interactions by coupling CFD-derived hydrodynamic fields with discrete particle motion, enabling prediction of individual particle trajectories based on drag, buoyancy, and interphase momentum exchange. The three-phase flow using a compressible non-ideal gas model and multiphase interaction as design requirements increased process efficiency in high-pressure and high-temperature model conditions. This study presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to investigate fluid flow and heat transfer within the growth zone of gallium nitride crystals synthesized via the alkaline ammonothermal method, with particular emphasis on the influence of seed crystal arrangement and installation geometry. The model analyzes temperature and velocity distributions, highlighting how seed configuration affects turbulent and transitional flow behavior. Key findings demonstrate the effectiveness of CFD in evaluating and optimizing growth zone design. Both simulation and experimental results show that achieving more uniform flow and temperature fields leads to more consistent growth rates and improved structural crystal quality. Furthermore, the study underscores the critical role of installation geometry in shaping flow characteristics such as velocity distribution, temperature gradients, and their transient fluctuations, factors essential for optimizing the ammonothermal crystallization process. In response to the growing demand for lightweight and high-efficiency industrial equipment, this study addresses the critical issue of lubrication failure in high-speed, heavy-duty gear reducers, which often leads to reduced transmission efficiency and premature mechanical damage. A three-dimensional transient multiphysics-coupled model of oil-jet lubrication is developed based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model integrates the Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase flow method with the shear stress transport (SST) k−ω turbulence model. This framework enables the accurate capture of oil-jet interface fragmentation, reattachment, and turbulence-coupled behavior within the gear meshing region. A parametric study is conducted on oil injection velocities ranging from 20 to 50 m/s to elucidate the coupling mechanisms between geometric configuration and flow dynamics, as well as their impacts on oil film evolution, energy dissipation, and thermal management. The results reveal that the proposed method can reveal the dynamic evolution characteristics of the gear injection lubrication. Adopting an appropriately moderate injection velocity (30 m/s) improves oil film coverage and continuity, with the lubricant transitioning from discrete droplets to a dense wedge-shaped film within the meshing zone. Optimal lubrication performance is achieved at this velocity, where oil shear-carrying capacity and kinetic energy utilization efficiency are maximized, while excessive turbulent kinetic energy dissipation is effectively suppressed. Dynamic monitoring data at point P further corroborate that a well-tuned injection velocity stabilizes lubricant-velocity fluctuations and improves lubricant oil distribution, thereby promoting consistent oil film formation and more efficient heat transfer. The proposed closed-loop collaborative framework—comprising model initialization, numerical solution, and post-processing—together with the introduced quantitative evaluation metrics, provides a solid theoretical foundation and engineering reference for structural optimization, energy control, and thermal reliability design of gearbox lubrication systems. This work offers important insights into precision lubrication of high-speed transmissions and contributes to the sustainable, green development of industrial machinery. Full article

Snow and ice accumulation on transportation infrastructure presents significant safety and maintenance challenges in cold regions, while conventional removal methods are both energy-intensive and environmentally detrimental. This study proposes a passive Heat Pipe–Coupled Geothermal Snow Melting System (HP-GSMS) that harnesses shallow geothermal energy to maintain snow-free surfaces without external energy input. Using Fluent-based CFD simulations, the system’s thermal performance was evaluated under various working fluids (ammonia, carbon dioxide, water) and pipe materials (stainless steel, aluminum). A one-dimensional thermal resistance model validated the CFD results under ammonia–stainless steel conditions, predicting a heat flux of 358.6 W/m2 compared to 361.0 W/m2 from the simulation, with a deviation of only 0.66%, confirming model accuracy. Ammonia demonstrated superior phase-change efficiency, with the aluminum–ammonia configuration yielding the highest heat flux (up to 677 W/m2), surpassing typical snow-melting thresholds. Aluminum pipes enhanced radial heat conduction without compromising phase stability, while water exhibited poor phase-change performance and CO2 showed moderate but stable behavior. Additionally, a dynamic three-node RC thermal network was employed to assess transient performance under realistic diurnal temperature variations, revealing surface heat fluxes ranging from 230 to 460 W/m2, with a daily average of approximately 340 W/m2. These findings demonstrate the HP-GSMS’s practical viability in cold climates and underscore the importance of selecting low-boiling-point fluids and high-conductivity materials for scalable, energy-efficient, and low-carbon snow-melting applications in urban infrastructure. In this article, thermal investigation methods for electrically insulating and thermally conductive substrate materials will be presented. The investigations were performed in their real-world application environment, i.e., in the form of IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) module substrate plates. First, the overall thermal resistance and thermal structure function of the system in a multivariable parameter space were revealed using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations. Afterwards, thermal transient testing was performed on real samples, with the help of which the thermal resistance values of the modules were determined using the thermal dual interface test method. The presented tests are not intended to determine material parameters, but to rank different substrate materials based on their thermal performance. Full article

Compressor Diffuser Design Impact on a Microjet Working Line—An Experimental and Numerical Case Study

This study examines the performance of two diffuser configurations—a trumpet-shaped and a semi-diagonal design—for application in micro gas turbine engines, aiming to assess their suitability in terms of efficiency and operational flexibility. Both diffusers were initially evaluated using steady-state CFD simulations with the k-omega SST turbulence model, followed by experimental testing on an actual engine across the start-up sequence from idle to 70% of nominal speed. Performance was mapped over four constant-speed lines for each configuration. Results showed that the trumpet-shaped diffuser offered a greater choke margin but suffered from increased aerodynamic losses, whereas the semi-diagonal diffuser demonstrated higher efficiency but required closer alignment with the target operating point. The k-omega SST model showed strong predictive accuracy, with 5.13% agreement across all instrumented parameters for all investigated speed lines. These findings suggest that while the trumpet diffuser provides better stability, the semi-diagonal design is more efficient when properly targeted. Future work will focus on extending the analysis to higher speed ranges and transient regimes using harmonic balance CFD methods and enhanced data acquisition techniques. Full article

Aiming at the problems of low thermal analysis efficiency and high computational cost of traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for modular fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous motors (MFT-PMSMs) under complex working conditions, this paper proposes a fast modeling and calculation method of motor temperature field based on a high-efficiency and high-precision network algorithm. In this method, the physical structure of the motor is equivalent to a parameterized network model, and the computational efficiency is significantly improved by model partitioning and Fourth-order Runge Kutta method. The temperature change of the cooling medium is further considered, and the temperature rise change of the motor at different spatial positions is effectively considered. Based on the finite element method (FEM), the space loss distribution under rated, single-phase open circuit and overload conditions is obtained and mapped to the thermal network nodes. Through the transient thermal network solution, the rapid calculation of the temperature rise law of key components such as windings and permanent magnets is realized. The accuracy of the thermal network model was verified by using fluid-structure coupling simulation and prototype test for temperature analysis. This method provides an efficient tool for thermal safety assessment and optimization in the motor fault-tolerant design stage, especially for heat capacity check under extreme conditions and fault modes.
