The automatic detection of traffic accidents plays an increasingly vital role in advancing intelligent traffic monitoring systems and improving road safety. Leveraging computer vision techniques offers a promising solution, enabling rapid, reliable, and automated identification of accidents, thereby significantly reducing emergency response times. This study proposes an enhanced version of the YOLO11 architecture, termed YOLO11-AMF. The proposed model integrates a Mamba-Like Linear Attention (MLLA) mechanism, an Asymptotic Feature Pyramid Network (AFPN), and a novel Focaler-IoU loss function to optimize traffic accident detection performance under complex and diverse conditions. The MLLA module introduces efficient linear attention to improve contextual representation, while the AFPN adopts an asymptotic feature fusion strategy to enhance the expressiveness of the detection head. The Focaler-IoU further refines bounding box regression for improved localization accuracy. To evaluate the proposed model, a custom dataset of traffic accident images was constructed. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced model achieves precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50–95 scores of 96.5%, 82.9%, 90.0%, and 66.0%, respectively, surpassing the baseline YOLO11n by 6.5%, 6.0%, 6.3%, and 6.3% on these metrics. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed enhancements and suggest the model’s potential for robust and accurate traffic accident detection within real-world conditions. Background/Objectives: Traumatic brain injury (TBI), especially mild TBI (mTBI), is frequently caused by traffic accidents, falls, or sports injuries. Although computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for diagnosis, overuse can lead to unnecessary radiation exposure, increased healthcare costs, and emergency department saturation. Blood-based biomarkers have emerged as potential tools to optimize CT scan use. This systematic review aims to evaluate recent evidence on the role of specific blood biomarkers in guiding CT decisions in patients with mTBI. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane, and CINAHL databases for studies published between 2020 and 2024. Inclusion criteria focused on adult patients with mTBI evaluated using both CT imaging and at least one of the following biomarkers: glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1), and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B). After screening, six studies were included in the final review. Results: All included studies reported high sensitivity and negative predictive value for the selected biomarkers in detecting clinically relevant intracranial lesions. GFAP and UCH-L1, particularly in combination, consistently identified low-risk patients who could potentially forgo CT scans. While S100B also showed high sensitivity, discrepancies in cutoff values across studies highlighted the need for harmonization. Conclusions: Blood biomarkers such as GFAP, UCH-L1, and S100B demonstrate strong potential to reduce unnecessary CT imaging in mTBI by identifying patients at low risk of significant brain injury. Future research should focus on standardizing biomarker thresholds and validating protocols to support their integration into clinical practice guidelines. Full article

Given the severe global traffic safety challenges—including threats to human lives and socioeconomic impacts—this study analyzes visual behavior to promote sustainable transportation, improve road safety, and reduce resource waste and pollution caused by accidents. Four typical road sections, namely, turning, straight ahead, uphill, and downhill, were selected, and the eye movement data of 23 drivers in different driving stages were collected by aSee Glasses eye-tracking device to analyze the visual gaze characteristics of the drivers and their transfer patterns in each road section. Using Markov chain theory, the probability of staying at each gaze point and the transfer probability distribution between gaze points were investigated. The results of the study showed that drivers’ visual behaviors in different road sections showed significant differences: drivers in the turning section had the largest percentage of fixation on the near front, with a fixation duration and frequency of 29.99% and 28.80%, respectively; the straight ahead section, on the other hand, mainly focused on the right side of the road, with 31.57% of fixation duration and 19.45% of frequency of fixation; on the uphill section, drivers’ fixation duration on the left and right roads was more balanced, with 24.36% of fixation duration on the left side of the road and 25.51% on the right side of the road; drivers on the downhill section looked more frequently at the distance ahead, with a total fixation frequency of 23.20%, while paying higher attention to the right side of the road environment, with a fixation duration of 27.09%. In terms of visual fixation, the fixation shift in the turning road section was mainly concentrated between the near and distant parts of the road ahead and frequently turned to the left and right sides; the straight road section mainly showed a shift between the distant parts of the road ahead and the dashboard; the uphill road section was concentrated on the shift between the near parts of the road ahead and the two sides of the road, while the downhill road section mainly occurred between the distant parts of the road ahead and the rearview mirror. Although drivers’ fixations on the front of the road were most concentrated under the four road sections, with an overall fixation stability probability exceeding 67%, there were significant differences in fixation smoothness between different road sections. Through this study, this paper not only reveals the laws of drivers’ visual behavior under different driving environments but also provides theoretical support for behavior-based traffic safety improvement strategies. Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of injury and death among adolescents, making road safety education crucial. This study assesses the performance of and users’ opinions on the Route 2 School (R2S) traffic safety education program, designed for secondary school students (13–17 years) in Belgium. The program incorporates gamified e-learning modules containing, among others, podcasts, interactive 360° visuals, and virtual reality (VR), to enhance traffic knowledge, situation awareness, risk detection, and risk management. This study was conducted across several cities and municipalities within Belgium. More than 600 students from school years 3 to 6 completed the platform and of these more than 200 students filled in a comprehensive questionnaire providing detailed feedback on platform usability, preferences, and behavioral risk assessments. The results revealed shortcomings in traffic knowledge and skills, particularly among older students. Gender-based analysis indicated no significant performance differences overall, though females performed better in risk management and males in risk detection. Furthermore, students from cities outperformed those from municipalities. Feedback on the R2S platform indicated high usability and engagement, with VR-based simulations receiving the most positive reception. In addition, it was highlighted that secondary school students are high-risk groups for distraction and red-light violations as cyclists and pedestrians. This study demonstrates the importance of gamified, technology-enhanced road safety education while underscoring the need for module-specific improvements and regional customization. The findings support the broader application of e-learning methodologies for sustainable, behavior-oriented traffic safety education targeting adolescents. Full article

Traffic accidents pose a significant threat to public safety, resulting in numerous fatalities, injuries, and a substantial economic burden each year. The development of predictive models capable of the real-time forecasting of post-accident impact using readily available data can play a crucial role in preventing adverse outcomes and enhancing overall safety. However, existing accident predictive models encounter two main challenges: first, a reliance on either costly or non-real-time data, and second, the absence of a comprehensive metric to measure post-accident impact accurately. To address these limitations, this study proposes a deep neural network model known as the cascade model. It leverages readily available real-world data from Los Angeles County to predict post-accident impacts. The model consists of two components: Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The LSTM model captures temporal patterns, while the CNN extracts patterns from the sparse accident dataset. Furthermore, an external traffic congestion dataset is incorporated to derive a new feature called the “accident impact” factor, which quantifies the influence of an accident on surrounding traffic flow. Extensive experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid machine learning method in predicting the post-accident impact compared to state-of-the-art baselines. The results reveal a higher precision in predicting minimal impacts (i.e., cases with no reported accidents) and a higher recall in predicting more significant impacts (i.e., cases with reported accidents). Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered. Background: Midfacial fractures are common outcomes of facial trauma. While younger individuals typically sustain these injuries through high-energy events like assaults and traffic or sports accidents, elderly patients increasingly present with fractures from low-energy mechanisms, primarily falls. Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze age- and gender-specific patterns in midfacial fractures over a 10-year period, with emphasis on elderly individuals and low-energy trauma. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of proven midfacial fractures between 2013 and 2022 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (University of Pécs, Hungary). The patients were stratified by age (<65 vs. ≥65 years) and gender. The variables included the injury mechanism, fracture localization, the dental status, hospitalization, and the presence of associated injuries. Bivariate analyses were performed, and the significance level was set to p < 0.05. Results: A total of 957 radiologically confirmed midfacial fracture cases were evaluated, of whom 344 (35.9%) were ≥65 years old. In the elderly group, females had a 19-fold higher risk for midfacial trauma than younger females (OR: 19.1, 95%CI: 9.30–39.21). In the older group, a fall was significantly the most frequent injury mechanism (OR: 14.5; 95%CI: 9.9–21.3), responsible for 89.5% of the cases, while hospitalization (OR: 0.36; 95%CI: 0.23–0.56) was less characteristic. Most of the fractures occurred in the zygomatic bone, in the zygomaticomaxillary complex, or in the anterior wall of the maxilla. Associated injuries in the elderly group included mostly lower limb injuries—particularly pertrochanteric femoral fractures in females—and upper limb injuries, with a slight male dominance. Conclusions: Low-energy falls are the primary cause of midfacial fractures in elderly patients, particularly in women. Tailored prevention and management strategies are essential for improving the outcomes in this growing demographic group. Full article

This work focuses on the possibilities of generating synthetic data for machine learning in hazard prediction in area-based speed monitoring systems. The purpose of the research conducted was to develop a methodology for generating realistic synthetic data to support the design of a continuous vehicle speed monitoring system to minimize the risk of traffic accidents caused by speeding. The SUMO traffic simulator was used to model driver behavior in the analyzed area and within a given road network. Data from OpenStreetMap and field measurements from over a dozen speed detectors were integrated. Preliminary tests were carried out to record vehicle speeds. Based on these data, several simulation scenarios were run and compared to real-world observations using average speed, the percentage of speed limit violations, root mean square error (RMSE), and percentage compliance. A new metric, the Combined Speed Accuracy Score (CSAS), has been introduced to assess the consistency of simulation results with real-world data. For this study, a basic hazard prediction model was developed using LoRaWAN sensor network data and environmental contextual variables, including time, weather, location, and accident history. The research results in a method for evaluating and selecting the simulation scenario that best represents reality and drivers’ propensities to exceed speed limits. The results and findings demonstrate that it is possible to produce synthetic data with a level of agreement exceeding 90% with real data. Thus, it was shown that it is possible to generate synthetic data for machine learning in hazard prediction for area-based speed control systems using traffic simulators. Full article

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

When emergency incidents, such as bridge damage, abruptly occur on highways and lead to traffic disruptions, the multidimensionality and complexity of driver behaviors present significant challenges to the design of effective emergency response mechanisms. This study introduces a multi-level collaborative emergency mechanism grounded in driver behavior characteristics, aiming to enhance both traffic safety and emergency response efficiency through hierarchical collaboration and dynamic optimization strategies. By capitalizing on human drivers’ perception and decision-making attributes, a driver behavior classification model is developed to quantitatively assess the risk response capabilities of distinct behavioral patterns (conservative, risk-taking, and conformist) under emergency scenarios. A multi-tiered collaborative framework, comprising an early warning layer, a guidance layer, and an interception layer, is devised to implement tailored emergency strategies. Additionally, a rear-end collision risk propagation model is constructed by integrating the risk field model with probabilistic risk assessment, enabling dynamic adjustments to interception range thresholds for precise and real-time emergency management. The efficacy of this mechanism is substantiated through empirical case studies, which underscore its capacity to substantially reduce the occurrence of secondary accidents and furnish scientific evidence and technical underpinnings for emergency management pertaining to highway bridge damage. Autonomous driving systems have the potential to reduce traffic accidents dramatically; however, conventional modules often struggle to accurately detect risks in complex environments. This study presents a novel risk recognition system that integrates the reasoning capabilities of a large language model (LLM), specifically GPT-4, with traffic engineering domain knowledge. By incorporating surrogate safety measures such as time-to-collision (TTC) alongside traditional sensor and image data, our approach enhances the vehicle’s ability to interpret and react to potentially dangerous situations. Utilizing the realistic 3D simulation environment of CARLA, the proposed framework extracts comprehensive data—including object identification, distance, TTC, and vehicle dynamics—and reformulates this information into natural language inputs for GPT-4. The LLM then provides risk assessments with detailed justifications, guiding the autonomous vehicle to execute appropriate control commands. The experimental results demonstrate that the LLM-based module outperforms conventional systems by maintaining safer distances, achieving more stable TTC values, and delivering smoother acceleration control during dangerous scenarios. This fusion of LLM reasoning with traffic engineering principles not only improves the reliability of risk recognition but also lays a robust foundation for future real-time applications and dataset development in autonomous driving safety. As traffic accidents caused by black ice during the winter continue to occur, there is a growing need for technologies that enable drivers to recognize and respond to black ice in advance. In particular, to reduce major accidents and associated casualties, it is essential to provide timely information and prevent incidents through accurate prediction. This study developed and validated an integrated theoretical framework combining the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to investigate how driving assistance technologies (DATs) influence risky driving behaviors among young urban Chinese drivers. Based on this framework, we proposed and tested several hypotheses regarding the effects of psychological and technological factors on risky driving intentions and behaviors. A survey was conducted with 495 young drivers in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, examining psychological factors, technology acceptance, and their influence on risky driving behaviors. Structural equation modeling revealed that the integrated TPB-TAM explained 58.3% of the variance in behavioral intentions and 42.6% of the variance in actual risky driving behaviors, significantly outperforming single-theory models. Attitudes toward risky driving (β = 0.287) emerged as the strongest TPB predictor of behavioral intentions, while perceived usefulness (β = −0.172) and perceived ease of use (β = −0.113) of driving assistance technologies negatively influenced risky driving intentions. Multi-group analysis identified significant gender and driving experience differences. Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that model constructs significantly predicted actual traffic violations and accidents. These findings provide theoretical insights into risky driving determinants and practical guidance for developing targeted interventions and effective traffic safety policies for young drivers in urban China. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between visual functions and road traffic accidents (RTAs) by meta-analysis of observational studies. The analysis included all drivers of motor vehicles, regardless of age, and those using private or public transport. Self-reported visual outcomes were excluded. The risk of RTA in patients with reduced visual acuity was observed in commercial drivers in cross-sectional studies (PR 1.54, 95% CI 1.26–1.88), but not in private drivers in cohort (RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.74–1.46) or case–control studies (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.78–1.40). A non-statistically significant association between colour vision defects and RTA was observed in cross-sectional studies (PR 1.50, 95% CI 0.91–2.45). No evidence was found for an increased risk of accidents in people with reduced stereopsis. In older adults with abnormal contrast sensitivity, a weak risk of RTA was observed in cohort studies. Evidence from low-quality cross-sectional studies suggests an increased risk of RTAs among commercial drivers with reduced visual acuity. The few case–control and cohort studies identified did not show an association between accident occurrence and visual function. Attention needs to be paid to this issue to facilitate the conduct of high-quality research that can support the development of road safety policies. Full article

Background/Objectives: Providing appropriate treatment for pediatric patients after traffic accidents remains a significant challenge. Furthermore, limited studies have validated the long-term effectiveness and safety of integrative Korean medicine treatment (IKMT) based on follow-up periods of 6 months or longer for pediatric patients. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted, focused on children aged 0–6 years who visited one of seven Korean medicine hospitals after traffic accident injuries and received IKMT between 1 January 2019 and 30 June 2023. The primary outcome was the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) scores of chief complaints, and the secondary outcomes were quality of life, adverse events, and satisfaction with IKMT. Statistical analyses were conducted using paired t-tests and descriptive statistics, with a significance level of 5%. Results: Sixty-four participants were included in the retrospective chart review, and fifty-seven guardians responded to the surveys (mean age: 4.84 ± 1.26 years; mean duration of treatment: 19.20 ± 25.38 days). Among the immediate symptoms after the accidents, flashbacks and intrusive symptoms as well as nightmares and crying were the most common (50.9%). Following treatment, the NRS scores for flashbacks and intrusive symptoms and for nightmares and crying showed meaningful improvements from the time right after the accidents to the survey period. Follow-up confirmed that quality of life scores on all dimensions corresponded with those of healthy children. Nine adverse events were reported, and the participants fully recovered without the need for additional treatment. Furthermore, 91.2% of the survey respondents were satisfied with IKMT. Conclusions: IKMT was effective and safe for alleviating the post-accident symptoms in infants and young children aged 0–6 years involved in traffic accidents. Full article
