Amidst the background of accelerated global energy transition, the safety risk of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, especially the fire hazard, has become a key bottleneck hindering their large-scale application, and there is an urgent need to build a systematic prevention and control program. This paper focuses on the fire characteristics and thermal runaway mechanism of lithium-ion battery energy storage power stations, analyzing the current situation of their risk prevention and control technology across the dimensions of monitoring and early warning technology, thermal management technology, and fire protection technology, and comparing and analyzing the characteristics of each technology from multiple angles. Building on this analysis, this paper summarizes the limitations of the existing technologies and puts forward prospective development paths, including the development of multi-parameter coupled monitoring and warning technology, integrated and intelligent thermal management technology, clean and efficient extinguishing agents, and dynamic fire suppression strategies, aiming to provide solid theoretical support and technical guidance for the precise risk prevention and control of lithium-ion battery storage power stations. The efficiency of electric motors is highly dependent on their operating temperature, with lower temperatures contributing to enhanced performance, reliability, and extended service life. This study presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art cooling technologies and evaluates their impact on the thermal behavior of a commercial motor–generator system in high-demand applications. A baseline model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was developed using MotorCAD 2023® software, which was supported by reverse engineering techniques to accurately replicate the motor’s physical and thermal characteristics. Subsequently, multiple cooling strategies were simulated under consistent operating conditions to assess their effectiveness. These strategies include conventional axial water jackets as well as advanced oil-based methods such as shaft cooling and direct oil spray to the windings. The integration of these systems in hybrid configurations was also explored to maximize thermal efficiency. Simulation results reveal that hybrid cooling significantly reduces the temperature of critical components such as stator windings and permanent magnets. This reduction in thermal stress improves current efficiency, power output, and torque capacity, enabling reliable motor operation across a broader range of speeds and under sustained high-load conditions. The findings highlight the effectiveness of hybrid cooling systems in optimizing both thermal management and operational performance of electric machines. Full article

Climate change is disrupting marine ecosystems, necessitating a deeper understanding of environmental and fishing-related impacts on exploited species. This study examines the effects of physical factors (temperature, thermal anomalies, salinity, seabed conditions), biogeochemical elements (pH, oxygen levels, nutrients, primary production), and fishing pressure on the biomass of commercially important species in the Alboran Sea from 1999 to 2022. Data were sourced from the Copernicus observational program, focusing on the geographical sub-area 1 (GSA-1) zone across three depth ranges. Generalized Additive Models were applied for analysis. Rising temperatures and seasonal anomalies have largely negative effects, disrupting species’ physiological balance. Changes in water quality, including improved nutrient and oxygen concentrations, have yielded complex ecological responses. Fishing indices highlight the vulnerability of small pelagic fish to climate change and overfishing, underscoring their economic and ecological significance. These findings stress the urgent need for ecosystem-based management strategies that integrate climate change impacts to ensure sustainable marine resource management. Full article

This study investigated the nuanced influence of urban morphology on the thermal performance of nine mass housing blocks (21–26, 28–30) in New Belgrade’s Central Zone. These blocks, showcasing diverse structures, provided a robust basis for evaluating the design parameters. ENVI-met simulations were used to assess two scenarios: an “asphalt-only” environment, isolating the urban structure’s impact, and a “real-world” scenario, including green infrastructure (GI). Overall, the findings emphasize that while GI offers mitigation, the inherent urban built structure fundamentally determines thermal outcomes. An urban block’s thermal performance, it turns out, is a complex interplay between morphological factors and local climate. Crucially, simple metrics like Green Area Percentage (GAP) and Building Coverage Ratio (BCR) proved unreliable predictors of thermal performance. This highlights the critical need for urban planning regulations to evolve beyond basic surface indicators and embrace sophisticated, context-sensitive design principles for effective heat mitigation. Optimal performance arises from morphologies that actively manage heat accumulation and facilitate its dissipation, a characteristic exemplified by Block 22’s integrated design. However, even the best-performing Block 22 remains warmer compared to denser central areas, suggesting that urban densification can be a strategy for heat mitigation. Given New Belgrade’s blocks are protected heritage, targeted GI reinforcements remain the only viable approach for improving the outdoor thermal comfort. Full article

To further enhance the economic performance of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), this study develops a model-adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy. This strategy leverages the dynamic relationship between proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) output characteristics and temperature to track its optimal operating temperature (OOT), addressing challenges of temperature control accuracy and high energy consumption in the PEMFC thermal management system (TMS). First, PEMFC and TMS models were developed and experimentally validated. Subsequently, the PEMFC power–temperature coupling curve was experimentally determined under multiple operating conditions to serve as the reference trajectory for TMS multi-objective optimization. For MPC controller design, the TMS model was linearized and discretized, yielding a predictive model adaptable to different load demands for stack temperature across the full operating range. A multi-constrained quadratic cost function was formulated, aiming to minimize the deviation of the PEMFC operating temperature from the OOT while accounting for TMS parasitic power consumption. Finally, simulations under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) conditions evaluated the OOT tracking performance of both PID and MPC control strategies, as well as their impact on stack efficiency and TMS energy consumption at different ambient temperatures. The results indicate that, compared to PID control, MPC reduces temperature tracking error by 33%, decreases fan and pump speed fluctuations by over 24%, and lowers TMS energy consumption by 10%. These improvements enhance PEMFC operational stability and improve FCV energy efficiency. Full article

Effective building operation requires a careful balance between energy conservation and indoor environmental comfort. Although numerous methods have been developed to reduce energy consumption during the operational phase, their objectives and applications vary widely. However, the complexity of building energy management makes it challenging to identify the most suitable methods that simultaneously achieve both comfort and efficiency goals. Existing studies often lack a systematic framework that supports integrated decision-making under comfort constraints. This research aims to address this gap by proposing a decision-making tree for selecting energy conservation methods during building operation with an explicit consideration of indoor environmental comfort. A comprehensive literature review is conducted to identify four main energy-consuming components during building operation: the building envelope, HVAC systems, lighting systems, and plug loads and appliances. Three key comfort indicators—thermal comfort, lighting comfort, and air quality comfort—are defined, and energy conservation methods are categorized into three strategic groups: passive strategies, control optimization strategies, and behavioural intervention strategies. Each method is assessed using a defined set of evaluation criteria. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey is administered for the calibration of the decision tree, incorporating stakeholder preferences and expert judgement. The findings contribute to the advancement of understanding regarding the co-optimization of energy conservation and occupant comfort in building operations. Full article

The Recent Extinction of the Carihuairazo Volcano Glacier in the Ecuadorian Andes Using Multivariate Analysis Techniques

Climate change has accelerated the retreat of Andean glaciers, with significant recent losses in the tropical Andes. This study evaluates the extinction of the Carihuairazo volcano glacier (Ecuador), quantifying its area from 1312.5 m2 in September 2023 to 101.2 m2 in January 2024, its thickness (from 2.5 m to 0.71 m), and its volume (from 2638.85 m3 to 457.18 m3), before its complete deglaciation in February 2024; this rapid melting and its small size classify it as a glacierette. Multivariate analyses (PCA and biclustering) were performed to correlate climatic variables (temperature, solar radiation, precipitation, relative humidity, vapor pressure, and wind) with glacier surface and thickness. The PCA explained 70.26% of the total variance, with Axis 1 (28.01%) associated with extreme thermal conditions (temperatures up to 8.18 °C and radiation up to 16.14 kJ m−2 day−1), which probably drove its disappearance. Likewise, Axis 2 (21.56%) was related to favorable hydric conditions (precipitation between 39 and 94 mm) during the initial phase of glacier monitoring. Biclustering identified three groups of variables: Group 1 (temperature, solar radiation, and vapor pressure) contributed most to deglaciation; Group 2 (precipitation, humidity) apparently benefited initial stability; and Group 3 (wind) played a secondary role. These results, validated through in situ measurements, provide scientific evidence of the disappearance of the Carihuairazo volcano glacier by February 2024. They also corroborate earlier projections that anticipated its extinction by the middle of this decade. The early disappearance of this glacier highlights the vulnerability of small tropical Andean glaciers and underscores the urgent need for water security strategies focused on management, adaptation, and resilience. The reliability of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) energy storage battery systems is critical for ensuring their safe operation and efficient mission execution, and has the potential to significantly advance applications in logistics, monitoring, and emergency response. This paper reviews theoretical and technical advancements in UAV battery reliability, covering definitions and metrics, modeling approaches, state estimation, fault diagnosis, and battery management system (BMS) technologies. Based on international standards, reliability encompasses performance stability, environmental adaptability, and safety redundancy, encompassing metrics such as the capacity retention rate, mean time between failures (MTBF), and thermal runaway warning time. Modeling methods for reliability include mathematical, data-driven, and hybrid models, which are evaluated for accuracy and efficiency under dynamic conditions. State estimation focuses on five key battery parameters and compares neural network, regression, and optimization algorithms in complex flight scenarios. Fault diagnosis involves feature extraction, time-series modeling, and probabilistic inference, with multimodal fusion strategies being proposed for faults like overcharge and thermal runaway. BMS technologies include state monitoring, protection, and optimization, and balancing strategies and the potential of intelligent algorithms are being explored. Challenges in this field include non-unified standards, limited model generalization, and complexity in diagnosing concurrent faults. Future research should prioritize multi-physics-coupled modeling, AI-driven predictive techniques, and cybersecurity to enhance the reliability and intelligence of battery systems in order to support the sustainable development of unmanned systems. Vapor compression refrigeration systems demonstrate stronger alignment with future aircraft thermal management trends, leveraging their superior volumetric cooling capacity, high energy efficiency, and independence from engine bleed air. This paper reviews global research progress on aircraft vapor compression refrigeration systems, covering performance optimization, dynamic characteristics, control strategies, fault detection, and international development histories and typical applications. Analysis identifies emerging challenges under large-temperature-range cooling requirements, with comparative assessment establishing zeotropic mixture auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems as the optimal forward-looking solution. Finally, recognizing current research gaps, we propose future research directions for onboard auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems: optimizing refrigerant mixtures for flight conditions, achieving efficient gas-liquid separation during variable overloads and attitude conditions, and developing model predictive control with intelligent optimization to ensure reliability. Surface Air-Cooled Oil Coolers (SACOCs) can become a critical component in managing the increasing thermal loads of modern turbofan engines. Installed within the bypass duct, SACOCs utilize high-mass flow bypass air for convective heat rejection, reducing reliance on traditional Fuel-Oil Heat Exchangers. This review explores SACOC design principles, integration challenges, aerodynamic impacts, and performance trade-offs. Emphasis is placed on the balance between thermal efficiency and aerodynamic penalties such as pressure drop and flow distortion. Experimental techniques, including wind tunnel testing, are discussed alongside numerical methods, and Conjugate Heat Transfer modeling. Presented studies mostly demonstrate the impact of fin geometry and placement on both heat transfer and drag. Optimization strategies and Additive Manufacturing techniques are also covered. SACOCs are positioned to play a central role in future propulsion systems, especially in ultra-high bypass ratio and hybrid-electric architectures, where traditional cooling strategies are insufficient. This review highlights current advancements, identifies limitations, and outlines research directions to enhance SACOC efficiency in aerospace applications. Full article

The rapid increase in polystyrene (PS) production has led to substantial growth in plastic waste, posing serious environmental and waste management challenges. Current disposal techniques are unsustainable, relying heavily on harsh conditions, high energy input, and generating environmentally harmful byproducts. This review critically discusses alternative green approaches for PS treatment through photocatalytic and non-photocatalytic upcycling methods. Photocatalytic methods utilize light energy (UV, visible, or broad-spectrum irradiation) to initiate radical reactions that cleave the inert carbon backbone of PS. In contrast, non-photocatalytic strategies achieve backbone degradation without direct light activation, often employing catalysts and thermal energy. Both approaches effectively transform PS waste into higher-value compounds, such as benzoic acid and acetophenone, though yields remain moderate for most reported methods. Current limitations, including catalyst performance, low yields, and impurities in real-world PS waste, are highlighted. Future directions toward enhancing the efficiency, selectivity, and scalability of PS upcycling processes are proposed to address the growing plastic waste crisis sustainably. Full article

The efficient thermal management of cutting tools is critical for ensuring dimensional accuracy, surface integrity, and tool longevity, especially in the high-speed dry machining process. However, conventional cooling methods often fall short in reaching the heat-intensive zones near the cutting inserts. This study proposes a novel internal cooling strategy that integrates triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures into the toolholder, aiming to enhance localized heat removal from the cutting region. The thermal-fluidic behaviors of four TPMS topologies (Gyroid, Diamond, I-WP, and Fischer–Koch S) were systematically analyzed under varying coolant velocities using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several key performance indicators, including the convective heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, friction factor, and thermal resistance, were evaluated. The Diamond and Gyroid structures exhibited the most favorable balance between heat transfer enhancement and pressure loss. The experimental validation confirmed the CFD prediction accuracy. The results establish a new design paradigm for integrating TPMS structures into toolholders, offering a promising solution for efficient, compact, and sustainable cooling in advanced cutting applications. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for the largest share of energy consumption in European Union (EU) buildings, representing approximately 40% of the final energy use and contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Latent thermal energy storage (LTES) using phase change materials (PCMs) has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance HVAC efficiency. This review systematically examines the role of latent thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs) in optimizing HVAC performance to align with EU climate targets, including the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). By analyzing advancements in PCM-enhanced HVAC systems across residential and commercial sectors, this study identifies critical pathways for reducing energy demand, enhancing grid flexibility, and accelerating the transition to nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEBs). The review categorizes PCM technologies into organic, inorganic, and eutectic systems, evaluating their integration into thermal storage tanks, airside free cooling units, heat pumps, and building envelopes. Empirical data from case studies demonstrate consistent energy savings of 10–30% and peak load reductions of 20–50%, with Mediterranean climates achieving superior cooling load management through paraffin-based PCMs (melting range: 18–28 °C) compared to continental regions. Policy-driven initiatives, such as Germany’s renewable integration mandates for public buildings, are shown to amplify PCM adoption rates by 40% compared to regions lacking regulatory incentives. Despite these benefits, barriers persist, including fragmented EU standards, life cycle cost uncertainties, and insufficient training. This work bridges critical gaps between PCM research and EU policy implementation, offering a roadmap for scalable deployment. By contextualizing technical improvement within regulatory and economic landscapes, the review provides strategic recommendations to achieve the EU’s 2030 emissions reduction targets and 2050 climate neutrality goals. Graphene oxide (GO) aerogels were discovered as lightweight, highly porous materials with exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. These properties make them suitable for a wide range of advanced applications. This paper discusses GO aerogel synthesis processes, characterization, mechanical properties, applications, and future directions. The synthesis methods discussed include hydrothermal reduction, chemical reduction, crosslinking methods, and 3D printing, with major emphasis on their effects on the aerogel’s structural and functional attributes. A detailed analysis of mechanical characterization techniques is elaborated upon, along with highlighting the effects of parameters such as porosity, crosslinking, and graphene concentration on mechanical strength, elasticity, and stability. Research has been carried out to find GO aerogel applications in various sectors, such as energy storage, environmental remediation, sensors, and thermal management, showcasing their versatility and potential. Additionally, the combination of nanoparticles and doping strategies to improve specific properties is addressed. The review concludes by identifying current challenges in scalability, brittleness, and property optimization and proposes future directions for synthesis innovations. Polyimide, a class of high-performance polymers, is renowned for its exceptional thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. However, in the context of high-integration and high-frequency electronic packaging, polyimides face critical challenges including relatively high dielectric constants, inadequate thermal conductivity, and mechanical brittleness. Recent advances have focused on molecular design and composite engineering strategies to address these limitations. This review first summarizes the intrinsic properties of polyimides, followed by a systematic discussion of chemical synthesis, surface modification approaches, molecular design principles, and composite fabrication methods. We comprehensively examine both conventional polymerization synthetic routes and emerging techniques such as microwave-assisted thermal imidization and chemical vapor deposition. Special emphasis is placed on porous structure engineering via solid-template and liquid-template methods. Three key modification strategies are highlighted: (1) surface modifications for enhanced hydrophobicity, chemical stability, and tribological properties; (2) molecular design for optimized dielectric performance and thermal stability; and (3) composite engineering for developing high-thermal-conductivity materials with improved mechanical strength and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities. The dielectric constant of polyimide is reduced while chemical stability and wear resistance can be enhanced through the introduction of fluorine groups. Ultra-low dielectric constant and high-temperature resistance can be achieved by employing rigid monomers and porous structures. Furthermore, the incorporation of fillers such as graphene and boron nitride can endow the composite materials with high thermal conductivity, excellent EMI shielding efficiency, and improved mechanical properties. Finally, we discuss representative applications of polyimide and composites in electronic device packaging, EMI shielding, and thermal management systems, providing insights into future development directions.
