Geochemical Behaviour of Trace Elements in Diesel Oil-Contaminated Soil During Remediation Assisted by Mineral and Organic Sorbents

The topic of environmental pollution by petroleum products is highly relevant due to rapid urbanisation, including industrial development, road infrastructure and fuel distribution. Potential threat areas include refineries, fuel stations, pipelines, warehouses and transshipment bases, as well as sites affected by accidents or fuel spills. This study aimed to determine whether organic and mineral materials could mitigate the effects of diesel oil pollution on the soil’s trace element content. The used materials were compost, bentonite and calcium oxide. Diesel oil pollution had the most pronounced effect on the levels of Cd, Ni, Fe and Co. The levels of the first three elements increased, while the level of Co decreased by 53%. Lower doses of diesel oil (2.5 and 5 cm3 per kg of soil) induced an increase in the levels of the other trace elements, while higher doses caused a reduction, especially in Cr. All materials applied to the soil (compost, bentonite and calcium oxide) reduced the content of Ni, Cr and Fe. Compost and calcium oxide also increased Co accumulation in the soil. Bentonite had the strongest reducing effect on the Ni and Cr contents of the soil, reducing them by 42% and 53%, respectively. Meanwhile, calcium oxide had the strongest reducing effect on Fe and Co accumulation, reducing it by 12% and 31%, respectively. Inverse relationships were recorded for Cd (mainly bentonite), Pb (especially compost), Cu (mainly compost), Mn (mainly bentonite) and Zn (only compost) content in the soil. At the most contaminated site, the application of bentonite reduced the accumulation of Pb, Zn and Mn in the soil, while the application of compost reduced the accumulation of Cd. Applying various materials, particularly bentonite and compost, limits the content of certain trace elements in the soil. This has a positive impact on reducing the effect of minor diesel oil pollution on soil properties and can promote the proper growth of plant biomass. Full article

The automatic detection of traffic accidents plays an increasingly vital role in advancing intelligent traffic monitoring systems and improving road safety. Leveraging computer vision techniques offers a promising solution, enabling rapid, reliable, and automated identification of accidents, thereby significantly reducing emergency response times. This study proposes an enhanced version of the YOLO11 architecture, termed YOLO11-AMF. The proposed model integrates a Mamba-Like Linear Attention (MLLA) mechanism, an Asymptotic Feature Pyramid Network (AFPN), and a novel Focaler-IoU loss function to optimize traffic accident detection performance under complex and diverse conditions. The MLLA module introduces efficient linear attention to improve contextual representation, while the AFPN adopts an asymptotic feature fusion strategy to enhance the expressiveness of the detection head. The Focaler-IoU further refines bounding box regression for improved localization accuracy. To evaluate the proposed model, a custom dataset of traffic accident images was constructed. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced model achieves precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50–95 scores of 96.5%, 82.9%, 90.0%, and 66.0%, respectively, surpassing the baseline YOLO11n by 6.5%, 6.0%, 6.3%, and 6.3% on these metrics. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed enhancements and suggest the model’s potential for robust and accurate traffic accident detection within real-world conditions. Given the severe global traffic safety challenges—including threats to human lives and socioeconomic impacts—this study analyzes visual behavior to promote sustainable transportation, improve road safety, and reduce resource waste and pollution caused by accidents. Four typical road sections, namely, turning, straight ahead, uphill, and downhill, were selected, and the eye movement data of 23 drivers in different driving stages were collected by aSee Glasses eye-tracking device to analyze the visual gaze characteristics of the drivers and their transfer patterns in each road section. Using Markov chain theory, the probability of staying at each gaze point and the transfer probability distribution between gaze points were investigated. The results of the study showed that drivers’ visual behaviors in different road sections showed significant differences: drivers in the turning section had the largest percentage of fixation on the near front, with a fixation duration and frequency of 29.99% and 28.80%, respectively; the straight ahead section, on the other hand, mainly focused on the right side of the road, with 31.57% of fixation duration and 19.45% of frequency of fixation; on the uphill section, drivers’ fixation duration on the left and right roads was more balanced, with 24.36% of fixation duration on the left side of the road and 25.51% on the right side of the road; drivers on the downhill section looked more frequently at the distance ahead, with a total fixation frequency of 23.20%, while paying higher attention to the right side of the road environment, with a fixation duration of 27.09%. In terms of visual fixation, the fixation shift in the turning road section was mainly concentrated between the near and distant parts of the road ahead and frequently turned to the left and right sides; the straight road section mainly showed a shift between the distant parts of the road ahead and the dashboard; the uphill road section was concentrated on the shift between the near parts of the road ahead and the two sides of the road, while the downhill road section mainly occurred between the distant parts of the road ahead and the rearview mirror. Although drivers’ fixations on the front of the road were most concentrated under the four road sections, with an overall fixation stability probability exceeding 67%, there were significant differences in fixation smoothness between different road sections. Through this study, this paper not only reveals the laws of drivers’ visual behavior under different driving environments but also provides theoretical support for behavior-based traffic safety improvement strategies. Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of injury and death among adolescents, making road safety education crucial. This study assesses the performance of and users’ opinions on the Route 2 School (R2S) traffic safety education program, designed for secondary school students (13–17 years) in Belgium. The program incorporates gamified e-learning modules containing, among others, podcasts, interactive 360° visuals, and virtual reality (VR), to enhance traffic knowledge, situation awareness, risk detection, and risk management. This study was conducted across several cities and municipalities within Belgium. More than 600 students from school years 3 to 6 completed the platform and of these more than 200 students filled in a comprehensive questionnaire providing detailed feedback on platform usability, preferences, and behavioral risk assessments. The results revealed shortcomings in traffic knowledge and skills, particularly among older students. Gender-based analysis indicated no significant performance differences overall, though females performed better in risk management and males in risk detection. Furthermore, students from cities outperformed those from municipalities. Feedback on the R2S platform indicated high usability and engagement, with VR-based simulations receiving the most positive reception. In addition, it was highlighted that secondary school students are high-risk groups for distraction and red-light violations as cyclists and pedestrians. This study demonstrates the importance of gamified, technology-enhanced road safety education while underscoring the need for module-specific improvements and regional customization. The findings support the broader application of e-learning methodologies for sustainable, behavior-oriented traffic safety education targeting adolescents. Full article

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered. Internal combustion engine vehicles damage the environment and public health by emitting toxic fumes, such as CO2 or CO and other trace compounds. The use of electric cars helps to reduce the emission of pollutants into the environment due to the use of batteries with no direct and local emissions. However, accidents of battery electric vehicles pose new challenges, such as thermal runaway. Such accidents can be serious and, in some cases, may result in uncontrolled overheating that causes the battery pack to spontaneously ignite. In particular, the most dangerous vehicles are heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), as they release a large amount of energy that generate high temperatures, poor visibility, and respiratory damage. This study aims to determine the potential consequences of large BEV fires in road tunnels using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Furthermore, a comparison between a BEV and an ICEV fire shows the differences related to the thermal and the toxic impact. Furthermore, the adoption of a longitudinal ventilation system in the tunnel helped to mitigate the BEV fire risk, keeping a safer environment for tunnel users and rescue services through adequate smoke control. This work focuses on the possibilities of generating synthetic data for machine learning in hazard prediction in area-based speed monitoring systems. The purpose of the research conducted was to develop a methodology for generating realistic synthetic data to support the design of a continuous vehicle speed monitoring system to minimize the risk of traffic accidents caused by speeding. The SUMO traffic simulator was used to model driver behavior in the analyzed area and within a given road network. Data from OpenStreetMap and field measurements from over a dozen speed detectors were integrated. Preliminary tests were carried out to record vehicle speeds. Based on these data, several simulation scenarios were run and compared to real-world observations using average speed, the percentage of speed limit violations, root mean square error (RMSE), and percentage compliance. A new metric, the Combined Speed Accuracy Score (CSAS), has been introduced to assess the consistency of simulation results with real-world data. For this study, a basic hazard prediction model was developed using LoRaWAN sensor network data and environmental contextual variables, including time, weather, location, and accident history. The research results in a method for evaluating and selecting the simulation scenario that best represents reality and drivers’ propensities to exceed speed limits. The results and findings demonstrate that it is possible to produce synthetic data with a level of agreement exceeding 90% with real data. Thus, it was shown that it is possible to generate synthetic data for machine learning in hazard prediction for area-based speed control systems using traffic simulators. Full article

In particular, to reduce major accidents and associated casualties, it is essential to provide timely information and prevent incidents through accurate prediction. This paper proposes an artificial intelligence (AI) technology capable of detecting and predicting black ice using multimodal data. The study aims to enable a preemptive response in the field of digital disaster safety and discusses the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach in real-world road environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between visual functions and road traffic accidents (RTAs) by meta-analysis of observational studies. The analysis included all drivers of motor vehicles, regardless of age, and those using private or public transport. Self-reported visual outcomes were excluded. The risk of RTA in patients with reduced visual acuity was observed in commercial drivers in cross-sectional studies (PR 1.54, 95% CI 1.26–1.88), but not in private drivers in cohort (RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.74–1.46) or case–control studies (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.78–1.40). A non-statistically significant association between colour vision defects and RTA was observed in cross-sectional studies (PR 1.50, 95% CI 0.91–2.45). No evidence was found for an increased risk of accidents in people with reduced stereopsis. In older adults with abnormal contrast sensitivity, a weak risk of RTA was observed in cohort studies. Evidence from low-quality cross-sectional studies suggests an increased risk of RTAs among commercial drivers with reduced visual acuity. The few case–control and cohort studies identified did not show an association between accident occurrence and visual function. Attention needs to be paid to this issue to facilitate the conduct of high-quality research that can support the development of road safety policies. Full article

Background: Renal trauma accounts for approximately 3–5% of all trauma cases, predominantly affecting young males. The most common etiology is blunt trauma, particularly due to road traffic accidents, and it frequently occurs as part of polytrauma involving multiple organ systems. Management strategies are primarily dictated by hemodynamic stability, overall clinical condition, comorbidities, and injury severity graded according to the AAST classification. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-operative management (NOM) in high-grade renal trauma (AAST grades III–V), beyond its established role in low-grade injuries (grades I–II). Secondary endpoints included the identification of independent prognostic factors for NOM failure and in-hospital mortality. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study including patients diagnosed with blunt renal trauma who presented to the Emergency Department of Policlinico Umberto I in Rome between 1 January 2013 and 30 April 2024. Collected data comprised demographics, trauma mechanism, vital signs, hemodynamic status (shock index), laboratory tests, blood gas analysis, hematuria, number of transfused RBC units in the first 24 h, AAST renal injury grade, ISS, associated injuries, treatment approach, hospital length of stay, and mortality. Statistical analyses, including multivariable logistic regression, were performed using SPSS v28.0. Results: A total of 244 patients were included. Low-grade injuries (AAST I–II) accounted for 43% (n = 105), while high-grade injuries (AAST III–V) represented 57% (n = 139). All patients with low-grade injuries were managed non-operatively. Among high-grade injuries, 124 patients (89%) were treated with NOM, including observation, angiography ± angioembolization, stenting, or nephrostomy. Only 15 patients (11%) required nephrectomy, primarily due to persistent hemodynamic instability. The overall mortality rate was 13.5% (33 patients) and was more closely associated with the overall injury burden than with renal injury severity. Multivariable analysis identified shock index and active bleeding on CT as independent predictors of NOM failure, whereas ISS and age were significant predictors of in-hospital mortality. Notably, AAST grade did not independently predict either outcome. Conclusions: In line with the current international literature, our study confirms that NOM is the treatment of choice not only for low-grade renal injuries but also for carefully selected hemodynamically stable patients with high-grade trauma. Our findings highlight the critical role of physiological parameters and overall ISS in guiding management decisions and underscore the need for individualized assessment to minimize unnecessary nephrectomies and optimize patient outcomes. (1) Background: The number of casualties due to car accidents in Europe is decreasing. However, there are still very large differences in the levels of road safety between countries, even within the European Union. Therefore, it is vital to conduct reliable international analyses to compare the effectiveness of actions taken to prevent road accidents. Information on the number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities can be found in various databases (e.g., Eurostat or OECD). In this paper, it is clearly shown that data on car accidents and the resulting injuries are not comparable between different countries, and any conclusions drawn using these data as their basis will be erroneous. (2) Methods: The indicators of the number of car accidents, injured people, and fatalities in relation to the number of inhabitants were determined, then their distribution and mutual correlations were examined for a group of selected European countries. (3) Results: There is no correlation between the indicators of the number of car accidents and injuries and the indicator of fatalities. An assessment of road safety based on these indicators would result in inconsistent and ambiguous conclusions. (4) Conclusions: It has been empirically shown that data on the number of car accidents and injured people from different countries are not comparable. These conclusions were verified by providing examples of the definitions of an injured person used in different countries. This paper clearly indicates that any international comparisons can only be made based on data regarding the number of road accident fatalities. Full article

In this research work, the authors propose an approach for analyzing a traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian. The study was conducted under the condition that there are objects in the accident area that limit the visibility of the participants. For this purpose, a three-dimensional simulation model was developed to determine the relative positions of the pedestrian and the motorcycle-driver system at discrete moments, examining the period of time from the moment the pedestrian steps onto the roadway to the moment of contact between the participants. In Italy, the law on road homicide (Law no. 41/2016) introduced specific provisions for drivers who cause severe injuries or death to a person due to the violation of the Highway Code. The use of alcohol or drugs while driving constitutes an aggravating circumstance of the offence and provides for a tightening of penalties. Our study aims to report on the analysis performed on blood samples collected between January 2018 and December 2024 from drivers convicted of road homicide and who tested positive for alcohol and/or drugs. The majority of the involved subjects were males belonging to the 18–30 and 41–50 age groups. Alcohol, cocaine and cannabinoids were the most detected substances and the most frequent polydrug combination was alcohol and cocaine. We also investigated other influencing factors in road traffic accidents as the day of the week and the time of the day in which fatal road traffic accident occurred, and the time elapsed between the road accident and the collection of biological samples. Our data, in line with the international scenario, strongly support that, in addition to the tightening of penalties, raising awareness plays a key role in preventing alcohol- and drug-related traffic accidents by increasing risk perception and encouraging safer driving behaviors. Outcomes of Traumatic Liver Injuries at a Level-One Tertiary Trauma Center in Saudi Arabia: A 10-Year Experience

Traumatic liver injury remains a significant contributor to trauma-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are the predominant mechanism of injury, particularly among young adults. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, management strategies, and outcomes of patients with liver trauma over a ten-year period at a tertiary academic level-one trauma center. A retrospective cohort study was conducted from January 2015 to December 2024. All adult patients (aged 18–65 years) who sustained blunt or penetrating liver injuries and underwent a pan-CT trauma survey were included. Demographic data, Injury Severity Scores (ISSs), imaging timelines, management approach, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using JASP software with a significance threshold set at p < 0.05. A total of 111 patients were included, with a mean age of 33 ± 12.4 years; 78.1% were male. MVAs were the leading cause of injury (75.7%). Most patients (80.2%) had low-grade liver injuries and received non-operative management (NOM), with a high NOM success rate of 94.5%. The median time to CT was 55 ± 64 min, and the mean time to operative or IR intervention was 159.9 ± 78.8 min. Complications occurred in 32.4% of patients, with ventilator-associated pneumonia (19.8%) being most common. The overall mortality was 6.3%. Multivariate analysis revealed that shorter time to CT significantly reduced mortality risk (OR = 0.5, p < 0.05), while a positive e-FAST result was strongly associated with increased mortality (OR = 3.3, p < 0.05). Higher ISSs correlated with longer monitored unit stays (ρ = 0.3, p = 0.0014). Traumatic liver injuries in this cohort were predominantly low-grade and effectively managed conservatively, with favorable outcomes. However, delays in imaging and operative intervention were observed, underscoring the requirement for streamlined trauma workflows. These findings highlight the requirement for continuous trauma system improvement, including protocol optimization and timely access to imaging and surgical intervention. Full article

The inspiration behind this specific research is based on addressing the growing need to improve road safety via the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) system. Although several investigations have discovered the possibility of IoT-based accident recognition, recent research remains fragmented, usually concentrating on outdated science or specific use cases. This study aims to fill that gap by carefully examining and conducting a comparative analysis of 101 peer-reviewed articles published between 2008 and 2025, with a focus on IoT systems for accident recognition techniques. The review categorizes approaches depending on the sensor used, incorporation frameworks, and recognition techniques. The study examines numerous sensors, such as Global System for Mobile Communications/Global Positioning System (GSM/GPS), accelerometers, vibration, and many other superior sensors. The research shows the constraints and advantages of existing techniques, concentrating on the significance of multi-sensor utilization in enhancing recognition precision and dependability. Findings indicate that, although substantial improvements have been made in the use of IoT-based systems for accident recognition, problems such as substantial implementation costs, weather conditions, and data precision issues persist. Moreover, the research acknowledges deficiencies in standardization, as well as the requirement for strong communication systems to enhance the responsiveness of emergency services. As a result, the study suggests a plan for upcoming developments, concentrating on the incorporation of IoT-enabled infrastructure, sensor fusion approaches, and artificial intelligence. This study improves knowledge by offering an extensive viewpoint on IoT-based accident recognition, providing insights for upcoming research, and suggesting policies to facilitate implementation, eventually enhancing worldwide road safety.
