To enhance the reliability of electric propulsion in electric aircraft and address power interruptions caused by current sensor failures, this study proposes a current sensorless fault-tolerant control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. First, a hierarchical architecture is constructed to fuse multi-phase electrical signals in the fault diagnosis layer (sliding mode observer). A symbolic function for the reaching law observer is designed based on Lyapunov theory, in order to generate current predictions for fault diagnosis. Second, when a fault occurs, the system switches to the LSTM reconstruction layer. Finally, gating units are used to model nonlinear dynamics to achieve direct mapping of speed/position to phase current. Verification using a physical prototype shows that the proposed method can complete mode switching within 10 ms after a sensor failure, which is 80% faster than EKF, and its speed error is less than 2.5%, fully meeting the high speed error requirements of electric aircraft propulsion systems (i.e., ≤3%). The current reconstruction RMSE is reduced by more than 50% compared with that of the EKF, which ensures continuous and reliable control while maintaining the stable operation of the motor and realizing rapid switching. The intelligent algorithm and sliding mode control fusion strategy meet the requirements of high real-time performance and provide a highly reliable fault-tolerant scheme for electric aircraft propulsion. Given the harsh working conditions of underwater pan-tilt systems, their energy consumption management is particularly crucial. This study proposes an underwater pan-tilt operation method with an automatic wake-up mechanism, which activates only upon target detection, replacing conventional timer-based triggering. Furthermore, departing from fixed-duration observation strategies, we introduce a Q-learning algorithm to optimize operational modes. The algorithm dynamically adjusts working modes based on surrounding biological activity frequency: employing a low-power mode (reduced energy consumption with lower monitoring intensity) during periods of sparse biological presence and switching to a high-performance mode (extended observation duration, higher energy consumption, and enhanced monitoring intensity) during frequent biological activity. Simulation results demonstrate that compared to fixed-duration observation schemes, the proposed optimization strategy achieves a 11.11% improvement in monitoring effectiveness while achieving 16.21% energy savings. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are widely used in power-conversion applications, including distributed energy storage integration, because of their scalability, high efficiency, and reduced harmonic distortion. Integrating battery storage systems into MMC submodules using dual active bridge (DAB) converters provides electrical isolation and reduces voltage stress, harmonics, and common-mode issues. However, voltage fluctuations due to the battery state of charge can compromise the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation of a DAB and increase the reactive power circulation, leading to higher losses and reduced system performance. To address these challenges, this study investigated an active control strategy for submodule voltage regulation in an MMC with DAB-based battery integration. Assuming single-phase-shift modulation, two control strategies were evaluated. The first strategy regulated the DAB voltage on one side to match the battery voltage on the other, scaled by the high-frequency transformer turns ratio, which facilitated the ZVS operation and reduced the reactive power. The second strategy optimized this voltage to minimize the total power-conversion losses. The proposed control strategies improved the efficiency, particularly at low power levels, achieving several percentage points of improvement compared to maintaining a constant voltage. Full article

Dynamic wireless charging systems have emerged as a promising solution to extend the driving range of electric vehicles by enabling energy transfer while the vehicle is in motion. However, the segment-based charging lane structure introduces challenges such as pulsation of the output power and the need for precise switching control of the transmitting segments. This paper proposes a position-sensorless control method for managing transmitting lines in a dynamic wireless charging system. The proposed approach uses a segmented charging lane structure combined with two receiving coils and LCC compensation circuits on both the transmitting and receiving sides. Based on theoretical analysis, the study determines the optimal switching positions and signals to reduce the current fluctuation. To validate the proposed method, a dynamic wireless charging system prototype with a power rating of 3kW was designed, constructed, and tested in a laboratory environment. The results demonstrate that the proposed position-sensorless control method effectively mitigates power fluctuations and enhances the stability and efficiency of the wireless charging process. Deep drilling and horizontal wells, as important means of unconventional oil and gas development, face problems with the high energy consumption but low removal efficiency of traditional well washing equipment, the uneven cleaning of horizontal well intervals, and an insufficient degree of automation. This paper proposes a novel hydraulic drive well washing device which consists of two main units. The wellbore cleaning unit comprises a hydraulic drive cutting–flushing module, a well cleaning mode-switching module, and a filter storage module. The unit uses hydraulic and mechanical forces to perform combined cleaning to prevent mud and sand from settling. By controlling the flow direction of the well washing fluid, it can directly switch between normal and reverse washing modes in the downhole area, and at the same time, it can control the working state of corresponding modules. The assembly control unit includes the chain lifting module and the arm assembly module, which can lift and move the device through the chain structure, allow for the rapid assembly of equipment through the use of a mechanical arm, and protect the reliability of equipment through the use of a centering structure. The device converts some of the hydraulic power into mechanical force, effectively improving cleaning and plugging removal efficiency, prolonging the downhole continuous working time of equipment, reducing manual operation requirements, and comprehensively improving cleaning efficiency and energy utilization efficiency. Real-time wildlife monitoring on edge devices poses significant challenges due to limited power, constrained bandwidth, and unreliable connectivity, especially in remote natural habitats. Conventional object detection systems often transmit redundant data of the same animals detected across multiple consecutive frames as a part of a single event, resulting in increased power consumption and inefficient bandwidth usage. Furthermore, maintaining consistent animal identities in the wild is difficult due to occlusions, variable lighting, and complex environments. In this study, we propose a lightweight hybrid tracking framework built on the YOLOv8m deep neural network, combining motion-based Kalman filtering with Local Binary Pattern (LBP) similarity for appearance-based re-identification using texture and color features. To handle ambiguous cases, we further incorporate Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) color space similarity. This approach enhances identity consistency across frames while reducing redundant transmissions. The framework is optimized for real-time deployment on edge platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano and Raspberry Pi 5. We evaluate our method against state-of-the-art trackers using event-based metrics such as MOTA, HOTA, and IDF1, with a focus on detected animals occlusion handling, trajectory analysis, and counting during both day and night. Our approach significantly enhances tracking robustness, reduces ID switches, and provides more accurate detection and counting compared to existing methods. When transmitting time-series data and detected frames, it achieves up to 99.87% bandwidth savings and 99.67% power reduction, making it highly suitable for edge-based wildlife monitoring in resource-constrained environments. With their superior switching speed, GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) enable high power density, reduce energy losses, and increase power efficiency in a wide range of applications, such as power electronics, due to their high breakdown voltage. GaN-HEMT devices are subject to long-term reliability due to the self-heating effect and lattice mismatch between the SiC substrate and the GaN. Depletion-mode GaN HEMTs are utilized for radio frequency applications, and this work investigates three wide-bandgap (WBG) GaN HEMT fixed-frequency oscillators with output buffers. The first GaN-on-SiC HEMT oscillator consists of an HEMT amplifier with an LC feedback network. With the supply voltage of 0.8 V, the single-ended GaN oscillator can generate a signal at 8.85 GHz, and it also supplies output power of 2.4 dBm with a buffer supply of 3.0 V. At 1 MHz frequency offset from the carrier, the phase noise is −124.8 dBc/Hz, and the figure of merit (FOM) of the oscillator is −199.8 dBc/Hz. After the previous study, the hot-carrier stressed RF performance of the GaN oscillator is studied, and the oscillator was subject to a drain supply of 8 V for a stressing step time equal to 30 min and measured at the supply voltage of 0.8 V after the step operation for performance benchmark. Stress study indicates the power oscillator with buffer is a good structure for a reliable structure by operating the oscillator core at low supply and the buffer at high supply. The second balanced oscillator can generate a differential signal. The feedback filter consists of a left-handed transmission-line LC network by cascading three unit cells. At a 1 MHz frequency offset from the carrier of 3.818 GHz, the phase noise is −131.73 dBc/Hz, and the FOM of the 2nd oscillator is −188.4 dBc/Hz. High supply voltage operation shows phase noise degradation. The third GaN cross-coupled VCO uses 8-shaped inductors. The VCO uses a pair of drain inductors to improve the Q-factor of the LC tank, and it uses 8-shaped inductors for magnetic coupling noise suppression. At the VCO-core supply of 1.3 V and high buffer supply, the FOM at 6.397 GHz is −190.09 dBc/Hz. This work enhances the design techniques for reliable GaN HEMT oscillators and knowledge to design high-performance circuits. Full article

The stable operation of micromachine systems relies on reliable power management, where DC-DC converters provide energy with high efficiency to extend operational endurance. However, these converters also constitute significant electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources that may interfere with the normal functioning of micro-electromechanical systems. This paper proposes a boost converter utilizing Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) with peak current mode control to address the EMI issues inherent in the switching operation of DC-DC converters. The converter incorporates a Hybrid Spread Spectrum (HSS) technique to effectively mitigate EMI noise. The HSS combines a 1.2 MHz pseudo-random spread spectrum with a 9.4 kHz triangular periodic spread spectrum. At a standard switching frequency of 2 MHz, the spread spectrum range is set to ±7.8%. Simulations conducted using a 0.5 μm Bipolar Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Double-diffused Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (BCD) process demonstrate that the HSS technique reduces EMI around the switching frequency by 12.29 dBμV, while the converter’s efficiency decreases by less than 1%. Green hydrogen will play a crucial role in the future of emission reduction in air traffic in the long-term, as it will completely eliminate CO2 emissions and significantly reduce other pollutants such as contrails and nitrogen oxides. Hydrogen offers a promising alternative to kerosene for short- and medium-haul flights, particularly through direct combustion and hydrogen fuel cell technology in new aircraft concepts. Against the background of the immense capital-intensive infrastructure adjustments that are required at airports for this purpose and the simultaneously high future hydrogen demand for the shipping industry, this paper analyses the emission savings potential in Europe if airports near seaports would switch to hydrogen-powered flight connections. The non-uniform thermal distribution in the active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) topology causes significant thermal gradients during high-power operation, restricting its use in large-capacity power conversion systems like variable-speed pumped storage. This study introduces a novel hybrid fundamental frequency modulation strategy. Through a dynamic allocation mechanism based on a reference signal, this strategy alternates inner and outer power switches at the fundamental frequency, ensuring balanced switching frequency across devices. Consequently, it effectively mitigates the inherent loss imbalance in conventional ANPC topologies. Quantitative analysis using a power device loss model shows that, compared to conventional carrier phase-shift modulation, the proposed method reduces total system losses by 39.98% and improves the loss-balancing index by 18.27% over inner-switch fundamental frequency modulation. A multidimensional validation framework, including an MW-level hardware platform, numerical simulations, and test data, was established. The results confirm the proposed strategy’s effectiveness in improving power device thermal balance. Full article

The totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) circuit based on the triangular current mode (TCM) in the front-end PFC of a switching power supply has the advantage of realizing zero-voltage switching (ZVS) in the full working range. However, the TCM control based on the critical conduction mode (CRM) further increases the inductance current ripple, and the traditional input voltage AC sampling circuit increases the circuit complexity and device cost. Therefore, this paper studies the corresponding improvement technology from two dimensions. Firstly, the coordinated interleaved parallel technology is employed to design the system’s overall control-improvement strategy. This approach not only achieves full working-range ZVS but also reduces both the inductor current ripple and power device stress. Simultaneously, an optimized input voltage sampling circuit is designed to accommodate varying voltage requirements of control chip pins. This circuit demonstrates strong synchronization in both voltage and phase sampling, and the structural characteristics of the optocoupler can also suppress electrical signal interference. Finally, a 600 W totem-pole bridgeless PFC prototype is developed. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed improved method. The prototype efficiency peak reaches 97.3%. The four-level nested neutral point clamped (4L-NNPC) inverter has recently become a promising solution for renewable energy generation, e.g., wind and photovoltaic power. The NNPC inverter can stabilize the flying capacitor (FC) voltages of each bridge through redundant switch states (RSSs). This paper presents an improved three-layer sequential model predictive control (3LS-MPC) method for 4L-NNPCs. This method eliminates weighting factors and removes the switch states that generate high common-mode voltage (CMV). Before selecting the optimal vector, we disable certain switch states which affect the FC voltages, continuing to deviate from the desired value. Then, adopting a two-stage optimal vector selection method, we select the optimal sector based on six specific vectors and choose the optimal vector from the seven vectors in the optimal sector. The feasibility of this method was verified in Matlab/Simulink and the prototype. The experimental results show that compared with classical FCS-MPC, the proposed 3LS-MPC method reduces the common-mode voltage and has better harmonic quality and more stable FCs voltages. Conventional space vector pulse width modulation (CSVPWM) with the fixed switching frequency generates significant sideband harmonics in the three-phase voltage. Discrete random switching frequency SVPWM (DRSF-SVPWM) methods have been widely applied in motor control systems for the suppression of tone harmonic energy. To further reduce the amplitude of the high-frequency harmonic with a limited switching frequency variation range, this paper proposes a time-division subbands beta distribution random SVPWM (TSBDR-SVPWM) method. The overall frequency band of the switching frequency is equally divided into N subbands, and each fundamental cycle of the line voltage is segmented into 2*(N-1) equal time intervals. Additionally, within each time segment, the switching frequency is randomly selected from the corresponding subband and follows the optimal discrete beta distribution. The switching frequency harmonic energy in the line voltage spectrum spreads across multiple frequency subbands and discrete frequency components, thereby forming a more uniform power spectrum of the line voltage. Both simulation and experimental results validate that, compared with CSVPWM, the sideband harmonic amplitude is reduced by more than 8.5 dB across the entire range of speed and torque conditions in the TSBDR-SVPWM. Furthermore, with the same variation range of the switching frequency, the proposed method achieves the lowest switching frequency harmonic amplitude and flattest line voltage spectrum compared with several state-of-the-art random modulation methods. This paper details the development and implementation of an intelligent energy efficiency system for an electrical grid that incorporates renewable energy sources, specifically photovoltaic systems. The system is applied in a small locality of approximately 8000 inhabitants and aims to optimize energy consumption in public institutions by scheduling electrical appliances during periods of surplus PV energy production. The proposed solution employs a hybrid neuro-fuzzy approach combined with scheduling techniques to intelligently shift loads and maximize the use of locally generated green energy. This enables appliances, particularly schedulable and schedulable non-interruptible ones, to operate during peak PV production hours, thereby minimizing reliance on the national grid and improving overall energy efficiency. This directly reduces the cost of electricity consumption from the national grid. Furthermore, a comprehensive power quality analysis covering variables including harmonic distortion and voltage stability is proposed. The results indicate that while photovoltaic systems, being switching devices, can introduce some harmonic distortion, particularly during peak inverter operation or transient operating regimes, and flicker can exceed standard limits during certain periods, the overall voltage quality is maintained if proper inverter controls and grid parameters are adhered to. The system also demonstrates potential for scalability and integration with energy storage systems for enhanced future performance. Full article

The production of β-alanine from fatty acid feedstocks presents a promising synthetic strategy due to its high carbon yield. However, the excessive reducing power generated during fatty acid utilization disrupts cellular redox balance, adversely affecting metabolism and limiting the efficiency and final yield of β-alanine production. To address this challenge, we engineered a co-production system in which excess reducing equivalents generated during fatty acid β-oxidation and β-alanine biosynthesis were consumed by growth-coupled lycopene biosynthesis. The resulting dual-pathway strain, SA01, achieved 44.78 g/L β-alanine and 3.07 g/L lycopene in bioreactor fermentation, representing a 21.45% increase in β-alanine production compared to the β-alanine-producing strain WA01, and a 74.43% increase in lycopene production compared to the lycopene-producing strain LA01. Further optimization in strain SA06, involving cofactor engineering to shift redox flow from NADH to NADPH, enhanced the titers to 52.78 g/L β-alanine and 3.61 g/L lycopene. Metabolite analysis confirmed a decrease in intracellular NADH and FADH2 levels in SA06, indicating restoration of redox balance during the late fermentation phase. Additional improvements in the fermentation process, including gradual carbon source switching, optimization of the induction strategy, and fine-tuning of conditions during both growth and bioconversion phases, resulted in further increases in product titers, reaching 72 g/L β-alanine and 6.15 g/L lycopene. This study offers valuable insights into the development of microbial co-production systems, highlighting the critical role of dynamic cofactor and redox balance management, as well as process optimization, in improving production efficiency.
