pH is a critical parameter requiring precise monitoring across scientific, industrial, and biological domains. Fluorescent pH probes offer a powerful alternative to traditional methods (e.g., electrodes, indicators), overcoming limitations in miniaturization, long-term stability, and electromagnetic interference. By utilizing photophysical mechanisms—including intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), photoinduced electron transfer (PET), and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)—these probes enable high-sensitivity, reusable, and biocompatible sensing. This review systematically details recent advances, categorizing probes by operational pH range: strongly acidic (0–3), weakly acidic (3–7), strongly alkaline (>12), weakly alkaline (7–11), near-neutral (6–8), and wide-dynamic range. Innovations such as ratiometric detection, organelle-specific targeting (lysosomes, mitochondria), smartphone colorimetry, and dual-analyte response (e.g., pH + Al3+/CN) are highlighted. Applications span real-time cellular imaging (HeLa cells, zebrafish, mice), food quality assessment, environmental monitoring, and industrial diagnostics (e.g., concrete pH). Persistent challenges include extreme-pH sensing (notably alkalinity), photobleaching, dye leakage, and environmental resilience. Future research should prioritize broadening functional pH ranges, enhancing probe stability, and developing wide-range sensing strategies to advance deployment in commercial and industrial online monitoring platforms. Reducing post-harvest losses of cereal crops is a key challenge for ensuring global food security amid the limited arable land and growing population. This study investigates the effectiveness of electron beam irradiation (5 MeV, ILU-10 accelerator) as a physical decontamination method for various cereal crops cultivated in Kazakhstan. Samples were irradiated at doses ranging from 1 to 5 kGy, and microbiological indicators—including Quantity of Mesophilic Aerobic and Facultative Anaerobic Microorganisms (QMAFAnM), yeasts, and molds—were quantified according to national standards. Experimental results demonstrated an exponential decline in microbial contamination, with a >99% reduction achieved at doses of 4–5 kGy. The modeled inactivation kinetics showed strong agreement with the experimental data: R2 = 0.995 for QMAFAnM and R2 = 0.948 for mold, confirming the reliability of the exponential decay models. Additionally, key quality parameters—including protein content, moisture, and gluten—were evaluated post-irradiation. The results showed that protein levels remained largely stable across all doses, while slight but statistically insignificant fluctuations were observed in moisture and gluten contents. Principal component analysis and scatterplot matrix visualization confirmed clustering patterns related to radiation dose and crop type. The findings substantiate the feasibility of electron beam treatment as a scalable and safe technology for improving the microbiological quality and storage stability of cereal crops. Full article

Vermicomposting is a sustainable biotechnological process that transforms organic waste through the synergistic activity of earthworms, such as Eisenia fetida, and their associated microbiota. This study evaluated bacterial and physicochemical dynamics during the vermicomposting of bovine manure by analyzing the microbial composition of the substrate and the gut of E. fetida at three time points (weeks 0, 6, and 12). The V3–V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced, and microbial diversity was characterized using QIIME2. Significant differences in alpha diversity (observed features, Shannon index, and phylogenetic diversity) and beta diversity indicated active microbial succession. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteriota were the dominant phyla, with abundances varying across habitats and over time. A significant enrichment of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and the genera Chryseolinea, Flavobacterium, and Sphingomonas was observed in the manure treatments. In contrast, Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and the genera Methylobacter, Brevibacillus, Enhygromyxa, and Bacillus, among others, were distinctive of the gut samples and contributed to their dissimilarity from the manure treatments. Simultaneously, the physicochemical parameters indicated progressive substrate stabilization and nutrient enrichment. Notably, the organic matter and total organic carbon contents decreased (from 79.47% to 47.80% and from 46.10% to 27.73%, respectively), whereas the total nitrogen content increased (from 1.70% to 2.23%); these effects reduced the C/N ratio, which is a recognized indicator of maturity, from 27.13 to 12.40. The macronutrient contents also increased, with final values of 1.41% for phosphorus, 1.50% for potassium, 0.89% for magnesium, and 2.81% for calcium. These results demonstrate that vermicomposting modifies microbial communities and enhances substrate quality, supporting its use as a biofertilizer for sustainable agriculture, soil restoration, and agrochemical reduction. Straw returning (ST) significantly improves soil quality and profoundly impacts soil microorganisms. However, the effects of different ST application amounts on the soil bacterial community remain unclear, and more studies on optimal ST application amounts are warranted. This study aimed to investigate the bacterial diversity and composition, as well as physicochemical properties, of soil in a corn field with 5-year ST amounts of 0, 3, 4.5, 5, and 6 t/hm2, respectively. The results indicated that ST significantly reduced soil bulk density and increased soil pH and nutrients. Meanwhile, ST had a significant effect on the bacterial composition, and the bacterial diversity increased significantly after ST. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria increased dramatically, whereas that of Actinobacteria significantly decreased after ST. The amount of ST had threshold effects on soil physicochemical properties and the dominant bacterial phyla. Moreover, the co-occurrence networks indicated that bacterial stability first increased and then decreased with the increase in ST amounts. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations were the main drivers of bacterial diversity, whereas soil pH and total nitrogen concentrations were the main drivers of bacterial composition. This study strengthens the fact that ST amounts have threshold effects on the soil physicochemical properties and soil microorganisms, and ST amounts of 3–5 t/hm2 were appropriate. Full article

Northern Thailand frequently suffers from severe PM2.5 air pollution, especially during the dry season, due to agricultural burning, local emissions, and transboundary haze. Understanding how pollution moves across regions and identifying source–receptor relationships are critical for effective air quality management. This study investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of PM2.5 in northern Thailand. Specifically, it explored how pollution at one monitoring station influenced concentrations at others and revealed the seasonal structure of PM2.5 transmission using network-based analysis. We developed a Python-based framework to analyze daily PM2.5 data from 2022 to 2023, selecting nine representative stations across eight provinces based on spatial clustering and shape-based criteria. Delaunay triangulation was used to define spatial connections among stations, capturing the region’s irregular geography. Cross-correlation and Granger causality were applied to identify time-lagged relationships between stations for each season. Trophic coherence analysis was used to evaluate the hierarchical structure and seasonal stability of the resulting networks. The analysis revealed seasonal patterns of PM2.5 transmission, with certain stations, particularly in Chiang Mai and Lampang, consistently acting as source nodes. Provinces such as Phayao and Phrae were frequently identified as receptors, especially during the winter and rainy seasons. Trophic coherence varied by season, with the winter network showing the highest coherence, indicating a more hierarchical but less stable structure. The rainy season exhibited the lowest coherence, reflecting greater structural stability. PM2.5 spreads through structured, seasonal pathways in northern Thailand. Network patterns vary significantly across seasons, highlighting the need for adaptive air quality strategies. This framework can help identify influential monitoring stations for early warning and support more targeted, season-specific air quality management strategies in northern Thailand. Full article

The rising demand for sustainable protein is driving interest in insects as a raw material for advanced food ingredients. This review collates and critically analyses over 300 studies on the conversion of crickets, mealworms, black soldier flies, and other farmed species into powders, protein isolates, oils, and chitosan-rich fibers with targeted techno-functional roles. This survey maps how thermal pre-treatments, blanch–dry–mill routes, enzymatic hydrolysis, and isoelectric solubilization–precipitation preserve or enhance the water- and oil-holding capacity, emulsification, foaming, and gelation, while also mitigating off-flavors, allergenicity, and microbial risks. A meta-analysis shows insect flours can absorb up to 3.2 g of water g−1, stabilize oil-in-water emulsions for 14 days at 4 °C, and form gels with 180 kPa strength, outperforming or matching eggs, soy, or whey in specific applications. Case studies demonstrate a successful incorporation at 5–15% into bakery, meat analogs and dairy alternatives without sensory penalties, and chitin-derived chitosan films extend the bread shelf life by three days. Comparative life-cycle data indicate 45–80% lower greenhouse gas emissions and land use than equivalent animal-derived ingredients. Collectively, the evidence positions insect-based ingredients as versatile, safe, and climate-smart tools to enhance food quality and sustainability, while outlining research gaps in allergen mitigation, consumer acceptance, and regulatory harmonization. Microorganisms (bacteria and algae) are important components of biological soil crusts, which exhibit crucial functions in promoting plant growth, maintaining soil structure, and improving soil nutrient content. To determine the effects of combined inoculation on the growth of Poa annua and sandy soils, four species of bacteria and algae were isolated and identified from biological soil crusts (during different developmental stages in a karst rocky desertification area). The soil quality was evaluated based on a soil quality index (SQI), growth indicators of Poa annua, soil physicochemical properties, and a stability analysis of aggregates. With the application of nutrient-poor sandy soils as the substrate, different treatment inoculation solutions were inoculated onto Poa annua. The results revealed that bacteria–algal co-inoculation reduces soil acidity, enhances soil nutrient content and aggregate stability, improves soil quality, and protects plant growth. Notably, compared with the single application of bacterial solution and algal solution, the combined application of bacteria–algal solution significantly improves the sandy soil quality. Full article

This research presents a reinforcement learning framework for stable quadruped locomotion using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). We address critical challenges in articulated robot control—including mechanical complexity and trajectory instability by implementing a 12-degree-of-freedom model in PyBullet simulation. Our approach features three key innovations: (1) a hybrid reward function (Rt=0.72 · eΔCoGt + 0.25 · vt  0.11 · τt) explicitly prioritizing center-of-gravity (CoG) stabilization; (2) rigorous benchmarking demonstrating Adam’s superiority over SGD for policy convergence (68% lower reward variance); and (3) a four-metric evaluation protocol quantifying locomotion quality through reward progression, CoG deviation, policy loss, and KL-divergence penalties. Experimental results confirm an 87.5% reduction in vertical CoG oscillation (from 2.0″ to 0.25″) across 1 million training steps. Policy optimization achieved −6.2 × 10−4 loss with KL penalties converging to 0.13, indicating stable gait generation. The framework’s efficacy is further validated by consistent CoG stabilization during deployment, demonstrating potential for real-world applications requiring robust terrain adaptation. Full article

Linseed, Walnut, and Algal Oil Emulsion Gels as Fat Replacers in Chicken Frankfurters: Effects on Composition, Lipid Profile and Sensory Quality

The replacement of animal fat with unsaturated lipid sources in processed meats enhances nutritional value but introduces challenges regarding oxidative stability and sensory acceptability. In this study, the effects of replacing pork back fat with pre-emulsified walnut, linseed, or algal oils on the proximate composition, fatty acid profile, nutritional indices, lipid oxidation, and sensory properties of chicken frankfurters were investigated. Four formulations were prepared: a control group (25% pork fat) and three groups that were completely reformulated using oil emulsions (ratio inulin/water/oil 1:2:1). The fat substitute significantly reduced total fat, SFA, cholesterol (up to 30%), and calorie density, while Ʃn-3 fatty acids were enriched (p < 0.05). The linseed oil samples had the highest levels of α-linolenic acid (47.53%), while the algal oil had the highest levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (10.98%) and docosahexaenoic acid (64.73%) and the most favourable Ʃn-6/Ʃn-3 ratio (p < 0.05). All reformulated groups showed significantly improved atherogenic and thrombogenic indices and increased hypocholesterolaemic/hypercholesterolaemic ratios, which reached 17.43 in the algal oil samples (p < 0.05). Lipid oxidation was increased in the linseed and algal oil treatments, with the walnut oil group showing moderate TBARS levels and minimal accumulation of secondary oxidation products. Principal component analysis revealed that walnut oil offered the most balanced compromise between nutritional improvement, oxidative stability and sensory acceptability. These findings support a healthier reformulation of meat products by identifying oil-based fat substitutes that improve nutritional value without compromising sensory quality, which is beneficial for both research and industry. Cereal-based plant beverages have gained attention as functional ingredients in bakery formulations, offering both nutritional and technological benefits. Replacing water with these beverages may improve the nutritional value of bread by increasing its fiber and unsaturated fatty acid content, while also introducing functional components that affect dough rheology and bread texture. This study examined the effects of substituting water with oat (BO), millet (BM), and spelt (BS) beverages in wheat bread formulations at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% levels. Thirteen bread variants were prepared: one control and four substitution levels for each of the three cereal-based beverages, using the straight dough method, with hydration adjusted according to farinograph results. Farinograph tests showed increased water absorption (up to 64.5% in BO100 vs. 56.9% in control) and improved dough stability (10.6 min in BS100). Specific bread volume increased, with BS75 reaching 3.52 cm3/g compared to 3.09 cm3/g in control. Moisture content remained stable during storage, and crumb hardness after 72 h was lowest in BO100 (9.5 N) and BS75 (11.5 N), indicating delayed staling. All bread variants received favorable sensory ratings, with average scores above 3.75 on a 5-point scale. The highest bread yield (149.8%) and lowest baking loss (10.9%) were noted for BS100. Although BO breads had slightly higher fat and energy content, their nutritional profile remained favorable due to unsaturated fatty acids. Overall, oat and spelt beverages demonstrated the greatest potential as functional water substitutes, improving dough handling, shelf-life, and sensory quality while maintaining consumer appeal. Functional flours, high in bioactive compounds, have garnered increasing attention, driven by consumer demand for alternative ingredients and the nutritional limitations of wheat flour. This study explores the thermal stability of phenolic compounds in various functional flours using visible, near and shortwave-infrared (Vis–NIR–SWIR) spectroscopy (350–2500 nm), integrated with machine learning (ML) algorithms. Random Forest models were employed to classify samples based on flour type, baking temperature, and phenolic concentration. The full spectral range yielded high classification accuracy (0.98, 0.98, and 0.99, respectively), and an explainability framework revealed the wavelengths most relevant for each class. To address concerns regarding color as a confounding factor, a targeted spectral refinement was implemented by sequentially excluding the visible region. Models trained on the 1000–2500 nm and 1400–2500 nm ranges showed minor reductions in accuracy, suggesting that classification is not solely driven by visible characteristics. Results indicated that legume and wheat flours retain higher total phenolic content (TPC) under mild thermal conditions, whereas grape seed flour (GSF) and olive stone flour (OSF) exhibited notable thermal stability of TPC even at elevated temperatures. These first findings suggest that the proposed non-destructive spectroscopic approach enables rapid classification and quality assessment of functional flours, supporting future applications in precision food formulation and quality control. We investigated the spatial structure and colony itinerancy of Audouin’s gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii) adult breeders across multiple breeding sites in the central Mediterranean Sea during 25 years of fieldwork. Using cluster analysis of marked individuals from different years and sites, we identified five spatial breeding units of increasing hierarchical scale—Breeding Sites, Colonies, Districts, Regions and Marine Sectors—which reflect biologically meaningful boundaries beyond simple geographic proximity. To determine the most appropriate scale for monitoring local populations, we applied multievent capture–recapture models and examined variation in survival and site fidelity across these units. Audouin’s gulls frequently change their location at the Breeding Site and Colony levels from one year to another, without apparent survival costs. In contrast, dispersal beyond Districts boundaries was found to be rare and associated with reduced survival rates, indicating that breeding Districts represent the most relevant biological unit for identifying local populations. The survival disadvantage observed in individuals leaving their District likely reflects increased extrinsic mortality in unfamiliar environments and the selective dispersal of lower-quality individuals. Within breeding Districts, birds may benefit from local knowledge and social information, supporting demographic stability and higher fitness. Our findings highlight the value of adopting a District-based framework for long-term monitoring and conservation of this endangered species. At this scale, demographic trends such as population growth or decline emerge more clearly than when assessed at the level of singular colonies. This approach can enhance our understanding of population dynamics in other mobile species and support more effective conservation strategies aligned with natural population structure. Full article

Natural Fiber-Reinforced Foamed Rubber Composites: A Sustainable Approach to Achieving Lightweight and Structural Stability in Sole Materials

Lightweightness and durability are key consumer demands for footwear. To address the issues of deformation and poor durability in foamed sole materials, this study integrates natural fibers into the formulation of foamed rubber. The effects of natural fiber incorporation on density, mechanical properties, creep behavior, anti-slip performance, and aging resistance were comprehensively analyzed. Additionally, the study explored the mechanisms underlying the improved performance of the modified rubber materials. The results revealed that natural fiber integration significantly enhanced the structural stability, strength, and aging resistance of natural rubber (NR). Among the fibers compared, collagen fibers (CF) proved to be the most effective modifier for foamed NR. The density, tensile strength, tear strength, and coefficient of friction of CF-modified foamed NR (CF-NR) were found to be 0.72 g/cm3, 10.1 MPa, 48.0 N/mm, and 1.105, respectively, meeting the standard requirements for sole materials. Furthermore, CF-NR demonstrated a recoverable deformation of 4.58% and a negligible irreversible deformation of 0.10%, indicating a successful balance between comfort and durability. This performance enhancement can be attributed to the supportive role of CF in the pore structure, along with its inherent flexibility and recoverability. This work presents a novel approach for the development of high-quality, lightweight footwear in the sole material industry. Full article

This current review examines modeling approaches for renovating reinforced concrete (RC) buildings for vertical forest (VF) application, taking into account structural retrofitting, energy systems, forestry integration, and occupant comfort. The study assesses research conducted with an advanced 3D finite element analysis and the use of retrofitting modeling techniques, including textile-reinforced mortar (TRM), fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), seismic joints, and green concrete applications. The energy system modeling methods are reviewed, taking into account the complexity of incorporating vegetation and seasonal variations. During forestry integration, three main design parameters are identified, namely, root systems, trunks, and crowns, for their critical role in the structural stability and optimal environmental performance. The comfort models are identified evolving from static to adaptive models incorporating thermal, acoustic, visual and air quality parameters. The current review consists of more than one hundred studies indicating that the integration of natural systems to buildings requires a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach with sophisticated systems. The findings of this review provide the basis for implementing VF models to RC buildings, while highlighting areas requiring further research and validation. Full article

Point cloud denoising is essential for improving 3D data quality, yet traditional K-means methods relying on Euclidean distance struggle with non-uniform noise. This paper proposes a K-means algorithm leveraging Total Bregman Divergence (TBD) to better model geometric structures on manifolds, enhancing robustness against noise. Specifically, TBDs—Total Logarithm, Exponential, and Inverse Divergences—are defined on symmetric positive-definite matrices, each tailored to capture distinct local geometries. Theoretical analysis demonstrates the bounded sensitivity of TBD-induced means to outliers via influence functions, while anisotropy indices quantify structural variations. Numerical experiments validate the method’s superiority over Euclidean-based approaches, showing effective noise separation and improved stability. This work bridges geometric insights with practical clustering, offering a robust framework for point cloud preprocessing in vision and robotics applications. Full article
