Expandable polystyrene (EPS) nozzle covers can be used to replace traditional metal nozzle covers due to their excellent mechanical properties, as well as being lightweight and ablatable. As an important part of the solid rocket motor, the nozzle cover needs to be designed according to the requirements of the overall system. This study lays a theoretical foundation for the engineering design and performance optimization of the EPS nozzle cover. In this paper, the method of combining test research and numerical simulation is used to explore the pressure bearing capacity of EPS nozzle covers with different thicknesses under linear load. Firstly, the quasi-static tensile, compression and shear tests of EPS materials were carried out by universal testing machine, and the key parameters such as stress-strain curve, elastic modulus and yield strength were obtained; Based on the experimental data, the constitutive model of EPS material with respect to density is fitted and modified; The VUMAT subroutine of the material was written in Fortran language, and the mechanical properties of the nozzle cover with different material model distribution schemes and different thicknesses were explored by ABAQUS finite element numerical simulation technology. The results indicate that the EPS nozzle cover design based on the two material model allocation schemes better aligns with practical conditions; when the end thickness of the EPS nozzle cover exceeds 3 mm, the opening pressure formula for the cover based on the pure shear theory of thin-walled circular plates becomes inapplicable; the EPS nozzle cover exhibits excellent pressure-bearing capacity and performance, with its pressure-bearing capacity showing a positive correlation with its end thickness, and an EPS nozzle cover with a 9 mm end thickness can withstand a pressure of 7.58 MPa (under internal pressure conditions); the pressure-bearing capacity of the EPS nozzle cover under internal pressure conditions is higher than under external pressure conditions, and when the end pressure-bearing surface thickness increases to 9 mm, the internal pressure-bearing capacity is 3.13 MPa higher than under external pressure conditions. Understanding the intrinsic relationship between microscopic structures and macroscopic mechanical properties of rock under freeze–thaw (F-T) conditions is essential for ensuring the safety and stability of geotechnical engineering in cold regions. In this study, a series of F-T cycle tests, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, and uniaxial compression tests were conducted on sandstone samples. The mechanisms by which F-T cycles influence pore structure and mechanical behavior were analyzed, revealing their internal correlation. A degradation model for peak strength was developed using mesopore porosity as the key influencing parameter. The results showed that with increasing F-T cycles, the total porosity and mesopore and macropore porosities all exhibited increasing trends, whereas the micropore and different fractal dimensions decreased. The compaction stage in the stress–strain curves became increasingly prominent with more F-T cycles. Meanwhile, the peak strength and secant modulus decreased, while the peak strain increased. When the frost heave pressure induced by water–ice phase transitions exceeded the ultimate bearing capacity of pore walls, smaller pores progressively evolved into larger ones, leading to an increase in the mesopores and macropores. Notably, mesopores and macropores demonstrated significant fractal characteristics. The transformation in pore size disrupted the power-law distribution of pore radii and reduced fractal dimensions. A strong correlation was observed between peak strength and both the mesopore and mesopore fractal dimensions. The increase in mesopores and macropores enhanced the compaction stage of the stress–strain curve. Moreover, the expansion and interconnection of mesopores under loading conditions degraded the deformation resistance and load-bearing capacity, thereby reducing both the secant modulus and peak strength. The degradation model for peak strength, developed based on changes in mesopore ratio, proved effective for evaluating the mechanical strength when subjected to different numbers of F-T cycles. The increasing application of plain bearings in various industries, especially under challenging conditions like thin lubricating films and high temperatures, necessitates effective monitoring to prevent failures and ensure reliable performance. While sensor-based monitoring incurs significant costs and complex installation due to physical sensors and data acquisition systems, model-based tracking offers a more cost-effective alternative. Model-based monitoring relies on mathematical or physics-based models to estimate system behaviour, reducing the need for extensive sensor data. However, reliable results depend on real-time capable and precise simulation models. Conventional real-time modelling techniques, including analytical calculations, empirical formulas, and data-driven methods, exhibit significant limitations in real-world applications. Analytical methods often have a restricted range of applicability and do not match the accuracy of numerical methods. Meanwhile, data-driven approaches rely heavily on the quality and quantity of training data and are inherently constrained to their training domain. Recently, Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have emerged as a promising solution for model-based monitoring to capture complex system behaviour. This approach combines physical modelling with data-driven learning, allowing for better generalisation beyond the training domain while reducing reliance on extensive data. Thus, this study presents an approach for load monitoring in radial plain bearings using PINNs. It extends the application of PINNs by relying solely on simple sensor inputs, such as radial load and rotational speed, to predict the hydrodynamic pressure and oil film thickness distribution under varying stationary conditions. The real-time model is trained, validated, and evaluated within and beyond the training domain using elastohydrodynamic simulation results. The developed real-time model enables load monitoring in plain bearings by identifying critical hydrodynamic pressure and oil film thickness values using readily available speed and load sensor data under varying stationary conditions. To address the critical challenge of ensuring bottom water-inrush stability during the excavation of ultra-deep foundation pits for riverside suspension-bridge anchorages under complex geological conditions involving high-pressure confined groundwater, we investigate the application of D-RJP high-pressure rotary jet grouting pile technology for ground improvement. Its effectiveness is systematically validated through a case study of the South Anchorage Foundation Pit for the North Channel Bridge of the Zhangjinggao Yangtze River Bridge. The D-RJP method led to the successful construction of a composite foundation within the soft soil that satisfies the permeability coefficient, interface friction coefficient, bearing capacity, and shear strength requirements, significantly improving the geotechnical performance of the anchorage foundation. A series of field experiments were conducted to optimize the critical construction parameters, including the lifting speed, water–cement ratio, and stroke spacing. Core sampling and laboratory testing revealed the grout columns to have good structural integrity. The unconfined compressive strength of the high-pressure jet grout columns reached 5.45 MPa in silty clay layers and 8.21 MPa in silty sand layers. The average permeability coefficient ranged from 1.67 × 10−7 to 2.52 × 10−7 cm/s. The average density of the columns was 1.66 g/cm3 in the silty clay layer and 2.08 g/cm3 in the silty sand layer. The cement content in the return slurry varied between 18% and 27%, with no significant soil squeezing effect observed. The foundation interface friction coefficient ranged from 0.44 to 0.52. After excavation, the composite foundation formed by D-RJP columns was subjected to static load and direct shear testing. The results showed a characteristic bearing capacity value of 1200 kPa, the internal friction angle exceeded 24.23°, and the cohesion exceeded 180 kPa. This study successfully verifies the feasibility of applying D-RJP technology to construct high-performance artificial composite foundations in complex strata characterized by deep soft soils and high-pressure confined groundwater, providing valuable technical references and practical insights for similar ultra-deep foundation pit projects involving suspension bridge anchorages. With coal mines’ mining depth increasing, the stress environment in deep mining (including key factors such as high ground stress, strong disturbance, and complex geological structures, as well as stress redistribution after deformation of surrounding roadway rock) is complex, which leads to increasingly prominent deformation and failure problems for goaf-side roadways in thick coal seams. Surrounding rock deformation is difficult to control, and mine pressure behavior is violent, making traditional support technologies no longer able to meet the mining safety requirements of roadways in deep thick coal seams. Taking the 6311 working face of Tangkou Coal Mine as the engineering research background, this paper systematically summarizes the deformation and failure characteristics of goaf-side roadways in deep thick coal seams through field monitoring, borehole peeping, and other means, and conducts in-depth analysis of their failure mechanisms and influencing factors. Aiming at these problems, a synergistic support–unloading control method for goaf-side roadways is proposed, which integrates roof blasting pressure relief, coal pillar grouting reinforcement, and constant-resistance energy-absorbing anchor cable support. The effects of the unsupported scheme, original support scheme, and synergistic support–unloading control scheme are compared and analyzed through FLAC3D numerical simulation. Further verification through field application shows that it has remarkable effects in controlling roadway convergence deformation, roof separation, and bolt (cable) stress. Specifically, compared with the original support schemes, the horizontal displacement on the coal pillar side is reduced by 89.5% compared with the original support scheme, and the horizontal displacement on the solid coal side is reduced by 79.3%; the vertical displacement on the coal pillar side is reduced by 45.8% and the vertical displacement on the solid coal side is reduced by 42.4%. Compared with the original support scheme, the maximum deformation of the roadway’s solid coal rib, roof, and coal pillar rib is reduced by 76%, 83%, and 88%, respectively, while the separation between the shallow and deep roof remains at a low level. The coal stress continues fluctuating stably during the monitoring period; the force on the bolts (cables) does not exceed the designed anchoring force, with sufficient bearing reserve space (47% remaining), and no breakage occurs, which fully proves the feasibility and effectiveness of the synergistic support–unloading control technology scheme. This technology realizes the effective control of on-site roadways and provides technical reference for the support engineering of coal mine goaf-side roadways under similar conditions. Full article

In situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy (up to 38 GPa) and thermal stability analysis (up to 900 °C) based on Raman and infrared spectroscopy were performed on water-bearing TiO2-II. The samples were synthesized from natural rutile through pressure-induced phase transition experiments. The results demonstrate that at ambient temperature, water-bearing TiO2-II transforms into akaogiite at 12–15 GPa, which is higher than the phase-transition pressure reported in previous studies for anhydrous TiO2-II samples transforming to akaogiite (approximately 10 GPa). Hydroxyl groups at different positions within the TiO2-II structure exhibit distinct thermal stabilities. Although the water-bearing TiO2-II sample underwent partial dehydration between 300 and 400 °C under atmospheric pressure, the majority of the hydroxyl content persisted at higher temperatures (even after the phase transition from TiO2-II to rutile). At ambient pressure, water-bearing TiO2-II transforms to rutile at 500–600 °C, which is significantly lower than the previously reported transition temperature (730 °C) for anhydrous TiO2-II. The partial dehydration of water-bearing TiO2-II during heating may account for the phase transition occurring at a reduced temperature. Full article

Achieving a high load-bearing capacity and fatigue life of joints of composite structures is possible with the use of mechanical fasteners. The aim of this research was to search for effective methods of increasing the load-bearing capacity of mechanical joints of CFRP components. A CFRP composite was made from carbon fabric (KORDCARBON, Czech Republic) using vacuum bag technology. Riveted and bolted joints were evaluated. The pressures exerted on the composite parts during assembly were measured. The values of pressures that cause permanent deformation of the tested composite were estimated. It was shown that the onset of failure of riveted joints is related to the pressures of the shanks of these fasteners on the holes. The load capacity of bolted joints also depends on the pressures of bolt heads on the composite elements. The value of bearing stresses in the pivot-loaded composite was determined. A tomographic study was conducted to determine the damage caused by their interaction. It was shown that the application of a rare-earth adhesive between the threaded bolt shank and the hole results in an increase in the load-bearing capacity of bolted joints by about 10%. A similar increase in strength is observed when the bolt assembly torque is increased. Full article

Lost circulation, a prevalent challenge in drilling engineering, poses significant risks including drilling fluid loss, wellbore instability, and environmental contamination. Conventional plugging materials often exhibit an inadequate performance under high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP), and complex formation conditions. To address that, this study developed a high-performance gel–resin composite plugging material resistant to HTHP environments. By optimizing the formulation of bisphenol-A epoxy resin (20%), hexamethylenetetramine (3%), and hydroxyethyl cellulose (1%), and incorporating fillers such as nano-silica and walnut shell particles, a controllable high-strength plugging system was constructed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the structural stability of the resin, with an initial decomposition temperature of 220 °C and a compressive strength retention of 14.4 MPa after 45 days of aging at 140 °C. Rheological tests revealed shear-thinning behavior (initial viscosity: 300–350 mPa·s), with viscosity increasing marginally to 51 mPa·s after 10 h of stirring at ambient temperature, demonstrating superior pumpability. Experimental results indicated excellent adaptability of the system to drilling fluid contamination (compressive strength: 5.04 MPa at 20% dosage), high salinity (formation water salinity: 166.5 g/L), and elevated temperatures (140 °C). In pressure-bearing plugging tests, the resin achieved a breakthrough pressure of 15.19 MPa in wedge-shaped fractures (inlet: 7 mm/outlet: 5 mm) and a sand-packed tube sealing pressure of 11.25 MPa. Acid solubility tests further demonstrated outstanding degradability, with a 97.69% degradation rate after 24 h in 15% hydrochloric acid at 140 °C. This study provides an efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly solution for mitigating drilling fluid loss in complex formations, exhibiting significant potential for engineering applications. Legged rovers are gaining interest for planetary exploration due to their high mobility. However, loose regolith on celestial surfaces like the Moon and Mars often leads to slippage as legs disturb the soil. To address this, a walking technique has been proposed that enhances soil support by transmitting vibrations from the robot’s legs. This approach aims to improve mobility by increasing the ground’s bearing capacity. To evaluate its effectiveness in space-like environments, this study experimentally investigates the effect of vibration on bearing capacity under low atmospheric pressure, which can influence soil behavior due to reduced air resistance. Using Silica No. 5 and Toyoura sand as test materials, experiments were conducted to compare bearing capacities under standard and low pressure. The results demonstrate that applying vibration significantly improves bearing capacity and that the influence of atmospheric pressure is minimal. These findings support the viability of vibration-assisted locomotion for planetary rovers operating in low-pressure extraterrestrial environments. Full article

The traction behavior in cryogenic solid-lubricated ball bearings (CSLBBs) used in liquid rocket engines (LREs) affects not only the dynamic response of the bearing but also the lubricity and wear characteristics of the solid lubrication coating. The traction coefficient between the ball and raceway depends on factors such as contact material, relative sliding velocity, and contact pressure. However, existing traction curve models for CSLBBs typically consider only one or two of these factors, limiting the accuracy and applicability of theoretical predictions. In this study, a novel traction model for CSLBBs is proposed, which incorporates the combined effects of contact material, relative sliding velocity, and contact pressure. Based on this model, a tribo-dynamic framework is developed to investigate the tribological and dynamic behavior of CSLBBs. The model is validated through both theoretical analysis and experimental data. Results show that the inclusion of solid lubricant effects significantly alters the relative sliding and frictional forces between the rolling elements and the raceway. These changes in turn influence the impact dynamics between the rolling elements and the cage, leading to notable variations in the bearing’s vibrational response. The findings may offer valuable insights for the wear resistance and vibration reduction design of CSLBBs. Full article

The impact mechanism of long-term creep in gas-containing coal on coal and gas outbursts has not been fully elucidated and remains insufficiently understood for the purpose of disaster engineering control. This investigation conducted triaxial creep experiments on raw coal specimens under controlled confining pressures, axial stresses, and gas pressures. Through systematic analysis of coal’s physical responses across different loading conditions, we developed and validated a novel creep damage constitutive model for gas-saturated coal through laboratory data calibration. The key findings reveal three characteristic creep regimes: (1) a decelerating phase dominates under low stress conditions, (2) progressive transitions to combined decelerating–steady-state creep with increasing stress, and (3) triphasic decelerating–steady–accelerating behavior at critical stress levels. Comparative analysis shows that gas-free specimens exhibit lower cumulative strain than the 0.5 MPa gas-saturated counterparts, with gas presence accelerating creep progression and reducing the time to failure. Measured creep rates demonstrate stress-dependent behavior: primary creep progresses at 0.002–0.011%/min, decaying exponentially to secondary creep rates below 0.001%/min. Steady-state creep rates follow a power law relationship when subject to deviatoric stress (R2 = 0.96). Through the integration of Burgers viscoelastic model with the effective stress principle for porous media, we propose an enhanced constitutive model, incorporating gas adsorption-induced dilatational stresses. This advancement provides a theoretical foundation for predicting time-dependent deformation in deep coal reservoirs and informs monitoring strategies concerning gas-bearing strata stability. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding and engineering monitoring of creep behavior in deep coal rocks. Full article

Aerostatic bearings were proven to be an optimal choice in situations where low friction, cleanliness, and high motion accuracy are required. Their functionality relies heavily on flow restrictors, which are responsible for regulating and controlling the supply flow, and consequently, the thickness and stiffness of the fluid film. A diverse range of restrictors with varying characteristics is used, among which are the porous restrictors. The current work introduces a novel solution involving a porous, highly compressible restrictor, whose element of novelty compared to its predecessors consists of its variable thickness and corresponding permeability, regulated by the load on the bearing. The gas is supplied through an annular, elastic, deformable, porous disc, which is compressed by a metal plate, subjected to compression by the recess pressure on one side and by the supply pressure on the other side. One or more springs are used in parallel with the porous disc to obtain the optimum elastic response. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance characteristics and compare them to a conventional restrictor. A parametric analysis is performed to define the size and properties of the porous restrictor. Full article

This paper focuses on the sealing failure problem of double-lip seal rings for high-speed ball bearings used in unmanned aerial vehicles. By using ANSYS 2023R1 software, a thermal–stress–wear coupled finite element model was established. Taking the contact pressure and volume loss due to wear as indicators to evaluate sealing performance, this study analyzed the influence of lip seal structural parameters on sealing performance, performed response surface optimization of the seal structure parameters and conducted a comparative test on lip seals before and after optimization. The research results show that the contact pressure at the main lip of the lip seal was the greatest, which was 0.79 MPa, and the volume loss due to wear lip seal was 7.94 × 10−7 mm3. Optimal sealing performance is achieved when the seal lip inclination angle is 41.68°, the middle width of the lip seal is 0.153 mm, the main lip height is 0.179 mm, the spring center distance is 0.37 mm and the radial interference is 0.0034 mm. After optimization, the grease leakage rate of the sealing ring decreased by 48% compared to before optimization. Full article

The stability of shield tunnel segmental linings is highly sensitive to the lateral pressure coefficient, especially under weak, heterogeneous, and variable geological conditions. However, the mechanical behavior of steel plate-reinforced linings under such conditions remains insufficiently characterized. This study aims to investigate the effects of varying lateral pressures on the structural performance of reinforced tunnel linings. To achieve this, a custom-designed full-circumference loading and unloading self-balancing apparatus was developed for scaled-model testing of shield tunnels. The experimental methodology allowed for precise control of loading paths, enabling the simulation of realistic ground stress states and the assessment of internal force distribution, joint response, and load transfer mechanisms during the elastic stage of the structure. Results reveal that increased lateral pressure enhances the stiffness and bearing capacity of the reinforced lining. The presence and orientation of segment joints, as well as the bonding performance between epoxy resin and expansion bolts at the reinforcement interface, significantly influence stress redistribution in steel plate-reinforced zones. These findings not only deepen the understanding of tunnel behavior in complex geological environments but also offer practical guidance for optimizing reinforcement design and improving the durability and safety of shield tunnels. Anti-Overturning Performance of Prefabricated Foundations for Distribution Line Poles

To enhance the anti-overturning performance of poles and prevent tilting or collapse, a prefabricated foundation for distribution lines is developed. Field tests are conducted on five groups of foundations. Based on the test results, finite element analysis (FEA) is employed to investigate the influence of different factors—such as pole embedment depth, foundation locations, soil type, and soil parameters—on the anti-overturning performance of pole prefabricated foundations. The results indicate that under ultimate load conditions, the reaction force distribution at the base of the foundation approximates a triangular pattern, and the lateral earth pressure on the pole follows an approximately quadratic parabolic distribution along the depth. When the foundation size increases from 0.8 m to 0.9 m, the bearing capacity of the prefabricated foundation improves by 8%. Furthermore, when the load direction changes from 0° to 45°, the foundation’s bearing capacity increases by 14%. When the foundation is buried at a depth of 1.0 m, compared with the ground position, the ultimate overturning moment of the prefabricated foundation increases by 10%. Based on field test results, finite element simulation results, and limit equilibrium theory, a calculation method for the anti-overturning bearing capacity of prefabricated pole foundations is developed, which can provide a practical reference for the engineering design of distribution line poles and their prefabricated foundations.
