The growing demand for sustainable materials has led to increased interest in biodegradable polymer fibers and nonwoven mats due to their eco-friendly characteristics and potential to reduce plastic pollution. This review highlights how mechanical properties influence the performance and suitability of biodegradable polymer fibers across diverse applications. This covers synthetic polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), polycaprolactone (PCL), polyglycolic acid (PGA), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), as well as natural polymers including chitosan, collagen, cellulose, alginate, silk fibroin, and starch-based polymers. A range of fiber production methods is discussed, including electrospinning, centrifugal spinning, spunbonding, melt blowing, melt spinning, and wet spinning, with attention to how each technique influences tensile strength, elongation, and modulus. The review also addresses advances in composite fibers, nanoparticle incorporation, crosslinking methods, and post-processing strategies that improve mechanical behavior. In addition, mechanical testing techniques such as tensile test machine, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis are examined to show how fabrication parameters influence fiber performance. This review examines the mechanical performance of biodegradable polymer fibers and fibrous mats, emphasizing their potential as sustainable alternatives to conventional materials in applications such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, medical implants, wound dressings, packaging, and filtration. To improve the postharvest preservation of cherry tomatoes and combat pathogenic, both bacterial and fungal contamination (particularly Alternaria alternata), a novel biodegradable coating was developed based on a water-in-water (W/W) Pickering emulsion system. The emulsion was stabilized by L. plantarum (Lactobacillus plantarum), with maltodextrin (MD) as the dispersed phase and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as the continuous phase. Characterization of emulsions at varying concentrations revealed that the optimized W/W-PL^8 film exhibited superior stability, smooth morphology, and low water vapor permeability (WVP = 220.437 g/(m2·24 h)), making it a promising candidate for fruit and vegetable preservation. Furthermore, the coating demonstrated strong antioxidant activity, with scavenging rates of 58.99% (ABTS) and 94.23% (DPPH), along with potent antimicrobial effects, showing inhibition rates of 12.8% against Escherichia coli and 23.7% against Staphylococcus aureus. Applied to cherry tomatoes, the W/W-PL^8 coating significantly reduced respiration rates, minimized decay incidence, and maintained nutritional quality during storage. Remarkably, the coating successfully controlled Alternaria alternata contamination, enhancing the storage duration of cherry tomatoes. These findings highlight the potential of W/W-PL^8 as an eco-friendly and functional packaging material for fresh produce preservation. Full article

Automated quality control plays a critical role in modern industries, particularly in environments that handle large volumes of packaged products requiring fast, accurate, and consistent inspections. This work presents an anomaly detection system for candle jars commonly used in industrial and commercial applications, where obtaining labeled defective samples is challenging. Two anomaly detection strategies are explored: (1) a baseline model using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as an end-to-end classifier and (2) a hybrid approach where features extracted by CNNs are fed into One-Class classification (OCC) algorithms, including One-Class SVM (OCSVM), One-Class Isolation Forest (OCIF), One-Class Local Outlier Factor (OCLOF), One-Class Elliptic Envelope (OCEE), One-Class Autoencoder (OCAutoencoder), and Support Vector Data Description (SVDD). Both strategies are trained primarily on non-defective samples, with only a limited number of anomalous examples used for evaluation. Experimental results show that both the pure CNN model and the hybrid methods achieve excellent classification performance. The end-to-end CNN reached 100% accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC. The best-performing hybrid model CNN-based feature extraction followed by OCIF also achieved 100% across all evaluation metrics, confirming the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach. Other OCC algorithms consistently delivered strong results, with all metrics above 95%, indicating solid generalization from predominantly normal data. This approach demonstrates strong potential for quality inspection tasks in scenarios with scarce defective data. Its ability to generalize effectively from mostly normal samples makes it a practical and valuable solution for real-world industrial inspection systems. Future work will focus on optimizing real-time inference and exploring advanced feature extraction techniques to further enhance detection performance. Full article

This paper introduces PyBEP, a Python-based tool for the automated and optimized selection of open-circuit potential (OCP) curves and calculation of stoichiometric cycling ranges for lithium-ion battery electrodes based on open-circuit voltage (OCV) measurements. Thereby, it overcomes key challenges in traditional approaches, which are often time-intensive and susceptible to errors due to manual curve digitization, data inconsistency, and coding complexities. The originality of PyBEP arises from the systematic integration of automated electrode chemistry identification, quality-controlled database usage, refinement of the results using incremental capacity methodology, and simultaneous optimization of multiple electrode parameters. The PyBEP database leverages high-quality, curated OCP data and employs differential evolution optimization for precise OCP determination. Validation against literature data and experimental results confirms the robustness and accuracy of PyBEP, consistently achieving precision of 10 mV or better. PyBEP also offers features like electrode chemical composition identification and quality enhancement of measurement data, further extending the battery modeling functionalities without the need for battery disassembly. PyBEP is open-source and accessible on GitHub, providing a streamlined, accurate resource for the battery research community, making PyBEP a unique and directly applicable toolkit for electrochemical researchers and engineers. Ocean energy is an abundant, eco-friendly, and renewable energy resource that is useful for powering sensor networks connected to the maritime Internet of Things (MIoT). These sensor networks can be used to measure different marine environmental parameters that affect ocean infrastructure integrity and harm marine ecosystems. This ocean energy can be harnessed through hybrid nanogenerators that combine triboelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators, piezoelectric nanogenerators, and pyroelectric generators. These nanogenerators have advantages such as high-power density, robust design, easy operating principle, and cost-effective fabrication. However, the performance of these nanogenerators can be affected by the wear of their main components, reduction of wave frequency and amplitude, extreme corrosion, and sea storms. To address these challenges, future research on hybrid nanogenerators must improve their mechanical strength, including materials and packages with anti-corrosion coatings. Herein, we present recent advances in the performance of different hybrid nanogenerators to harvest ocean energy, including various transduction mechanisms. Furthermore, this review reports potential applications of hybrid nanogenerators to power devices in marine infrastructure or serve as self-powered MIoT monitoring sensor networks. This review discusses key challenges that must be addressed to achieve the commercial success of these nanogenerators, regarding design strategies with advanced simulation models or digital twins. Also, these strategies must incorporate new materials that improve the performance, reliability, and integration of future nanogenerator array systems. Thus, optimized hybrid nanogenerators can represent a promising technology for ocean energy harvesting with application in the maritime industry. Full article

Environmental protection has become one of the key challenges of our time. This has led to an increase in pro-environmental activities in the field of cosmetics and household chemicals, where manufacturers are increasingly trying to meet the expectations of consumers who are aware of the potential risks associated with the production of cosmetics and household chemistry products. This is one of the most important challenges of today’s industry, given that some of the raw materials still commonly used, such as surfactants, may be toxic to aquatic organisms. Many companies are choosing to use natural raw materials that have satisfactory performance properties but are also environmentally friendly. In addition, modern products are also characterized by reduced consumption of water, resources, and energy in production processes. These measures reduce the carbon footprint and reduce the amount of plastic packaging required. In the present study, seven formulations of environmentally friendly car shampoo concentrates were developed, based entirely on mixtures of bio-based surfactants. The developed formulations were tested for application on the car body surface, allowing the selection of the two best products. For these selected formulations, an in-depth physicochemical analysis was carried out, including pH, density, and viscosity measurements. Comparison of the results with commercial products available on the market was also performed. Additionally, using the multiple light scattering method, the foamability and foam stability were determined for the car shampoos developed. The results obtained indicate the very high application potential of the products under study, which combine high performance and environmental concerns. Full article

Lychee (Lychee chinensis Sonn.) is a tropical fruit highly appreciated for its vivid red color, sweet flavor, and nutritional properties. However, it is highly perishable, with postharvest losses often due to oxidative browning and dehydration. This study evaluated the organic olive oil coating (OC), a natural lipidic system with the potential to act as a precursor for organogel development, combined with polyamide/polyethylene (PA/PE) packaging under passive modified atmosphere. Fruits were harvested at commercial maturity and divided into two groups: OC-treated and untreated control (CTR). Both groups were stored at 5 ± 1 °C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity and analyzed on days 0, 3, 6, and 9. The OC-treated fruits showed significantly better retention of physical, chemical, microbiological, and sensory qualities. The coating reduced oxidative stress and enzymatic browning, preserving color and firmness. The PA/PE packaging regulated gas exchange, lowering oxygen levels and delaying respiration and ripening. As a result, OC fruits had lower weight loss, a slower increase in browning index and maturity index, and better visual and sensory scores than the CTR group. This dual strategy proved effective in extending shelf life while maintaining the fruit’s appearance, flavor, and nutritional value. It represents a sustainable and natural approach to enhancing the postharvest stability of lychee. Full article

This study investigated the effect of an apple pectin coating enriched with gamma-decalactone (GDL) on the physicochemical and microbiological quality of strawberries over 9 days of refrigerated storage. Strawberries were coated with pectin solutions containing a plasticizer and emulsifier, with or without GDL, and compared to uncoated controls. The coatings were evaluated for their effects on fruit mass loss, pH, extract content (°Brix), firmness, color parameters (L*, a*, b*, C*, h*, ΔE), and microbial spoilage. The pectin coating limited changes in extract, pH, and color and slowed firmness loss. Notably, GDL-enriched coatings significantly reduced spoilage (14.29% after 9 days vs. 57.14% in the control) despite accelerating pulp softening. Extract content increased the most in the GDL group (from 9.92 to 12.00 °Brix), while mass loss reached up to 22.8%. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) confirmed coating type as a major factor differentiating sample quality over time. These findings demonstrate the potential of bioactive pectin-based coatings to enhance fruit preservation and support the development of active packaging strategies. Further studies should optimize coating composition and control the release kinetics of functional compounds. Full article

Microplastics are pervasive environmental pollutants that pose risks to human health through ingestion and inhalation. This review synthesizes current practices to reduce exposure and toxicity by examining major exposure routes and dietary interventions. More than 130 papers were analyzed to achieve this aim. The findings show that microplastics contaminate a wide range of food products, with particular concern over seafood, drinking water, plastic-packaged foods, paper cups, and tea filter bags. Inhalation exposure is mainly linked to indoor air quality and smoking, while dermal contact poses minimal risk, though the release of additives from plastics onto the skin remains an area of concern. Recommended strategies to reduce dietary exposure include consuming only muscle parts of seafood, moderating intake of high-risk items like anchovies and mollusks, limiting canned seafood liquids, and purging mussels in clean water before consumption. Avoiding plastic containers, especially for hot food or microwaving, using wooden cutting boards, paper tea bags, and opting for tap or filtered water over bottled water are also advised. To mitigate inhalation exposure, the use of air filters with HyperHEPA systems, improved ventilation, regular vacuuming, and the reduction of smoking are recommended. While antioxidant supplementation shows potential in reducing microplastic toxicity, further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness. This review provides practical, evidence-based recommendations for minimizing daily microplastic exposure. Full article

Background: Angiosarcomas (ASs) represent a heterogeneous and highly aggressive subset of tumors that respond poorly to systemic treatments and are associated with short progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The aim of this study was to develop and validate an immune-related prognostic model—termed the AS score—using data from two independent sarcoma cohorts. Methods: A prognostic model was developed using a previously characterized cohort of 25 angiosarcoma samples. Candidate genes were identified via the Maxstat algorithm (Maxstat v0.7-25 for R), combined with log-rank testing. The AS score was then computed by weighing normalized gene expression levels according to Cox regression coefficients. For external validation, transcriptomic data from TCGA Sarcoma cohort (n = 253) were analyzed. The Immunoscore—which reflects the tumor immune microenvironment—was inferred using the ESTIMATE package (v1.0.13) in R. All statistical analyses were performed in RStudio (v 4.0.3). Results: Four genes—IGF1R, MAP2K1, SERPINE1, and TCF12—were ultimately selected to construct the prognostic model. The resulting AS score enabled the classification of angiosarcoma cases into two prognostically distinct groups (p = 0.00012). Cases with high AS score values, which included both cutaneous and non-cutaneous forms, exhibited significantly poorer outcomes, whereas cases with low AS scores were predominantly cutaneous. A significant association was observed between the AS score and the Immunoscore (p = 0.025), with higher Immunoscore values found in high-AS score tumors. Validation using TCGA sarcoma cohort confirmed the prognostic value of both the AS score (p = 0.0066) and the Immunoscore (p = 0.0029), with a strong correlation between their continuous values (p = 2.9 × 10−8). Further survival analysis, integrating categorized scores into four groups, demonstrated robust prognostic significance (p = 0.00021). Notably, in tumors with a low Immunoscore, AS score stratification was not prognostic. In contrast, among cases with a high Immunoscore, the AS score effectively distinguished outcomes (p < 0.0001), identifying a subgroup with poor prognosis but potential sensitivity to immunotherapy. Conclusions: This combined classification using the AS score and Immunoscore has prognostic relevance in sarcoma, suggesting that angiosarcomas with an immunologically active microenvironment (high Immunoscore) and poor prognosis (high AS score) may be prime candidates for immunotherapy and this approach warrants prospective validation. The development of active food packaging has evolved rapidly in recent years, offering innovative solutions to enhance food preservation and safety while addressing sustainability challenges. This review compiles and analyzes recent advancements (2019–2024) in release-type active packaging, focusing on essential oils, natural extracts, and phenolic compounds as active agents. Primarily plant-derived, these compounds exhibit significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, extending shelf life and enhancing food quality. Technological strategies such as encapsulation and polymer blending have been increasingly adopted to overcome challenges related to volatility, solubility, and sensory impact. Integrating bio-based polymers, including chitosan, starch, and polylactic acid, further supports the development of environmentally friendly packaging systems. This review also highlights trends in compound-specific research, release mechanisms, and commercial applications, including a detailed analysis of patents and case studies across various food matrices. These developments have already been translated into practical applications, such as antimicrobial sachets for meat and essential oil-based pads for fresh produce. Moreover, by promoting the valorization of agro-industrial by-products and the use of biodegradable materials, emission-type active packaging contributes to the principles of the circular economy. Structural Features of Nucleoproteins from the Recently Discovered Orthonairovirus songlingense and Norwavirus beijiense

The recent discovery of Orthonairovirus songlingense (SGLV) and Norwavirus beijiense (BJNV) in China has raised significant concern due to their potential to cause severe human disease. However, little is known about the structural features and function of their nucleoproteins, which play a key role in the viral life cycle. By combining small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data and AlphaFold 3 simulations, we reconstructed the BJNV and SGLV nucleoprotein structures for the first time. The SGLV and BJNV nucleoproteins have structures that are broadly similar to those of Orthonairovirus haemorrhagiae (CCHFV) nucleoproteins despite low sequence similarity. Based on structural analysis, several residues located in the positively charged region of BJNV and SGLV nucleoproteins have been indicated to be important for viral RNA binding. A positively charged RNA-binding crevice runs along the interior of the SGLV and BJNV ribonucleoprotein complex (RNP), shielding the viral RNA. Despite the high structural similarity between SGLV and BJNV nucleoprotein monomers, their RNPs adopt distinct conformations. These findings provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms of viral genome packaging and replication in these emerging pathogens. Also, our work demonstrates that experimental SAXS data can validate and improve predicted AlphaFold 3 structures to reflect their solution structure and also provides the first low-resolution structures of the BJNV and SGLV nucleoproteins for the future development of POC tests, vaccines, and antiviral drugs. Gas sensors are considered a highly effective non-destructive technique for monitoring the quality and safety of food materials. These intelligent sensors can detect volatile profiles emitted by food products, providing valuable information on the changes occurring within the food. Gas sensors have garnered significant interest for their numerous advantages in the development of food safety monitoring systems. The adaptable characteristics of gas sensors make them ideal for integration into production lines, while the flexibility of certain sensor types allows for incorporation into packaging materials. Various types of gas sensors have been developed for their distinct properties and are utilized in a wide range of applications. Metal-oxide semiconductors and optical sensors are widely studied for their potential use as gas sensors in food quality assessments due to their ability to provide visual indicators to consumers. The advancement of new nanomaterials and their integration with advanced data acquisition techniques is expected to enhance the performance and utility of sensors in sustainable practices within the food supply chain. In light of pressing global nutritional needs, the valorization of agri-food waste constitutes a vital strategy for enhancing human health and nutrition, while simultaneously supporting planetary health. This integrated approach is increasingly indispensable within sustainable and equitable food systems. Recently, a sustainability-driven focus has shifted attention toward the valorization of the agri-food by-products as rich sources of bioactive compounds useful in preventing or treating chronic diseases. Agri-food by-products, often regarded as waste, actually hold great potential as they are rich in bioactive components, dietary fiber, and other beneficial nutrients from which innovative food ingredients, functional foods, and even therapeutic products are developed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current advances in recovering and applying such compounds from agri-food waste, with a particular focus on their roles in human health, sustainable packaging, and circular economy strategies. Methods: This review critically synthesizes recent scientific literature on the extraction, characterization, and utilization of bioactive molecules from agri-food by-products. After careful analysis of the PubMed and Scopus databases, only English-language articles from the last 10 years were included in the final narrative review. The analysis also encompasses applications in the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and food packaging sectors. Results: Emerging technologies have enabled the efficient and eco-friendly recovery of compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and dietary fibers that demonstrate antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. These bioactive compounds support the development of functional foods and biodegradable packaging materials. Furthermore, these valorization strategies align with global health trends by promoting dietary supplements that counteract the effects of the Western diet and chronic diseases. Conclusions: Valorization of agri-food by-products offers a promising path toward sustainable development by reducing waste, enhancing public health, and driving innovation. This strategy not only minimizes waste and supports sustainability, but also promotes a more nutritious and resilient food system. Full article

In recent years, active packaging has become a focal point of research and development in the food industry, driven by increasing consumer demand for safe, high-quality, and sustainable food products. In this work, solvent casting processed an active antibacterial multicomponent film based on hydroxypropyl methylcellulose incorporated with ferulic acid and chitin nanofibers. The influences of ferulic acid and different content of chitin nanofibers on the structure, thermal, mechanical, and water vapor stability and antioxidant and antibacterial efficiency of films were studied. It was shown that the inclusion of only ferulic acid did not significantly influence the mechanical, water vapor, and thermal stability of films. In addition, films containing only ferulic acid did not display antibacterial activity. The optimal concentration of chitin nanofibers in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose–ferulic acid films was 5 wt%, providing a tensile strength of 15 MPa, plasticity of 52%, and water vapor permeability of 0.94 × 10−9 g/m s Pa. With further increase of chitin nanofibers content, films with layered and discontinuous phases are obtained, which negatively influence tensile strength and water vapor permeability. Moreover, only films containing both ferulic acid and chitin nanofibers demonstrated antibacterial activity toward E. coli and S. aureus, suggesting that the presence of fibers allows easier release of ferulic acid from the matrix. These results imply that the investigated three-component systems have potential applicability as sustainable active food packaging materials. Full article
