In recent decades, the rapid expansion of the food processing industry has led to significant losses and waste, with the fruit and vegetable sector among the most affected. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), losses in this category can reach up to 60%. Vegetable waste includes edible parts discarded during processing, packaging, distribution, and consumption, often comprising by-products rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, dietary fibers, vitamins, and enzymes. The underutilization of these resources constitutes both an economic drawback and an environmental and ethical concern. Current recovery practices, including their use in animal feed or bioenergy production, contribute to a circular economy but are often limited by high operational costs. In this context, fermentation has emerged as a promising, sustainable approach for converting vegetable by-products into value-added food ingredients. This process improves digestibility, reduces undesirable compounds, and introduces probiotics beneficial to human health. The present review examines how fermentation can improve the nutritional, sensory, and functional properties of plant-based foods. By presenting several case studies, it illustrates how fermentation can effectively valorize vegetable processing by-products, supporting the development of novel, health-promoting food products with improved technological qualities. Computer vision is of wide interest to perform the phenotyping of horticultural crops such as apple trees at high throughput. In orchards specially constructed for variety testing or breeding programs, computer vision tools should be able to extract phenotypical information form each tree separately. We focus on segmenting individual apple trees as the main task in this context. Segmenting individual apple trees in dense orchard rows is challenging because of the complexity of outdoor illumination and intertwined branches. Traditional methods rely on supervised learning, which requires a large amount of annotated data. In this study, we explore an alternative approach using prompt engineering with the Segment Anything Model and its variants in a zero-shot setting. Specifically, we first detect the trunk and then position a prompt (five points in a diamond shape) located above the detected trunk to feed to the Segment Anything Model. We evaluate our method on the apple REFPOP, a new large-scale European apple tree dataset and on another publicly available dataset. On these datasets, our trunk detector, which utilizes a trained YOLOv11 model, achieves a good detection rate of 97% based on the prompt located above the detected trunk, achieving a Dice score of 70% without training on the REFPOP dataset and 84% without training on the publicly available dataset.We demonstrate that our method equals or even outperforms purely supervised segmentation approaches or non-prompted foundation models. These results underscore the potential of foundational models guided by well-designed prompts as scalable and annotation-efficient solutions for plant segmentation in complex agricultural environments. Background/Objectives: Hermetia illucens larvae can efficiently convert agri-food residues into high-protein biomass for animal feed and nutrient-rich frass for soil amendment. However, the potential spread of carbapenem resistance genes (CRGs), which confer resistance to last-resort carbapenem antibiotics, and Enterobacteriaceae, common carriers of these genes and opportunistic pathogens, raises important safety concerns. This study aimed to assess the influence of different agri-food-based diets on Enterobacteriaceae loads and the CRG occurrence during the bioconversion process. Methods: Four experimental diets were formulated from agri-food residues and anaerobic digestate: Diet 1 (peas and chickpea waste), Diet 2 (peas and wheat waste), Diet 3 (onion and wheat waste), and Diet 4 (wheat waste and digestate). Enterobacteriaceae were quantified by viable counts, while five CRGs (blaKPC, blaNDM, blaOXA-48, blaVIM, and blaGES) were detected and quantified using quantitative PCRs (qPCRs). Analyses were performed on individual substrates, formulated diets, larvae (before and after bioconversion), and frass. Results: Plant-based diets sustained moderate Enterobacteriaceae loads. In contrast, the digestate-based diet led to a significant increase in Enterobacteriaceae in both the frass and mature larvae. CRGs were detected only in legume-based diets: blaVIM and blaGES were found in both mature larvae and frass, while blaOXA-48 and blaKPC were found exclusively in either larvae or frass. No CRGs were detected in onion- or digestate-based diets nor in young larvae or diet inputs. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the diet composition may influence the proliferation of Enterobacteriaceae and the persistence of CRGs. Careful substrate selection and process monitoring are essential to minimize antimicrobial resistance risks in insect-based bioconversion systems. Full article

Euphorbia hirta L. is traditionally used to treat tumors and has demonstrated anticancer effects. This study evaluated the phytochemical composition, toxicity, and antitumor activity of saline extract (SE) from E. hirta leaves in mice. Phytochemical analysis included thin layer chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, and quantification of phenols, flavonoids, and proteins. Acute toxicity (2000 mg/kg) assessed mortality, hematological, biochemical, histological parameters, water/feed intake, and body weight. Genotoxicity was evaluated via comet and micronucleus assays. Antitumor activity was tested in vitro and in vivo on sarcoma 180. SE contained 107.3 mg GAE/g phenolics and 22.9 mg QE/g flavonoids; the presence of gallic and ellagic acids was detected. Protein concentration was 12.16 mg/mL with lectin activity present. No mortality, organ damage, or genotoxic effects occurred in toxicity tests. SE demonstrated in vitro cytotoxicity against sarcoma cells (IC50: 10 µg/mL). In vivo, SE (50–200 mg/kg) reduced tumor weight by 70.2–72.3%. SE modulated IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17, IFN-γ, and TNF-α in tumor environment. Tumors showed inflammatory infiltrate, necrosis, and fibrosis after treatment. These findings position the extract as a promising candidate for further development as a safe, plant-based antitumor agent. Full article

Small-scale fisheries and aquaculture play a crucial role in securing food, income, and nutrition for millions, especially in the Global South. Rural small-scale aquaculture (SSA) is characterized by limited investment and technical training among farmers, diversification and dispersion of farms over large areas, reduced access to competitive markets for inputs and products, and family labor. Small-scale integrated circular aquaponic (ICAq) systems, in which systems’ component outputs are transformed into component inputs, have significant potential to increase circularity and promote economic development, especially in a rural context. We offer an integrated and comprehensive approach centered on aquaponics or aquaponic farming for small-scale aquaculture units. It aims to identify and describe a series of circular processes and causal links that can be implemented based on deep study in SSA and ICAq. Circular processes to treat by-products in ICAq include components like composting, vermicomposting, aerobic and anaerobic digestion, silage, and insect production. These processes can produce ICAq inputs such as seedling substrates, plant fertilizers, bioenergy, or feed ingredients. In addition, the plant component can supply therapeutic compounds. Further research on characterization of aquaponic components outputs and its quantifications, the impact of using circular inputs generated within the ICAq, and the technical feasibility and economic viability of circular processes in the context of SSA is needed. The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodoidea) causes direct feeding damage to crop plants and transmits pathogenic plant viruses, thereby threatening global food security. Although whitefly-infecting RNA viruses are known and proposed as biocontrol agents, no insect DNA virus has been found in any member of Aleyrodoidea. Using rolling circle amplification (RCA) of viral DNA from whiteflies collected from crop fields in Morocco, followed by Illumina sequencing of the RCA products, we found a novel insect single-stranded (ss) DNA parvovirus (family Parvoviridae) in addition to plant ssDNA geminiviruses transmitted by whiteflies. Based on its genome organization with inverted terminal repeats and evolutionarily conserved proteins mediating viral DNA replication (NS1/Rep) and encapsidation (VP), encoded on the forward and reverse strands, respectively, we named this virus Bemisia tabaci ambidensovirus (BtaDV) and classified it as a founding member of a new genus within the subfamily Densovirinae. This subfamily also contains three distinct genera of ambisense densoviruses of other hemipteran insects (Aphidoidea, Coccoidea, and Psylloidea). Furthermore, we provide evidence for the genetic variants of BtaDV circulating in whitefly populations and for its partial sequences integrated into the B. tabaci genome, with one integrant locus potentially expressing a fusion protein composed of viral Rep endonuclease and host DNA-binding domains. This suggests a long-term virus-host interaction and neofunctionalization of BtaDV-derived endogenous viral elements. Full article

The increasing demand for sustainable disease management in aquaculture has intensified interest in plant-based therapeutics. This study evaluated the formulation and efficacy of andrographolide-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (AND-NLCs) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) challenged with Streptococcus agalactiae ENC06. AND-NLCs were prepared by the phase-inversion technique and characterized by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and in vitro release profiling. Antibacterial activity was assessed by measuring inhibition zone diameters, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Growth performance, feed utilization, hepatosomatic index (HSI), and disease resistance were evaluated over a 60-day feeding trial. The AND-NLCs exhibited an optimal particle size (189.6 nm), high encapsulation efficiency (90.58%), sustained release, and structural stability. Compared to the free AND and control group, AND-NLC supplementation significantly improved growth, feed efficiency, HSI, and positive allometric growth. It also enhanced survival (73.3%) and relative percent survival (RPS = 65.6%) following S. agalactiae ENC06 infection. Antibacterial efficacy and physiological responses showed positive correlations with nanoparticle characteristics. These findings suggest that AND-NLCs enhance bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy, supporting their potential as a functional dietary additive to promote growth and improve disease resistance in tilapia aquaculture. Rosemary Extract Reduces Odor in Cats Through Nitrogen and Sulfur Metabolism by Gut Microbiota–Host Co-Modulation

Odors from pet cats can negatively affect the quality of life of cat owners. The diverse bioactive compounds in plant extracts make them a promising candidate for effective odor reduction. This study evaluated twelve plant extracts for deodorizing efficacy via in vitro fermentation tests. Rosemary extract and licorice extract exhibited better deodorizing effects, with fractions of rosemary extract below 100 Da demonstrating the most effective deodorizing performance. Based on these findings, subsequent feeding trials were conducted using rosemary extract and its fractions below 100 Da. In the feeding trial, adult British Shorthair cats were divided into three groups (Control Check, RE, and RE100) and housed in a controlled-environment respiration chamber for 30 days. Measurements included odor emissions, fecal and blood physicochemical parameters, immune parameters, microbiota composition based on 16S rRNA sequencing, and metabolome analysis. The results of the feeding trial indicated that rosemary extract significantly reduced ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions (46.84%, 41.64%), while fractions below 100 Da of rosemary extract achieved even greater reductions (55.62%, 53.87%). Rosemary extract regulated the intestinal microbial community, significantly increasing the relative abundance of the intestinal probiotic Bifidobacterium (p < 0.05) and reducing the population of sulfate-reducing bacteria (p < 0.05). It also significantly reduced urease and uricase activities (p < 0.05) to reduce ammonia production and inhibited the degradation of sulfur-containing proteins and sulfate reduction to reduce hydrogen sulfide emissions. Furthermore, rosemary extract significantly enhanced the immune function of British Shorthair cats (p < 0.05). This study suggests that rosemary extract, particularly its fractions below 100 Da, is a highly promising pet deodorizer. Full article

Establishing a sustainable production system requires a more efficient utilization of resources and the adoption of cleaner production methodologies. Specifically, industrial symbiosis promotes collaboration among interconnected industries by exchanging waste, byproducts, and utilities, thereby providing innovative ways to enhance the efficiency of production processes. However, the sustainability of agricultural products and agro-based industries is essential for human survival. This study proposed an integrated symbiotic production system that targets agro-based industries. The system includes seven plants: a sugar production plant, a corn-integrated industrial plant, an alcohol production plant, a feed production plant, a fertilizer plant, a bioethanol production plant, and a wastewater treatment plant. The study aimed to design a sustainable industrial system that shares byproducts, waste, and water reuse. Symbiotic relations between production plants are designed in a provided multi-objective optimization model that considers both the mitigation of CO2 emissions and the maximization of system profit. The multi-objective model with the epsilon-constraint method results in Pareto-efficient solutions that address the tradeoff between the objectives. This allows decision makers to select a suitable one among the solution set that prioritizes conflicting objectives. We developed ten scenarios to assess costs, revenue, profit, and CO2 emissions, offering significant insights into how model parameters affect managerial knowledge. This study also addresses environmental and economic concerns, thereby making the development of agro-based industries more sustainable. Full article

Design and Temperature Control of a Novel Aeroponic Plant Growth Chamber

It is projected that the world population will quadruple over the next century, and to meet future food demands, agricultural production will need to increase by 70%. Therefore, there has been a transition from traditional farming methods to autonomous modern agriculture. One such modern technique is aeroponic farming, in which plants are grown without soil under controlled and hygienic conditions. In aeroponic farming, plants are significantly less affected by climatic conditions, infectious diseases, and biotic and abiotic stresses, such as pest infestations. Additionally, this method can reduce water, nutrient, and pesticide usage by 98%, 60%, and 100%, respectively, while increasing the yield by 45–75% compared to traditional farming. In this study, a three-dimensional industrial design of an innovative aeroponic plant growth chamber was presented for use by individuals, researchers, and professional growers. The proposed chamber design is modular and open to further innovation. Unlike existing chambers, it includes load cells that enable real-time monitoring of the fresh weight of the plant. Furthermore, cameras were integrated into the chamber to track plant growth and changes over time and weight. Additionally, RGB power LEDs were placed on the inner ceiling of the chamber to provide an optimal lighting intensity and spectrum based on the cultivated plant species. A customizable chamber design was introduced, allowing users to determine the growing tray and nutrient nozzles according to the type and quantity of plants. Finally, system models were developed for temperature control of the chamber. Temperature control was implemented using a proportional-integral-derivative controller optimized with particle swarm optimization, radial movement optimization, differential evolution, and mayfly optimization algorithms for the gain parameters. The simulation results indicate that the temperatures of the growing and feeding chambers in the cabinet reached a steady state within 260 s, with an offset error of no more than 0.5 °C. This result demonstrates the accuracy of the derived model and the effectiveness of the optimized controllers. Full article

Feeding rats with a high-fat high-fructose (HFHF) diet is a reproducible experimental model of obesity/metabolic syndrome and the related MAFLD. Aronia melanocarpa, Rosa canina, and Alchemilla vulgaris are polyphenol-rich plants with proven health benefits. The aim of this study was to reveal the effects of four Aronia melanocarpa-based fruit juices (AMBFJs) in HFHF-fed rats. Methods: The AMBFJs were AM20 and AM60 (produced from aronia berries at 20 °C and 60 °C, respectively), AMRC (aronia juice with Rosa canina), and AMAV (aronia juice with Alchemilla vulgaris). Male Wistar rats were allocated to 6 groups. Except for the Control, the rest of the groups were fed an HFHF diet for 60 days. Throughout the experiment, each of the AMBFJs was administered to one HFHF-fed group. Results: HFHF-fed rats had an increased calorie intake on the background of increased liquid and decreased food consumption. At the end of the experiment, they had similar body weights, slightly increased fat indices, increased levels of blood lipids and liver enzymes, as well as typical histopathological changes in liver and adipose tissue. AMBFJs-treated animals showed improvement in most of these parameters, especially in triglyceride levels, liver enzymes, and the histopathological changes in the liver and fat. AMAV, the juice with the highest polyphenolic content, had the highest effect on adiposity. Conclusion: In HFHF-fed rats, AMBFJs exerted beneficial effects on MAFLD probably due to their polyphenolic ingredients. Full article

The shift toward plant-based feeds in aquaculture necessitates a search for probiotics to improve the digestibility of such feeds and fish growth. This study characterizes four Bacillus strains for their probiotic potential in carp (Cyprinus carpio). Strains isolated from river sediments underwent in vitro screening for proteolytic/amylolytic activity, antibiotic sensitivity, and biofilm formation. Whole-genome sequencing was performed and functional annotation identified probiotic-related genes. All strains were identified as Bacillus velezensis and harbored genes providing thermal, osmotic, and oxidative stress resistance, alongside enzymes and bioactive metabolite synthesis pathways. Two non-antagonistic strain pairs were solid-phase cultivated on soybeans and incorporated into carp feed (0.1% w/w) for a 76-day trial, and growth metrics and gene expression were analyzed in juvenile fish. Group 1 (strains MT14 + MT42) exhibited a 40.75% higher biomass increase than the control group while Group 2 (strains MT141 + MT142) exhibited a 56.62% higher biomass growth. No significant gene expression changes occurred in juveniles, though MT141 + MT142 transiently modulated fry expression profiles. Therefore, these Bacillus velezensis strains synergistically enhance growth in carp that are fed plant-rich diets, highlighting their viability as aquaculture probiotics. Full article

The world’s energy demand increases daily, fostering the search for renewable fuels to reconcile production needs with environmental sustainability. To prevent the severe atmospheric impact of fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is both essential and urgent, reinforcing the necessity of developing and adopting renewable fuel alternatives. Therefore, this work aimed to produce bio-oil through sugarcane bagasse fast pyrolysis. The methodology is based on fast pyrolysis operation in a fluidized bed reactor (pilot plant) as a thermochemical method for bio-oil production. This research required the conditioning of the raw material for system feeding, along with optimizing key variables, operating temperature, airflow, and sugarcane bagasse feed rate, to achieve improved yields compared to previous studies conducted in this pilot plant. The sugarcane bagasse was conditioned through drying and milling, followed by characterization using various analytical methods, including calorific value, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), particle size analysis by laser diffraction (Mastersizer—MS), and ultimate analysis (determining carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen by difference). The bio-oil produced showed promising yield results, with a maximum estimated value of 61.64%. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis confirmed the presence of aromatic compounds, as well as ester, ether, carboxylic acid, ketone, and alcohol functional groups. Full article

This review examines sustainable cascading biorefinery strategies for the green alga Ulva, which is globally prevalent in eutrophic marine waters and often forms extensive “green tides.” These blooms cause substantial environmental and economic damage to coastal communities. The primary target products within an Ulva biorefinery typically encompass salts, lipids, proteins, cellulose, and ulvan. Each of these components possesses unique properties and diverse applications, contributing to the economic robustness of the biorefinery. Salts can be repurposed for agricultural or even human consumption. Lipids offer high-value applications in nutraceuticals and animal feed. Proteins present significant potential as plant-based nutritional supplements. Cellulose can be transformed into various advanced materials. Finally, ulvan, a polyanionic oligosaccharide unique to Ulva, holds promise due to its distinct properties, particularly in the biomedical field. Furthermore, state-of-the-art chemical modifications of ulvan are presented with the aim of tailoring its properties and broadening its potential applications. Future research should prioritize optimizing these integrated extraction and fractionation processes. Furthermore, a multi-product biorefining approach, integrated with robust Life Cycle Assessment studies, is vital for transforming this environmental challenge into a significant opportunity for sustainable resource valorization and economic growth. Evaluation of Blast Resistance in Zinc-Biofortified Rice

Rice is a staple food for over half of the world’s population, and it is grown in over 100 countries. Rice blast disease can cause 10% to 30% crop loss, enough to feed 60 million people. Breeding for resistance can help farmers avoid costly fungicides. This study assessed the relationship between rice blast disease and zinc or anthocyanin content in biofortified rice. Susceptibility to foliar and panicle blast was assessed in a rice panel which differed on grain zinc content and pigmentation. A rice panel (n = 23) was challenged with inoculum of two isolates of Magnaporthe oryzae in a screenhouse-based assay. The zinc content with foliar blast severity was analyzed in the leaves and grain of a subset of non-inoculated rice plants. The effect of foliar zinc supplementation on seedlings was assessed by varying levels of zinc fertilizer solution on four blast susceptible cultivars at 14 days after planting (DAP), followed by inoculation with the blast pathogen at 21 DAP. Foliar blast severity was scored on a 0–9 scale at 7 days after inoculation. The rice panel was scored for anthocyanin content, and the data were correlated with foliar blast severity. The panel was grown in the field, and panicle blast, grain yield and yield-related agronomic traits were measured. Significant differences were observed in foliar blast severity among the rice genotypes, with IRBLK-KA and IR96248-16-2-3-3-B having mean scores greater than 4, as well as BASMATI 370 (a popular aromatic variety), while the rest of the genotypes were resistant. Supplementation with foliar zinc led to a significant decrease in susceptibility. A positive correlation was observed between foliar and panicle blast. The Zn in the leaves was negatively correlated with foliar blast severity, and had a marginally positive correlation with panicle blast. There was no relationship between foliar blast severity and anthocyanin content. Grain yield had a negative correlation with panicle blast, but no correlation was observed between Zn in the grain and grain yield. This study shows that Zn biofortification in the grain may not enhance resistance to foliar and panicle blast. Furthermore, the zinc-biofortified genotypes were not agronomically superior to the contemporary rice varieties. There is a need to apply genomic selection to combine promising alleles into adapted rice genetic backgrounds. Full article
