Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) cultivation generates a substantial number of byproducts, particularly nutshells, which are often discarded despite being rich in bioactive and structural compounds. These agro-industrial residues, comprising nearly 50% of the total nut mass, contain high levels of phenolics, flavonoids, dietary fiber, and lignocellulosic matter, making them suitable for circular economy applications. This review critically evaluates the potential of pecan shell waste for value-added applications in environmental remediation, food and pharmaceutical formulations, and green materials production. It explores innovative green extraction techniques, such as ultrasound-assisted, microwave-assisted, and subcritical water extraction, to recover valuable compounds like ellagic acid and tannins with high efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Moreover, the review highlights the conversion of pecan shells into activated carbon for wastewater treatment and soil remediation. Pecan byproducts have been used as sustainable feedstocks for catalyst support, contributing to energy conversion and biomass catalysis. The bioactive compounds also offer therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects, supporting their inclusion in nutraceutical and cosmetic applications. Through a comprehensive synthesis of recent studies, this work highlights the role of pecan shell valorization in reducing waste, improving public health, and increasing economic resilience within agro-industrial systems. By aligning with sustainable development and circular economies, the utilization of pecan byproducts provides a low-cost, eco-innovative pathway to mitigate environmental pollution and promote sustainable development. Enzymatic browning (EB) is a physiological alteration that compromises the sensory and commercial quality of tree nuts, significantly reducing their market value and functional compound content. Due to its complexity and economic impact, this review compiles updated information on mechanisms and factors driving EB in tree nut species, as well as strategies for its prevention. The EB in tree nuts results from the oxidation of phenolic compounds (PCs) to brown pigments. This process is driven by enzymatic activity such as polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), and phenylalanine ammonium lyase (PAL) and strongly enhanced by cellular stress and associated regulation of gene expression. The EB has been documented in several tree nut species, including almonds, betel nuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pistachios, and walnuts. This alteration developed both pre-harvest and post-harvest and was influenced by agronomic factors (such as cultivar, nutritional status, climatic conditions, and altitude) and handling (including shelling, storage, and processing). Mitigation strategies include the use of synthetic inhibitors, physical treatments, and the use of plant extracts rich in natural antioxidants, the latter perceived as more sustainable and safer alternatives. Contaminated seeds pose a major risk in hydroponic systems, as a single contaminated seed can compromise the entire setup. Effective decontamination strategies are essential to control seed-borne pathogens. Pecan shells, a byproduct comprising nearly 50% of the nut’s weight, have demonstrated antimicrobial properties against key pathogens. This study evaluated pecan shell extract (PSE) as a treatment to inactivate Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Pseudomonas spp. on lettuce seeds and its effect on germination. Lettuce seeds were inoculated with L. monocytogenes strains (101 M, V7, LCDC, and Scott A) and treated with PSE (1:10 w/v) either by coating in sodium alginate or priming for 6 h (4 °C or room temperature). Hydropriming was used as a control. Additional trials with E. coli and Pseudomonas spp. tested PSE at 1:10, 1:20, and 1:30 w/v ratios. Priming at refrigeration significantly reduced Listeria levels. E. coli priming treatments showed significant reductions at 1:20 and 1:30 w/v. For Pseudomonas, priming at 1:20 showed the highest reduction. PSE priming also enhanced germination (88.3%), outperforming other treatments. These findings suggest PSE is a sustainable and effective seed treatment to reduce microbial contamination and enhance seed germination in hydroponic systems. Full article

Postharvest fungal infections, particularly by Botrytis cinerea, can cause up to 50% losses in fruits and vegetables, and the overuse of synthetic fungicides has led to resistant pathogen strains. We hypothesized that hexane (Hex) and methanolic (MeOH) extracts from peanut (P) and pecan nut (PN) shells possess antifungal properties effective against B. cinerea in strawberries. To test this, we conducted both in vitro and ex vivo assays using strawberries inoculated with B. cinerea, comparing two controls (T0: water; T1: commercial synthetic fungicide) with four treatments—Hex-P, MeOH-P, Hex-PN, and MeOH-PN—at 1000 and 2000 ppm (in vitro) and 4000 ppm (ex vivo). Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AA) were also measured. MeOH-P and Hex-PN extracts at 2000 ppm significantly inhibited fungal mycelial growth in vitro. In ex vivo assays, MeOH-P reduced both disease incidence and severity comparably to the synthetic fungicide. MeOH-PN exhibited the highest TPC and AA. These findings support the potential use of MeOH-P extract as a natural alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling B. cinerea in strawberries during postharvest storage. Full article

Xyloglucan endotransglucosylases/hydrolases (XTHs) are key enzymes involved in cell wall remodeling by modifying xyloglucan–cellulose networks, thereby influencing plant growth, development, and secondary cell wall formation. While the roles of XTHs have been extensively studied in primary and secondary growth, their functions in the formation and thickening of lignified nut shells remain largely unknown. Pecan (Carya illinoinensis), an economically important nut crop, develops a hard, lignified shell that protects the seed during fruit maturation. In this study, we performed a comprehensive genome-wide characterization of the XTH gene family in pecan and identified 38 XTH genes, which were categorized into four distinct phylogenetic groups. Structural analyses of the deduced proteins revealed conserved catalytic residues alongside divergent loop regions, suggesting functional diversification. Expression profiling across various tissues and among pecan cultivars with contrasting shell phenotypes indicated that specific XTH genes may play critical roles in shell structure formation. Moreover, gene regulatory networks in thin- and thick-shelled pecans provided new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying shell development and thickness regulation. These findings lay a foundation for future genetic improvement strategies targeting nut shell traits in woody perennials. Full article

During the industrial pecan shelling process, kernels are often damaged. To address this problem, a study is conducted to experimentally determine improved impactor geometries for end-to-end pecan cracking. Four impactors of varying internal angles (from 30° to 52.5°, in increments of 7.5°) are tested. After cracking, the pecans are passed through an image analysis software designed to detect and measure cracks in their shells. These measurements help classify each pecan into one of four categories: under crack, standard crack, ideal crack, or over crack. Cracked and ideally cracked pecans are preferred for their processability, so the impactor geometries are then evaluated based on their ability to maximize these crack types across the widest impact energy range. For the four impactors tested, the 30° impactor is found to more consistently produce preferred cracks in a larger energy range relative to the other impactors. Full article

The state of Sonora, Mexico, stands as one of the leading producers of pecan nuts in the country, which are commercialized without shells, leaving behind this unused residue. Additionally, this region has abundant solar resources, as shown by its high levels of direct normal irradiance (DNI). This study contributes to research efforts aimed at achieving a synergy between concentrated solar energy technology and biomass pyrolysis processes, with the idea of using the advantages of organic waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding the combustion of conventional pyrolysis through the concentration of solar thermal energy. The objective of this study is to pioneer a new experimental analysis methodology in research on solar pyrolysis reactors. The two main features of this new methodology are, firstly, the comparison of temperature profiles during the heating of inert and reactive materials and, secondly, the analysis of heating rates. This facilitated a better interpretation of the observed phenomenon. The methodology encompasses two different thermal experiments: (A) the pyrolysis of pecan shells and (B) the heating–cooling process of the biochar produced in experiment (A). Additionally, an experiment involving the heating of volcanic stone is presented, which reveals the temperature profiles of an inert material and serves as a comparative reference with experiment (B). In this experimental study, 50 g of pecan shells were subjected to pyrolysis within a cylindrical stainless-steel reactor with a volume of 156 cm3, heated by concentrated radiation from a solar simulator. Three different heat fluxes were applied (234, 482, and 725 W), resulting in maximum reaction temperatures of 382, 498, and 674 °C, respectively. Pyrolysis gas analyses (H2, CO, CO2, and CH4) and characterization of the obtained biochar were conducted. The analysis of heating rates, both for biochar heating and biomass pyrolysis, facilitated the identification, differentiation, and interpretation of processes such as moisture evaporation, tar production endpoint, cellulosic material pyrolysis, and lignin degradation. This analysis proved to be a valuable tool as it revealed heating and cooling patterns that were not previously identified. The potential implications of this tool would be associated with improvements in the design and operation protocols of solar reactors. Full article

The study of the recovery of bioactive compounds from natural resources and its implications in several areas is very significant for the scientific community. This work aimed to study Brazilian agroindustrial wastes’ antioxidant and antimicrobial activities using green extraction. Olive leaves, jaboticaba peel, araçá peel, and pecan nut shells were evaluated under four conditions: (1) convective-drying and aqueous extraction, (2) convective-drying and ethanolic extraction, (3) freeze-drying and aqueous extraction, and (4) freeze-drying and ethanolic extraction. The results demonstrated that all samples showed high antioxidant potential, and the highest antioxidant activity was obtained for the extract of pecan nut shell. As for the quantification of compounds by HPLC, the olive leaf presented the highest content of phenolic compounds in the extract, mainly oleuropein. Finally, the antimicrobial activity analysis revealed the extracts’ bactericidal potential against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The present study shows that green extraction can extract bioactive compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, highlighting the importance of choosing the drying method and solvent for future uses of these natural resources by the industry. Lignins are phenolic polymers endowed with potent antioxidant properties that are finding increasing applications in a variety of fields. Consequently, there is a growing need for easily available and sustainable sources, as well as for green extraction methodologies of these compounds. Herein, a ball milling/deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based treatment is reported as an efficient strategy for the recovery of antioxidant lignins from the shells of edible nuts, namely chestnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecan nuts, and pistachios. In particular, preliminarily ball-milled shells were treated with 1:2 mol/mol choline chloride:lactic acid at 120 °C for 24 h, and the extracted material was recovered in 19–27% w/w yields after precipitation by the addition of 0.01 M HCl. Extensive spectroscopic and chromatographic analysis allowed for confirmation that the main phenolic constituents present in the shell extracts were lignins, accompanied by small amounts (0.9% w/w) of ellagic acid, in the case of chestnut shells. The recovered samples exhibited very promising antioxidant properties, particularly in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay (EC50 values ranging from 0.03 to 0.19 mg/mL). These results open new perspectives for the valorization of nut shells as green sources of lignins for applications as antioxidants, e.g., in the biomedical, food, and/or cosmetic sector. Nowadays, the increase in bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics has become a real threat to the human health, forcing researchers to develop new strategies. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) may be a viable solution to this problem. The green synthesis of AgNPs is considered a green, ecological and low-priced process that provides small and biocompatible nanostructures with antimicrobial activity with a potential application in medicine. In this work, pecan nut shell extracts were analyzed in order to determine their viability for the production of AgNPs. These NPs were synthesized using an extract rich in bioactive molecules, varying the reaction time and silver nitrate (AgNO3) concentration. AgNPs production was confirmed by FT-IR, UV-Vis and EDX spectroscopy, while their morphology and size were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The antibacterial activity of AgNPs was evaluated by the agar diffusion method against Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus mirabilis. The results showed that it is possible to obtain nanoparticles from an extract rich in antioxidant molecules with a size between 39.9 and 98.3 nm with a semi-spherical morphology. In addition, it was shown that the reaction time and the concentration of the precursor influence the final nanoparticles size. Antimicrobial tests showed that there is greater antimicrobial inhibition against Gram-negative than Gram-positive microorganisms, obtaining inhibition zone from 0.67 to 5.67 mm. Full article

This study examined the chemical composition and antioxidant properties of the extracts obtained from two byproduct streams generated at a commercial pecan nut shelling operation. Byproduct stream F contained more pecan nut meat pieces and packing material than stream S, consisting of mainly hard outer shell pieces. Samples from Native variety nuts were processed using subcritical, sonication aided and microwave heating, using water as a solvent. Ferric reducing capacity (FRAP), Total Phenolic Content (TPC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ABTS [2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] assays were used to determine antioxidant properties of the extracts. The experimental results clearly demonstrated that the chemical composition of the industrial byproducts was significantly different from the hand-separated shells. All the water extracts exhibited significant DPPH, ABTS and FRAP activity. The highest antioxidant capacity was obtained with the extracts obtained via subcritical water at 80 °C. This is the first report published in the literature on the antioxidant properties of water extracts obtained from industrial byproducts from a pecan nut shelling operation processing Native variety. New data generated in this study expand our knowledge of the properties of industrial nut shelling industry byproducts and help to evaluate the potential use of the shell extracts as antioxidants in various applications. This paper presents the results of an evaluation of the impact of the amount of potassium hydroxide on the obtained porous structure of the activated carbons derived from the shells of pistachios, hazelnuts, and pecans by carbonization and subsequent chemical activation with potassium hydroxide by different adsorption methods: Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, Dubinin–Raduskevich, the new numerical clustering-based adsorption analysis, Quenched Solid Density Functional Theory, and 2D-Non-linear Density Functional Theory for Heterogeneous Surfaces, applied to nitrogen adsorption isotherms at −196 °C. Based on the conducted research, a significant potential for the production of activated carbons from waste materials, such as nut shells, has been demonstrated. All the activated carbons obtained in the present study at the activator/char mass ratio R = 4 exhibited the most developed porous structure, and thus very good adsorption properties. However, activated carbons obtained from pecan shells deserve special attention, as they were characterized by the most homogeneous surface among all the samples analyzed, i.e., by a very desirable feature in most adsorption processes. The paper demonstrates the necessity of using different methods to analyze the porous structure of activated carbons in order to obtain a complete picture of the studied texture. This is because only a full spectrum of information allows for correctly selecting the appropriate technology and conditions for the production of activated carbons dedicated to specific industrial applications. As shown in this work, relying only on the simplest methods of adsorption isotherm analysis can lead to erroneous conclusions due to lack of complete information on the analyzed porous structure. This work thus also explains how and why the usual characterizations of the porous structure of activated carbons derived from lignocellulosic biomass should not be taken at face value. Largely produced agri-food byproducts represent a sustainable and easily available source of phenolic compounds, such as lignins and tannins, endowed with potent antioxidant properties. We report herein the characterization of the antioxidant properties of nine plant-derived byproducts. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays indicated the superior activity of pomegranate peels and seeds, grape pomace and pecan nut shell. An increase in the antioxidant potency was observed for most of the waste materials following a hydrolytic treatment, with the exception of the condensed tannin-rich pecan nut shell and grape pomace. UV-Vis and HPLC investigation of the soluble fractions coupled with the results from IR analysis and chemical degradation approaches on the whole materials allowed to conclude that the improvement of the antioxidant properties was due not only to removal of non-active components (mainly carbohydrates), but also to structural modifications of the phenolic compounds. Parallel experiments run on natural and bioinspired model phenolic polymers suggested that these structural modifications positively impacted on the antioxidant properties of lignins and hydrolyzable tannins, whereas significant degradation of condensed tannin moieties occurred, likely responsible for the lowering of the reducing power observed for grape pomace and pecan nut shell. These results open new perspectives toward the exploitation and manipulation of agri-food byproducts for application as antioxidant additives in functional materials. Full article

The pecan (Carya illinoinensis) nut shell is an important byproduct of the food processing industry that has not been previously explored as an antioxidant compound. This work aims to study the effect of the extrusion temperature and screw speed on the moisture content, water and oil absorption index, water solubility index, color, phenolic compounds, condensed tannin compounds, and antioxidant activity of pecan nut shell extrudates. Extrusion variables were adjusted using a response surface methodology. Extrusion, performed at 70 °C and 150 rpm, almost doubled the concentration of polyphenols in the non-extruded shell and significantly increased radical scavenging activity. Compounds in extrudates, performed at 70 °C and 150 rpm, were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a diode-array detector (DAD) and identified by liquid chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-MSD-TOF). Extrusion significantly increased most phenolic acid compounds, including gallic acid, ellagic acid pentose, ellagic acid, dimethyl ellagic acid rhamnoside, and dimethyl ellagic acid. The soluble fiber in extrudates was more than three-fold higher than in the control. Therefore, extrusion at 70 °C and 150 rpm increased the concentration of phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, and total dietary and soluble fiber. Our findings support the notion that extruded pecan nut shell can be used in clean-label products and improve their nutraceutical value. Full article
